  1. i had a bit of a google search and a search on here and can't seem to find any answers, so hoping someone may have been in a similar position or can shed some light for me. i will state firstly I am seeing my surgeon on Wednesday May 3rd, but curiosity is getting the better of me, and maybe a little worry. So i was originally banded back in 2012. Lost a fair amount of weight and maintained it till i got pregnant in 2014 I had my daughter but put a fair whack of weight back on. We later found my band had moved up at some point, caused a bunch of scar tissue and so was removed as was an outer layer of stomach, to help make way for me converting to a sleeve later. i waited 9 months to give my stomach a really good chance to heal before getting the sleeve. During the surgery apparently my stomach bled a bit along the staple lines so the surgeon did a bit more hand sewing. Have ended up with horrid reflux now and max dose of nexium for the most part keeps it at bay. The problem i am now having is constant regurgitation. I was sleeved in September 2016 and till now have lost 46kg. Speaking with my surgeon he is worried i may actually be slowly starving my body. I have trouble keeping water down at times, and i vomit multiple times a day. Sometimes it is right after a mouthful of food, other times 15 or 20 minutes later. i chew really well, and ever blended soups can come back up. My surgeon was thinking it may be a problem higher up in my stomach and said it it was so we should be able to fix it with minimal effort and shouldn't affect my weight loss. He ordered a barium swallow with solids which i had done this wednesday 26th May. The radiologist when doing it(and he does them often as it was at the preferred hospital as they know what to look for) said, "oh that's interesting". i then asked him what was so interesting. He said he needed to look into it further, but my reflux was coming right from the bottom of my stomach(he also said my esophageal sphincter isn't loose). He also said that at the bottom of the stomach mine seems to be in a curved and somewhat partly looped kind of position. This bottom part being like this is really worrying me. I don't know at this stage if i will need more surgery, can it actually be fixed etc. And i know my surgeon can tell me more about it, but i am so worried about it now. i guess maybe I'm just looking for some reassurance and to see if anyone has any info. i am the smallest i can ever remember being, smaller than i got with the band and I don't want it to stop as I want to lose another 15 or 20kg if possible. i also dont want to lose what stomach I have left and then need TPN to live on. I can't even get two mouthfuls of food in most of the time. Sorry for the long winded bit. But I figure if anyone can understand how I feel etc it would be people on here. Ness
  2. I have 10 * 200 ml Resource Protein drinks which are great for healing during the liquid phase as they are nutritionally sound. The are suitable for post band or sleeve, but not bypass as I have discovered due to dumping. I live in Point Cook 3030 if you want to collect? Details are also in the general forum. Rgds Sara

    Post op/ about me

Hi all I am a relatively new to having my band but know a fair bit about it with members of my family having the same or similar ops. I have joined banding together as a form of support for myself and so I can help to support others. I would never change my decision to have my band and am so so grateful that I had the opportunity to have my op. I have had my third fill yesterday and now have 7ml in my band (I don't know how much it holds in total)
  4. Hi all, I'm a very new bandit (banded on Wednesday), and I'm trying to be careful with my fluid post op diet and not overdo it :-) Since I pretty much used to eat until I felt full (or over full!), I'm not sure what I should be looking for when it comes just to being "satisfied" instead. Does your body give you any cues when it's happy and had enough? What is your 'soft stop' cue? Cheers all :-)

11 days post op - disappointed

Had a few disappointments this week, which have really taken the shine off having the band. First up i had my 1st pre-op appointment on tuesday. The actual appointment when really well, my nurse was great and really supportive and said i was doing fantastically. It was one week post-op and she said that if i was feeling hungry on the fluids and was ok with starting pureed i could go ahead. We discussed what i should and shouldn't be having and i left on such a high knowing that i had recovered very well and that i was progressing better than expected. It went down hill from there. On my way home i stopped off at the shops and bought avocado, dip and some light cruskits (i figured chewing them well with dip they would break down fine). I thought i might like to try some fish as well, so i called up the clinic to see whether that would be ok. The nurse wasn't there, but the practice manager was, and when i told her my query she immediately shot me down, saying i should be still on fluids and definitely not even thinking about anything more solid for another week. When i told her how hungry i was and how i was having quite alot of fluids, she suggested i have an extra optifast and that should fill me up. When i said that i wasn't having any optifast at all - i was following the advice in the book they recommended which had a bunch of pureed soups in the liquid phase and my multivitamins - she was very agitated with me and told me i should follow the dieticians advice to avoid damaging my band. I was unsure whose advice to take and she said she would call the surgeon and tell me what he said. By this time i was home with what i had bought and thought i would try it anyway. I had two cruskits with avocado and lemon, chewed very well and paused between each bite (that slow eating app is great!) Not a problem. No pain, no discomfort and i felt pleasantly full but not stuffed. Then the manager rang back and said that the surgeon confirmed what she had told me, and i was to go back on fluids for another week. At this point i was pretty upset. I had been on such a high before, was obviously capable of eating mushy food, but now i had lost my confidence in anything the nurse had told me, and felt like i had been a failure because i might have damaged my band. I came on here and everyone has differing stories, one surgeons team says 1 week liquid, 1 week pureed then solids, but mine says two weeks of each. Plus i re-read my dieticians notes about the fluid diet and i discovered that what he constituted as pureed was alot of what i had been drinking in the liquid phase - drinking yogurt, very runny soups ect. Despite the fact that i was using a book my surgeons office had told me to get! So by midday thursday i was a mess. I felt like i had done everything wrong and i might have "broken" my band and stuffed everything! So i wrote my dietician a long email explaining what had happened and asking his advice - and he hasn't gotten back to me. Not only that but my last email to him, which was almost a week ago now, he still hasn't replied to either. All up i'm feeling really let down by my team, upset because i feel like i should have gone with someone else, and angry because what i was so excited about, is now making me anxious and worried everyday. To top it all off this afternoon a was looking at one of my laparoscopy scars, which are healing nicely, and found that one of them has a stitch poking out - the one right under my bra strap. I was told i didn't have any stitches at all, so WTF is it doing there? And its not a dissolvable stitch because 11 days out with everything else healed over, it should have been gone by now. I'm not very impressed with the whole experience thus far, dealing with my team after the surgery. My first appointment with the surgeon is in two weeks, but i think ill be getting on the phone monday and making an appointment sooner. Hopefully i can sit down with him and discuss these issues, and he can sort things out for me. Im 7.5 kgs down, so at least thats still going well. For now i'm having avocado and thin soups, and i've put a bandaid over my stitch to stop it rubbing on my bra. Fingers crossed things get better from now on. Will let you know how it goes, Jess

    5 days post-op

Well! Today i am 5 days post-op. So far i've lost 6.5kgs in total. I had my surgery tuesday afternoon with Dr Ian Michell and his team at Essendon Private. The hospital was lovely, my night nurse was absolutely fantastic, and i left wednesday afternoon with no complications. I haven't really had any issues so far. I'm eating soup recipes from the Knife, Fork, Band book which are great, really satisfying for savory and meaty flavours without being disgusting. Pain wise, i haven't really had much of an issue. I had my tonsils out at the beginning of the year and that was much worse than the pain levels i've had with the band. They gave me anti-inflams and endone when i left the hosp, but i haven't needed the endone, and ive just been taking panadol as my team suggested. The worst pain i've been in was due to gas or overeating. Its taken a while to learn that at this point, even tea counts as a meal, so you cant have a tea ontop of soup!!! Showering, driving, sitting are all fine, the only thing that im still not ok with is sleeping on my side (which is unfortunate as im a side sleeper!) and this is ok if i prop myself up with pillows and such now. Well thats it for now, ill update again when i get back to work next week! Any questions please let me know. - Jess

    Post Op Clinic

I went to my post op clinic appointment today and with the exception of still not being allowed to go to the gym for another 3 1/2 weeks (that'll make it 6 weeks post op), I'm so damn happy ! The surgeon said I'm doing really well and told me my weight loss is really good. (7.1kg in the 2 1/2 weeks since surgery), and best of all, that if I don't feel like eating that I don't have to. My dietician had given me a daily meal plan which I thought I had to stick to and I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the food I had to eat but as it turns out, if I only want to eat once a day, that's fine. She asked if I'd felt any hunger and I told her no, not since about 3 days into Optifast and she said I need to eat only when I get hungry ... and if that was only once a day then so be it. Apparently I need to get to the stage where I DO get hungry and begin being able to eat more and more and not feel satisfied or full so that they know I need a fill. She also said they gave me a small band. I asked her if my surgeon just gave everyone a small band and she said no, they gave me a small band because there was very little fat around my stomach ! She also said my liver was lovely. I assume this means that all my internal organs have very little fat around them now and therefore my inside bits are getting healthier already. I have to go back in 5 weeks and if I need a fill they'll give me one then. I swear, I feel like a deadset rock star today !

    Painkillers?

Hi guys So i'm 2 days post op. Everything went ok and relatively pain free. However, I woke up with the worst pain this morning at 4am. Had some aspro clear and went back to bed. My pain seems to be worse today. Did anyone else have this problem? What meds have you taken? I've just been having the Endone and Aspro Clear and doesn't seem to be doing a lot. Also, is anyone else more comfortable sitting upright than laying down? I find it a little strange that my stomach feels better when I sit upright..but wonder if it's the best thing I should be doing for my body and if it's getting enough rest. Another thing I can't work out is if i'm just bloated from the gas, or bloated because i've had enough liquid! So hard to tell!! Cheers Carla

    My Bum Hurts

I saw my GP today because I went a bit backwards with pain and had to get my wounds re-dressed after getting them wet in the shower. It turns out I've been a little ambitious with my expectations of getting back to normal post op. (I'm on day 6). I was trying to negotiate being allowed to drive again and then my friend who came to the appointment with me said, "She drives a manual," to which my doctor replied, "No driving for another week." A week ?!?! So I asked her if I could get on a bus to go to the shops and she said a big fat, "No !" I've been ordered to rest for another whole week and I'm bored out of my skull. They're trying to kill me ... lol. I've been cross stitching but because of the endone I'm making a lot of mistakes and so half of what I do I need to unpick and redo. I think it might be time to get back into The Sims 3 tomorrow. I can lose entire days playing that game. Oh ... and my bum really does hurt ... from sitting on it so bloody much this week ! I'm not good at resting.

    First day back at work

Not very good at updating this regularly though not much has changed except weight loss. Down 4.4kg so am happy with that! Food wise, still on liquids and taking it easy. Breakfast is a Yakult and De-Gas at 5am, then an Up n Go around 8:30 which took me 1.5hrs to get most of the way through and gave up on the last few mouthfuls as it was warm. Slowly learning to let go of the "can't waste food!" nagging voice in my head. I know the world won't end if I don't finish something, but pre-op I couldn't bear to waste anything. Lunch was a cup-a-soup, again took a good hour to drink most but gave up as it went cold. Yoplait Forme when I got home around 4:30, then a few spoonfuls of a Kate Morgan creme about 6:30 and a lot of water in between! Forgot to take De-Gas to work, was quite uncomfortable most of the day and paranoid I would accidentally burp while on a phone call. Not good! Got home and put a sheet in my bag straight away. Feeling like I should be doing some exercise, though still quite tender in the port site. Might be a good time to use the treadmill at work and start slow. Looking forward to soft foods next week!
  11. Hi fabulous new friends, As the topic says... "How long did you feel sick/unwell for?" It's been nearly a week since banding and not only do I have horrible heartburn, I generally feel unwell in my gut. I'm not managing to get much liquids down <500ml and the only thing my body will actually take is a small serve of leek and potato soup. Water,tea/coffee, cordial, juice is all a struggle, while nutritionally while I've tried milk based drinks (up&go) and drinking yoghurt, custard - they all make me feel horrible and I can't finish them. I've got a GP appointment this morning, and am planning to ring the hospital too. Now that its Monday, I'll get to actually talk to someone. I never had the post op X-ray. Did you?

    MUSHIES!!!

Hello! I'm sitting on 96kg 2 week after surgery. I was 100.7kg on surgery day so I have lost 4.5kg in the last 2 weeks on my liquid phase. I'm a little bit nervous about starting mushies as I know my weight loss with stall for a while, so I might start my walking tomorrow (didnt make it yesterday or today). Hopefully that will keep things moving a bit. Trouble is it's been so HOT the last week or so and I hate being outside in the sun, I burn so easily. I'm going to have to get up super early and go whilst it'll still a bit cool. For my first mushy meal i took the stick blender to some left over Spag Bol, and it is HEAVENLY! I have been waiting for this for 4 weeks! haha. I remembered to have a drink before hand, and I am eating out of a toddler bowl, with a teaspoon and putting it down between (small) mouthfuls. I measured out just over half a cup which I have a feeling will be more than plenty as I am filling up quickly with each spoonful. Tonight as my hubby is coming home I'm making pan-fried fish, with soft pumpkin and cauliflower/broccoli cheese. All soft enough for me to eat as well
  13. 12 days post op Highest Weight: 108kg Current Weight: 96.5kg Highest BMI: 44.5 Current BMI: 39 Hello, Just checking in So its only a few more days til I reach the 2 week mark. My weight fluctuates slightly every time I check, but I'm approaching 96kg! Probably 96.5, really need to get digital scales so I can see the grams and stop guessing. My BMI is now under 40, yay! and I am now OBESE and not MORBIDLY OBESE. Double yay! Never thought I would be so happy to be called obese lol. The size 16 jeans I bought just last week are even becoming a little loose around the legs, although I have been wearing them for a few days now so maybe they are just stretched and need a wash to shrink them back I love my 3/4 jeans. I'm going to go back to Big W and get some more. I'm surviving just fine on the liquid phase, a normal menu for me at the moment would be: - Breakfast: cup of tea, then Optifast or Up'N'Go about an hour later - Lunch: Optifast, or Up'N'Go (alternating what I had for breakfast) - Dinner: 1/2 cup soup (this satisfies me just fine. I'm not needing more at this stage. - Snack: "Go Ghurt". Home-made icy pole from diet cordial or V8 juice. - Drinks: sipping water frequently. sometimes a diet cordial or cup of tea with skim milk and no sugar. It's a little bit weird to only be eating half cups at a time, but i'm using my toddler's bowls, so it looks like a normal serve I'm am looking forward to starting mushies in a couple of days, I'm going to make some Tuna Mornay for Wednesday night. I know what head hunger is now. Whenever I feel myself thinking about a sandwich or pasta for dinner, I make myself listen really hard to my body to see if the craving is coming from my tummy or my head. If I am genuinely feeling hungry between meals at the moment, a cup of tea or a little bit of yoghurt is satisfying enough, and all cravings disappear. I can also usually ignore them buy keeping busy, doing chores, reading a book etc. I was going to begin my walking again this morning, although as my son is in daycare, I've decided to take advantage of the quiet and clean house, and just relax with my book today. It feel really good. I think I'll go to Zumba this week, but just take it easy, maybe skip a few of the more taxing moves. Just to get back into things. I don't want to overdo it but I feel the sooner I get back into a bit of exercise the better WARNING, TMI: I still have my period, one that has lasted since I began the pre-op Optifast diet. Nearing its fourth week. Its really annoying, wish it would just disappear. I'm attributing it to the body shock and sudden weightloss. Hopefully it will sort itself out soon, otherwise I may take a trip to the GP to discuss it. I forgot to mention it at my 1 week checkup, but he's a man...just don't feel comfortable.

    A week later....

1 week post op Highest Weight: 108kg Current Weight: 98kg Highest BMI: 44.5 Current BMI: 40 Hello! So it's one week since my gastric banding surgery. I saw the clinic GP this afternoon and weighed in at 98kg. So I have lost 10kg since 1st October, 8kg since the beginning of Optifast (in the last 3 weeks). Happy with that! Today was the first morning that didnt hurt to get out of bed or bend down for something, so I'm healing well. The GP took out the staples from the incisions, and they are a tiny bit itchy, but it didnt really hurt, it feels like plucking hair out. I didnt get to look at them or take a photo before he put the sticky dressings back on. I've still got a pretty impressive bruise from when I was knocked out and in theatre. Jealous? Not doing too bad on liquids, not drinking NEARLY as much water as I should be. Have been drinking an optifast for one meal a day, an up'n'go for one meal, and I usually have soup for dinner. In between I'll have V8 juice, some drinking yoghurt or a small milo custard. Soooo looking forward to mushies, but the first week of liquids goes very quickly, and to be honest the first couple days you're so uncomfortable, you aren't that interested in food anyway. Well I wasnt. I've had vegetable and lentil soup, my cajun vegetable soup, homemade pumpkin soup, and tomorrow I'm making the potato and leek soup from the "Knife, Fork & Band" book.

    3 months in

Hi all, just wanted to introduce myself as I've just joined today. I was banded 20th May this year and have had 3 adjustments so far. I am slowly adapting to my new life, and loving that I'm getting more confidence as each day passes. Would love to hear everyone's stories and how they have dealt with their bands and how they have overcome their struggles. My main struggle is battling the psychological hunger, and wanting to reward myself with food. I've really had to adopt a strict mentality of only eating when I'm genuinely hungry and really listening to my body. My dietician and doctors have been absolutely fantastic, but would like to meet more people in my situation and talk to them. So please stop by and say hi! I hope you're all enjoying your Monday :-) CJ

    Surgery After Banding

Just wondering if anyone has had to have a tummy tuck after losing weight with the band? If so how much was it? How long after being banded did you wait? Did you first try to get rid of it with excercise? And did it hurt? Thanks for sharing

    Offically lost 50kg..

Just wanted to share with everyone... As of today I have offically lost 50kg since getting my band in dec 2010. Very happy with my milestone not far to go and I will be happy ( Well I am happy just need to tone up in areas ) Will definately put some pics up in the next couple of days. Health Improvement - Cleared of Diabetes Type 2 No longer have High Blood Pressure My Journey... I decided to get banded when I reached at my heaviest during pregnance 135kg... Once I'd had my son I got down to 127 and that was all I could manage on my own. I knew after trying to lose weight my whole life that I needed to make a decision to live and be here for my son. I became banded in December 2010 at 127kg. In the first three months I had three adjustments and lost 13.9Kg, the following three months three adjustments again and lost a further 21.7kg, the three months after that I had six adjustments and lost 6.2kg, and in the last few months I have had another 4 adjustments and lost 8.2kg. As you can see it has not been easy for me to find a green zone... during all these adjustments I had thoughts like maybe Its not for me if I can't find the elusive "Green Zone" ;p But I was never going to give up, my surgeon is fantastic and even though i felt silly at times having a fill and going back the next day as it was too tight he never swayed in his encouragement to help along my weight loss Journey. He now considers me one of his great success's which is encouraging to hear and makes me feel proud. I Have never once just relied on my band to lose weight which is I think the major reason I have lost 50kg to date. I started walking as soon as I was out of hospital albeit slow at first and not very far but this progressed to returning to the Gym and taking on Personal Training sessions twice a week. In August 8 months after being banded I decided to take it one step further and join Bootcamp... OMG what was I thinking lol but as hard as I found boot camp I felt sooo good after the session. So with the help of my Personal trainer, walking attending Boot camp twice a week I managed to further my weight loss journey and come closer to my goal. Again this has not been a walk in the park as many people percieve having a lap band to be, I have had night coughs, heart burn, reflux, shoulder pain, dehydration, just to name a few problems I've had to deal with throughout this journey. I think the biggest rewards for me so far are * No more medications *Being able to buy clothes off a rack (even though I still walk through the plus size sections force of habit) *Being able to put the tray down in front of me and not only be comfortable but have space on the plane * I finally feel like I'm smaller than my partner (this one is a biggy for me) * I can play with my son and not get puffed out and many many many many other reasons but I need not go on I think the picture is pretty clear. I am proud of myself for how far I have come. And I want my advice to be "Work hard, focus, if you lose focus just get it again, don't beat yourself up if you slip up, eveyone makes mistakes, the band is here to help and you will make it to your goal.....Never Never Never Give up" oh and one more thing before I get back to work... Banding Together is a wonderful place for advice, support and I am always available should anyone send me messages for help, or advice based on my own experiences.
