    Starting all over

Well I decided to have my band fixed because I got a little scared of having the sleeve! Now nearly 1mth on from getting my band fixed I can't achieve restriction! I'm so devastated and frustrated at the moment! Is it now time I head down this path or keep on keeping on the path I'm on! Lost!

    Starting all over

Well here we go again. Went to visit Dr W. today and we have decided on a course of action. My band is not working and clearly there is a leak, but its slow and we can't seem to find it. So on the 19th of July I will be having my band removed!!!!!! I have to wait 3-4 months and then I will be having the sleeve. My friend had a similar problem and was sleeved in March, she has already lost 20+ kilos. She is very excited for me, and has told me write of this year! I just feel the last 5 years have been for nothing. I just want to get back to the girl you see in the picture and that's not even the smallest I got to, but I was happy very happy. I just can't help but feel a little deflated, but I know I'm the right road back to me!

11 days post op - disappointed

Hi Jess from experience I was told to stay on fluids for 2-3 weeks which indeed was hard. I then rang my mother who is a clinical nurse and she advised me to have some thicker fluids like yogurt etc or solids softer solids (mashed veges) and chew chew chew. You will find yourself full with just a few spoon fulls ( Well I did) I confirmed this with my surgeon and he was ok with it as long as I wasn't going over board. I don't believe your in danger of hurting yourself or the band. Take the advice of the nurse and not the manger she isn't a nurse! Hope this helps Kym

    Back to the Beginning

Ok so here I am nearly 5 years on after have my lap band operation. The absolute best thing I ever did for myself and my health. I lost all my weight and stayed at a health 65-68kgs with 7mls in my band. Until October 29th 2012, I went to work like I usually do and started my day. I work as a special needs EA in a primary school setting. At around 930 I began to feel signs of tightness in my chest tingly sensation down my arm, found it hard to breath and a constant ringing in my ears.................. I was immediately transported to the local hospital where I spent 15 days with a diagnosis of Pericarditis (fluid around my heart). My band was emptied and that was the beginning of the demise of my band. For the first time in 4 years I was able to eat anything and everything what an amazing feeling! My dilemma now is that because I was taking steroids for 6 months I've put on about 20kgs! I'm feeling bewildered and like a failure again! Everyone says at least you've got your health! I realise this but it's so frustrating! I worked so hard and almost feel like I'm back to square one! I'm back on the shakes, soups etc and walking between 6-10km a day but no movement on the scales! My husband is so supportive and says he loves no matter what, I'm just miserable! Okay so I went to see my doctor and a leak has been confirmed:-( So off to have a Barium Swallow, to see where it's leaking! Well not sure if I had a barium swallow today because everything was injected through my port! I had 20mls put in and it was excruitiatingly painful! No leak was detected! So my doctor has put 8mls in and there is definitely restriction now but not has much I would like but I'm back to see in 10 days for another fill! So hopefully I'm back on track to losing those excess kilos I've accumulated! Wish me luck and fingers x it's all good from here on in! Well how wrong was I. Well here we go again. Went to visit Dr W. today and we have decided on a course of action. My band is not working and clearly there is a leak, but its slow and we can't seem to find it. Back to the Beginning

Ok well here goes........my surgery for port replacement went well on Tuesday16/7/13, it was under local so it was a little unnerving being wide awake whilst my stomach was being cut open. I didn't feel anything apart from a little pulling and squirting when the 5 leaks were identified. It was all completed in under 30 minutes and I was free to go. Within an hour the local had warn off and the pain was noticeable but bearable. By the time we arrived home around 730pm I was in complete agony which I expected but not this bad. I took some pain medication and put myself to bed. At 11pm I woke in excruitiating pain I took more pain meds and sat on the lounge trying to breath through the pain. By 2am I couldn't cope any longer I took myself to the hospital. The pain was radiating from the wound site up towards my heart and shoulder. The ED doctors performed an ECG (all was well with my heart) and various other tests. I was unable to keep anything down so I was given something for the nausea and was put on a drip with anti-inflammatory drugs and pain killers. By 630am the pain had severely subsided and I was released from ED. Fast forward until yesterday 18/7/13, I had been unable to keep anything down what's so ever since my surgery, my scales loved it but I was severely dehydrated. I then rang my surgeons rooms in Perth and told the secretary what was going on. She advised me to drive to Perth which was not possible for me yesterday so she then told me to present at ED. Again I presented at ED with paperwork from previous visit, I told them what was going on they rang my surgeon in Perth who told them there may be a little fluid in my band so to remove it. They tried several times to aspirate it with no luck so the ED doctor advised me there was nothing he could do and told me to drive to Perth, I was in such a distressed state by this stage and the ED doctor couldn't have cared less in fact has he turned to leave the room he laughed!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes I have reported him. I then went my local surgeons rooms who was not available but his secretary was so worried about my distressed and emotional state she called him who in then spoke to me and calmed me down and told me he would call his registra to come help me. His registra turned up within 20 mins and was able to aspirate 6.5mls from band which immediately relieved my symptoms. (Remember I had had no restriction in my band for months now. So to go from 0mls to 6.5mls was huge). So it brings me to today........its the first day I feel normal still some pain around incision site but I am 3kg down. Up and on from here. X
  16. well done you deserve it x

    Back to the Beginning

Ok here goes, went back to my original surgeon on Tuesday, and he found several leaks within minutes of me showing him my x-ray films. I don't need my band replaced just repaired. Its a quick and small operation that I can have under local anesetic. So next Tuesday I will drive to Perth and I should be all fixed by 2pm although I know I will be sore my recovery will be quick and I'm determined to get a amount of weight of before Christmas. Yay I am so relived and excited once again. Thanks everyone for your support and comments I really appreciate it x

    Back to the Beginning

Ok so I have been extremely depressed over the last 4/5 day I can barely look at my self, so I rang my original surgeon Dr Tony Kierath. (I know see Dr W because I relocated to Bunbury from Karratha and it was more convenient for me someone locally than travelling to Perth) I rang and left a message with his secretary and no quicker had I got off the phone to her given her a quick run down on what was happening Dr K rang me back. It was like talking to an old friend. I told him what had been going on since I became ill and what Dr W was now planning to do. Dr K now wants to see me in his office first thing Tuesday morning (without an apt) so we can discuss what has been happening! I told I was preparing to have the band removed and the sleeve put in its place. The info Dr K gave me was that he refuses to do the sleeve op as it is an old op with a new name and its easier for the doctors to perform. He commented on the fact there's no denying the sleeve has great results but there is no real long term data stating the sleeve is a long term fix where the band has. So now I'm in a bloody hard place to go ahead with sleeve or replace band. I'm worried about having my stomach cut out and worried that you can re stretch the stomach. Dr K thinks I may just need my band replaced. At least I know what to expect with the band and know that it has worked for me in the past! What are your thoughts ladies and thanks for your support it means the world. x What to do to do????
  21. Dolores, I'm in the process of my band being removed on the 19/7 and then being sleeved in October! Any advice?

    Sleeve Questions ?

I am in your shoes right now! I lost a total of 35kg whilst having the band and I sat very happily at 65-68kg. Due to reason we are unsure about my band has stopped working (leak obviously but we can't find it) on the 19th of July I am having my band removed. By the looks of it you've only had to wait around 7weeks to get your sleeve done. Hopefully I can get my sleeve done in a similar time frame. Good luck
