    Public or private?

After having lap band four years ago my surgeon has suggested that it would be better for me to have it removed and have a sleeve instead. I have other health issues, namely severe osteoarthritis impacting my spine and hips. I've already had one total hip replacement. In order to go from band to sleeve I need to get private health insurance and then wait 12 months. Just wondering what my chances are of going public. Would it be a longer wait? Is 12 months really the earliest I can get it done? Any help appreciated.

    August Sleeve Buddies ???

I seem to have a good day then a bad day. In my attempt to save money and get a cheap hotel I think I may have picked the worst one! Filthy. No light in one room and have killed 6 cockroaches so far! Still, it has a washer and dryer and a small kitchenette to heat my soups and make my shakes. I'm missing my kids terribly. Went shopping yesterday and walked around a fair bit but today I couldn't even muster the energy to leave the room! I see my surgeon tomorrow and then I'm home the next day thankfully. Yay!

    August Sleeve Buddies ???

Hi guys. Its been an on and off time. Some discomfort and the fact I have to remain close to the hospital for a week is making me homesick. Im getting a funny feeling that feels like my tummy rumbling from hunger but I know that can't be right! Probably gas or reflux or something else., Still very tired. I can't wait to go home Tuesday!

    4 days post op

That's great to hear! I'm due to get done Tuesday but am not allowed to return home until a week later (I live 5 hours away as well). So I will be staying in a hotel room until the following Monday when the surgeon clears me to return home.

If you have enough Super to cover it then you shouldn't have any problem. Just remember that withdrawing your super early counts as income so it might affect your tax at tax time or any centrelink payments you get.

    Surgery Tomorrow - Scared

Good luck. It's only human nature to second guess ourselves. We wonder if we really need to be so drastic. If it were so easy to lose the weight without surgery we would have done it by now. Make sure there is room in your bag to pack the clothing you are wearing to the hospital. Something warm to wear in hospital (a bed coat-does anyone even own one of those anymore?!?! Or a dressing gown. A pair of comfy slippers). Go you good thing! You've got this! Best of luck and let us know how you are doing (when you can).
  10. It's an odd thing isn't it? If we could tolerate a diet of weight loss shakes we would t be seeking weight loss surgery in the first place. Still, think of all that goodness it's doing in preparing you for surgery. Shrinking your liver. Making you surgery ready for your next chapter as a sleeved person. Good luck.

Denzel just remember that withdrawing super counts as income so if you receive any Centrelink payments then they will be affected by it, reducing your payments.

Band is gone!!!!! I can't say that I miss it! I can eat salad and meat and bread and fruit with the skin on! It's amazing! Now I wait for phi to kick in for my sleeve surgery but until then I am loving eating healthier foods and no reflux!

Surgeons in Perth that will allow payment via superannuation?

Professor Jeff Hamdorf at Western Surgical Health does surgery with no PHI and super withdrawal I think

    Lapband Removal

Go to your GP and explain the problems you are having and reasons for wanting it removed and they will send a referral to a surgeon at the public hospital for removal. Not sure what the wait list would be but the more urgent the need to have it removed the quicker it will be taken out.

    Public or private?

GP appointment today. He has written up a referral for a surgeon to remove the band, public. I have sent off my paperwork for private health. I am guessing my band could be out in the next month or so. Exciting! Im just hoping I don't gain too much weight between now and 12 months time when my phi kicks in to get sleeve done!

    Public or private?

Pneumonia last year. Ever since have had trouble with my voice. Like I'm losing my voice. Every single day! For months! 7 months! Anyway...... ear nose and throat specialist today took a look down my throat with a long camera and said my throat was very red and he suspected silent reflux. As soon as he said it I knew that it was from my band. I don't know why I never put two and two together sooner! I am making an appointment with my gp to get a referral to the public specialist to see about removing the band. Then I'll take out private health and wait the 12 months for sleeve and pray I don't gain too much weight in the meantime!

    Getting sleeve in 4 weeks

I saw my doctor today and had 0.3ml removed from my band. It's just been too difficult. Hardly anything would go down unless it was lollies or biscuits or chips. They slide down easily! I am now looking at getting private health insurance so I can get the band removed and get a sleeve. The only drama is the 12 month wait on private health. The wait will kill me!

    band to sleeve public question

I've kept my band secret as well, and it can be very difficult explaining why you don't eat bread, pasta, meat etc especially if your band is tight. My husband wants me to "just get a fill" which sounds easy enough, but the nightmare of constantly bringing up food is horrid. Also, living so far away from Perth and not having your regular surgeon come to your area often means you are always looking out for another doctor that can do fills and adjustments. I have found one in Albany, but even he doesn't like lap banding likening it to restricting caloric intake by wiring the jaw shut!

    band to sleeve public question

I'm in the same boat. I lost a lot, and when I got sick of the constriction I went and had a full ml removed so that I could feel that I was eating "normally"- salads, fruit with the skin on etc, but clearly I began to overindulge and eat way too much. A big no no for my family this year was ordering a massive hamper from Chrisco. It was mostly junk and I found myself snacking on high calorie garbage and lots of it. With a reduced determination to exercise I have now stacked on 14 kilos!!!! Enough is enough, I too need to take drastic measures to correct where I have gone wrong
