2016 will have a lot to live up too! Last year was London, Paris, Amsterdam and Bali... Ambassador for Diabetes WA, HBF Run for a Reason and the reversal of my Type 2 Diabetes. I didn't get to complete my Barista course but it's on this years To Do List! Fitness is going to be a bigger focus this year for me and a strong return to natural eating. The vegie garden is nearly ready for planting, weather is cooling down and 2016 is well on it's way. ღ AB

About Me

I've struggled with weight since I was in Kindy. I don't think I ever remember being "normal" weight, but at 6ft tall now, I've always stood out in the crowd. With a family history of Type 2 Diabetes, it was on the cards and it found me back in '07 along with Epilepsy out of nowhere.  3 years ago I quit a 40 cigarette a day habit and have worked towards a healthier lifestyle. This is my next challenge and I am excited...

My WLS Experience

02/04/14 148 kgs started on pre-op diet

13/04/14 139 kgs

16/04/14 Surgery Day. 10 ml band fitted - no fill.

06/05/14 GP Visit: Diabetes medication reduced. Cholesterol medication halved. HbA1c now 6.0

09/05/14 Dietitian First Follow-up: All good! Now on Solids

12/05/14 First Fill only 2 mls. My body rejected initial 4 mls. But due to a stitch torn from the muscle holding port in place, I had internal bleeding and 200 mls of blood was syringed out of a cavity near the port prior to my fill. Cause was over exertion with exercise. Bummed. Back on liquids now...and it starts all over again. Told no exercise for two weeks.

13/05/14 131 kg.

22/05/14 134 kg then down to 130 kg within 4 days: *sigh* who knows

26/05/14 Surgeon visit. 2 mls added. Total of 4 mls in band. Great progress and now back on full exercise.

18/06/14 Update: Been a slow few weeks despite exercise and following food guidelines. Exercise back up to approx. 2kms a day walking/light jog, 25 min bike and lifting hand weights 1kg each to tone. Occasionally hungry, sleeping better than ever (sleep apnea gone as is the snoring) and I feel pretty good. Weight: 126kg. Surgeon visit in 7 days.

25/06/14 Surgeon visit. 1 ml added. Total of 5 mls in band now. Happy with progress thus far. The pain I am experiencing on port side is due to my stomach "dragging" downwards from the weight loss and it is pulling the port etc down with it. Suggested a girdle/corset for support. Ordered more blood work to assess current levels of everything to determine lethargy, headaches, vitamin and mineral levels and possible reduction of current medications.

26/06/14 Nuclear Medicine Clinic visit for a V/Q scan where radioactive gas was inhaled, then injected into me and scans were performed to look for possible blood clots or any abnormal blood flow. Fortunately I am clear.

27/06/14 Current weight 123 kg

04/07/14 Went to see Bariatric Physician after a phone consult day prior and had 0.5ml removed. Eating and drinking was uncomfortable after a mouthful or two. Felt better immediately. Some bloods back, iron deficient again and I have to up my fish intake (yuck) and add some avocados and almonds to the mix. Weight 122 kg.

21/07/14 Saw Surgeon today! Scales sitting at 122 kg again and he was very happy (wtf!). We put in 0.3ml, total now of 4.8ml. My concern of pain in port area was dismissed as a sensitivity to the injections at the site area. Saw GP today too and she is very happy with progress. Referred to Haematologist for Iron Infusion. More bloods taken for other tests.

03/08/14 120 kg. Two weeks of Boxing twice a week now and loving it and walking more and more, meals are also smaller but the weight isn't dropping like it was....Hmmmm.

12/08/14 120 kg. 0.25ml added to band. Weight fluctuating but Surgeon happy with progress overall. Saw Dietitian too and she made a few adjustments to intake but overall doing well.

15/08/14 118 kg. Today marks a weight loss of 30 kgs. Yay me!

08/09/14 117 kg. Iron Infusion happening on Friday, so had more blood drawn today. Feeling pretty good, just a bit more tired than normal.

12/09/14  Iron Infusion went well, no side effects. A little tired, but that is how most people feel apparently, but I can happily accept that!

22/09/14 Surgeon removed 0.5ml for my holiday. Happy with my weight loss. 3.5kg lost since last visit, and all blood work getting better every test.

04/11/14 115kg - Feeling great. NZ trip fabulous. Next week bloods due and CDN appt organised. Dr D end of the month for a fill.

27/11/14 116kg Saw Dr D and was given the all clear to have 0.5ml put back in. Referred to have ultrasound to investigate the "stitch" feeling. Also saw Dietitian, need to record Protein intake and aim for 80g a day.

28/11/14 CDM Nurse today, HbA1C 6.0 and stabilized. Cholesterol 3.5 :) yay. GP happy with my progress. Shot my Goal Weight to hell since last Diabetic Review!

08/12/14 116kg Saw Dr D, had 0.5ml taken out. Had 3-4 days of barely being able to eat or drink. Then by the Sunday, I could barely swallow my own saliva. Needle bent whilst inserted into port to remove fluid.

19/12/14 Fasting ultrasound done. Can not get results until Dr D returns in the new year. Sonographer couldn't see anything requiring urgent medical care. Port area still painful.

23/12/14 Saw my GP. U/Sound results show Hepatosplenomegaly and Steatosis. Pain still persistent but not as strong. Surgeon returns 5th Jan 2015, will see him to discuss results further. Just taking it easy until then and watching exercise and limiting food intake.

31/12/2014 The last day of what has been a life changing year. Let's see what 2015 has on offer x

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

22/01/2015 117kg Surgeon visit today! Scan results from u/s all okay. Fill of 0.25ml and plan another in 8 weeks. Revised goal to 85kg now. Fills to be small and steady.

04/02/15 Due to continual low blood pressure readings, dizziness and just feeling blah, blood tests done today (one month early). GP advised to increase water to 2-2.25lt a day, more carbs and more salt.

09/02/15 Blood results in and all good! HbA1c even low enough to drop diabetic medication down to one tablet only, twice a day (Metformin) and only 500mg. Yay finally. B/P now also back to normal. Weight 116kg still.

23/03/15 Surgeon visit today. Very happy with recent blood work. Cholesterol normal. Glucose Tolerance normal....I'm normal! 0.25ml fill. Total 5ml in band. No leaking confirmed. Discussed tummy tuck at approx 90kgs as my tummy is now just skin (cool!). Me to stick to smaller portions and regular exercise (as normal). Going back in June 2015.

13/04/15 GP visit. All diabetic medication is now gone! Hell yeah!

16/04/15 One Year Bandiversary today. Current weight 112kg. What a year. Photo shoot last week for upcoming article in The West Australian newspaper Mind and Body lift-out, Diabetes WA Ambassador 2015, articles in the eBlast and Diabetes Matters magazine and Facebook. I love the new me.

30/04/15 Saw Dietitian today. Apparently I am not getting in enough food and is concerned about possible muscle loss, nutrition intake and iron levels. Starting new eating plan for the next week, otherwise fluid to come out of band so more food can go in. Still 112kg but feeling good! Averaging 3km - 4km a day of walking. Time to start strength training now so looking into starting Pilates.

19/05/15 Was in The West Australian Mind & Body section. It talked about My Story and my prep for the Run for a Reason

24/05/15 HBF Run for a Reason completed! 4KM in 49mins :)

22/06/15 Took it easy for a week due to a concussion 2 weeks ago. Limited food intake and scales were friendly! 110kg

16/07/15 Blood results in. HbA1c 6.5 without medication! GP happy so I am continuing on no medication. Cholesterol also good at 4.9. Still need to watch good cholesterol as it is a bit too low. And Triglycerides 0.2 over recommendation. But I am pleased!

29/07/15 Surgeon removed 0.5ml in prep for my overseas vacation. He is pleased with blood test results and current weight. Pain in my port area I mentioned could be hernia related, ultrasound referral received and scheduled for end of August.

24/08/15 Had abdominal ultrasound. Revealed it is very close to skin surface due to weight loss and it is feeling everything.

19/10/15 GP took me off Cholesterol medication today yay. HbA1c 6.0

20/10/15 Weight going up and down. Currently 111kg. 2 overseas holidays in 7 weeks. Concussion received whilst in Bali, two trips to the ED when returned home. Diagnosed with Post Concussion Syndrome. Recovery has been slow. This is 2nd concussion in 4 months.

12/11/15 Saw Surgeon today and I weighed 115kg ouch. He was pleased that was all that had happened since July. Had a fill of 0.25ml, back on fluids for a few days. Returning next month for another 0.25ml as 5ml is my "happy place".

13/11/15 OPSM eye test done. No Retinopathy. I have a very slim borderline impairment but not requiring intervention at this time. Recommends I return in 1 year instead of 2 years.

14/11/15 113.5kg

16/11/15 Podiatrist check up. Feet and nails good. Full sensation both feet. Nails trimmed.

24/11/15 Tonic Clonic seizure 2130. Ambulance to SCGH

11/12/15 Remedial massage

No more fills done for 2015 as a result of seizure making band "tight". Good restriction at present. Weight gain post seizure nearly 7 kgs in 10 days. Reported to Surgeon. Reason unknown. This is my first seizure since acquiring my lap band.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

18/01/16 Neurologist appt. Medication adjusted. Neurologist termed this a "breakthrough seizure". Aiming to reduce stress and anxiety.

19/01/16 Dental check up! Teeth great considering what they have been through. One small cavity to repair. No damage from seizure in November.
