  1. Hi Everyone I was admitted to hospital at midday yesterday for my band removal and everything went well. The surgeon told me I was only needed in hospital overnight for observation so I was expecting to go home the next morning. He didn't see me in the recovery room and I sat in my bed all morning the next day waiting for him to turn up and discharge me whilst everyone else around me went home, but he was a no show. To make matters worse, the hospital staff would not give me any water or food as the surgeon had left nil by mouth instructions until he could see me. This wouldn't have been a problem if he had shown up in the morning like he was expected to, but after having tubes down my throat I wanted nothing more than some ice or water which the nursing staff were unwilling to give because he is very demanding and particular. I called his rooms from my bed and asked his ETA only to be informed that he has a full day of consultations booked and will visit mid to late evening. This really got on my nerves because he did the same thing to me 12 years ago when he put the lap band in, left me waiting a day longer than needed. I specifically told him when I went back to him about my issue with him doing that and set the expectation that he would discharge me immediately if there was no reason to keep me. Despite this, he chose to spend a day in his rooms collecting consultation fees as opposed to visiting his post-operative clients. The outcome is that I discharged myself at midday without seeing him and am now at home. I'm furious and am seriously considering cancelling my sleeve surgery in February and going with a different surgeon. Are my expectations too high?
  2. Hi guys, I'm very new to posting here but I'm not new to the band. So.... yesterday I finally had my band removed (woohoo). It's been 3.5 years and a very confusing time and a lot of wondering over what I was doing wrong. Brief history: Had the band put in a few years ago. Pre op diet was spot on and got my liver nice and small. Post op diet was fine, I am a stickler for rules and this was also the first surgery I had ever had in my life (at about 35 years old). Over the next few months I got several fills because I was having no restriction at all (I think I had 6-7 mls in total) and it was 4.5 months before I got my first "stuck" moment. Anyway over the next 12 months I was a textbook patient doing everything right and losing 20kg (40% toward target) in that first year. At this point something started happening, I don't know why or how or exactly when but slowly my intolerance to the band started and got worse over the next 2.5 years. Over this time all my fill was removed and the problems never eased. It got slowly worse and worse over this time, to a point where I was lucky to have one proper meal per day. I had tried to reset the band a couple of times (repeating the post op diet to the give the band a chance to settle down) and it didn't make any difference. I kept putting off doing anything else about it because I didn't want to risk losing the band and my weight loss. Fast forward to this year, and about 15kg gained back (thanks to sliders) and I finally went back to the surgeon. Had a barium swallow that showed everything was normal with the band but they did comment on the report that there was literally a pin hole for any food to pass through to my stomach, but no reason was found as to why this was happening. Had an endoscopy, everything normal. Frustration levels rising so I bit the bullet and decided to get the band out. Finally I had the band removed yesterday and I got the answers I had been waiting for....scar tissue!!!! Apparently I had normal scarring from the initial operation but inside the band itself I had a large amount of scarring which the surgeon said was very unusual. Basically from what I can gather the scarring was my body not tolerating the band. Because it wasn't scarring from the op itself the problem took a while to impact me (hence the first year going so well). He said the scarring was so bad that he had to separate and dissect it to allow my stomach to go back to it's normal shape. He said the scarring had been slowly getting worse over time so the band removal was inevitable and most importantly it was not my fault (yay for me!!). He equated it to being like a callous on your foot, the more wear and tear the worse it gets. I feel so amazing to find out that it wasn't me doing anything wrong it was simply my body rejecting the band. If I hadn't had it out now it would have continued to have gotten worse. It is such a relief to know that I can't blame myself and there was nothing I could've done differently. I don't regret getting the band and having this experience because I would have always wondered what if... and boy have I learned a lot of lessons along the way. So now I'm am looking into my other options, seeing the surgeon next week to discuss this with him. Knowing I have other options still gives me hope. Anyway I really wanted to post this because one, I am so happy I had to share and two, I wanted others out there to know my story in case they are having similar issues. Sometimes it's just not our fault that things don't work out. Jo
  3. Ok so I am 3 days post op and feeling pretty decent pain wise - my dr was right this is nothing like having the band placed I am feeling pretty fine already. Except for the weight gain. I have been all drugged up and sleeping erratically so I have been eating erratically too but I don't know where I am at. The scales have clearly gone up a couple of kgs - part of that would be attributed to my binge eating leading up to the surgery. I am totally unsure what eating normal looks like now. I mean I do realistically but I haven't been eating regaulary breakfast, lunch and dinner so I don't know how much I am over eating or what. I am still craving sweets and junk which has been my biggest failure. I am booked in for the sleeve 27th Jan, and I sort of told myself it was ok if I put on some weight but as long as I don't go over 100kg which I have gone up to already. I am terrified of what I am capable of between now and then. It's like all my willpower has completely evaporated. I imagine just by having e band out and eating more I am likely to gain. Even if I am eating what is considered a normal amount...us WLS people are different I guess. I will talk more to my dr when I see him for a follow up in weeks, I obviously did not ask enough questions. I am thinking of trying to do lite n easy for some of the time to manage my eating a little. I only want to get 5 days breakfast, lunch and dinner. I am hoping this will help. I can't really afford it but if it is going to help me have a better control on what I am putting in my mouth then it is going to be worth it.
  4. I posted awhile ago now about making the decision to go from a band to a sleeve. I only had the band placed at the beginning of May, but I am so ready to have it out. When it was working well it felt too tight and even with the tiniest amount out I am hungry all the time. I don't feel I made the right choice. I am so pro weight loss surgery though. I know most people feel as though a bypass is extreme and everyone says don't do it but honestly if I could that is what I want. But my surgeon is going to do the sleeve for me. I am getting the band out 18th Nov, so only a couple of weeks to go. I am really hoping that I have more success with the sleeve - I am really looking forward to eating certain things again - mostly healthy things too. I am absolutely shit scared about the time in between band removal and the sleeve surgery which I am going to push for early Feb. I had lost 18kg (93kg) but I seem to be bouncing back up as I am at 96kg now (15kg lost). And I haven't even had the band removed yet! My whole health at the moment has been really shit. I have basically stopped exercising and have been eating a lot of shit foods (why is it so easy to eat junk?!). So I know exactly why I have put weight back on. It's like I can even get the motivation to try at the moment. I keep trying to work myself up to it but I haven't succeeded, yet! However, I have recurrent major depression and that has been spiraling the last month or so...I know the impact that has...but I keep trying to push through, and the psychiatrist and I are swapping and adding different medications so we will get there eventually. I remain hopeful, and I probably depend to much on the idea that weight loss surgery is going to be it for me. But inside I know that it is a tool to utilise and you only get out what you put in. As the sleeve surgery gets closer I will need to get as much support as I can to make the most of this opportunity. It works if you work it.
  5. I had the band placed at the start of May, it took me what felt like forever to find my sweet spot but I believe I am there, actually I am definitely there. For the past month or so I have started contemplating living with the band long term, essentially forever. And I can't say I have been feeling all that positive about it. All up so far I have lost about 17kg, which I am stoked about, truly I am, I have gained some confidence back & after what feels like a long time I have been loving shopping and clothes & feeling really good about it (except for my bank balance, which is always depressing after I visit the shops, I may have a bit of a problem). Anyway, I know that down the track, even if it isn't for another 10 years, chances are I will need to replace the band for one reason or another, & thinking along that track I have being limited on the types of foods I can eat. Particularly because I eat a LOT of chicken breast, which is now very hard for me to tolerate. But it is so easy to resort to sliders like ice cream & chocolate which are foods I have always struggled with, binged on, they are my go to foods for sure. After seeing my surgeon I had really already decided that I wanted to change to the sleeve but I gave it time to think it over, question the differences etc. What I would like is the bypass, I realise what seems to be the majority of people consider that this is to extreme when you take into account the long term ramifications and the battle it can be to get optimum nutrition, but my surgeon doesn't do bypass anyway as he also believes they are too extreme or some other such rubbish. So for me to go the bypass I would need to go with another surgeon, which would be fine, but all together I would be out of pocket around 6K, after refund, rebates etc. And my surgeon is willing to remove my band, and go back and do the sleeve for free. He is even going to see if the anaesthetist will do it for no out of pocket. At the most I will pay one hospital excess of $650 because I can't get the sleeve done until 2016 which may class as a new year with Bupa, but I wont know for sure until I check with them. So at the nd of the day, for me, there is really no question. I have booked in to have the band removed on Nov 18th, one day before my sons birthday, he is happy for me to go in then, he said it is a birthday present because having a health mum is a present. He is 11, and not always that sweet but I thought it was lovely. Obviously I have to wait out the 3 month period until I can have the sleeve done. I am shit scared about the 3 month wait. I realise I need to have a lot of willpower over this period because I do not want to regain a bunch of weight. It will likely bring on my depression & zap a bunch of my confidence. But it will be worth it. I understand people getting worried & stressed about surgery but to me it doesn't really worry me at all. I get a little anxious a couple days before, but I don't worry to much about the surgery. I know there are risks but I just hope they don't happen to me, but it's out of my hands no way I can see into the future & check the outcome - what will be will be. I don't know if this makes me brave or stupid. Well this post have been a bit of a ramble because I am tired and just bumbling along so I'll leave it there. Goodnight sweet dreams xx
  6. I'm having my band removed tomorrow as I was having difficulty living any kind of normal life - lots of vomiting and painful blockages. The plan is to heal for a few months then go for the sleeve in February. Would love to hear from anyone else who has gone through this: - what can I expect after the band has been removed? - will my recovery from the op be quicker than when the band was fitted and how soon am I likely to get back to "normal" foods - not sure how ling the liquid / mushy stages will need to be - very nervous about putting the weight back on - I have lost 16kg with the band and am now 94kg - any tips? Sorry, lots fo questions - feeling nervous tonight!
  7. Hi there, I was banded after my children. I went from 60 kilo to 100 kilo - thank lollies and Magnum ice creams for that. Always into a quick fix I came into money and lap banded y elfin melbourne (the doctor has now retired). So 10 years on. I'm down to 65 kilo, been struggling with the last few 5 for years but my issues are….. 1. the hideous bump stat sticks through my clothes when to tight. 2. years of secret vomiting. 3.an abidance of quick exe in my hand bag. 4. not being able to swallow a plate of salad, or eat a stake, not even drink a full glass of water, but eat an easy chocolate bar instead. 5. people questioning my bulimia. Basically I'm over it. I'm now poor and want it gone. My health is crap and I want to with er move this thing behind a muscle so i may reactivate in 20 years time…or lose it all together. Anyone know of a Melbourne doctor who will discuss this with me? Is there a possibility of bulk billing? I've already had some tests on my dodgy stomach. Any leads to someone great to talk to would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  8. Good morning all As you all know I have made no secret of my dissatisfaction on this forum with the band. I was banded by Dr Khaleal at Concord Private Hospital in July 2012. Since then, I have lost between 23-26kg (I say that, because I am constantly re-losing the same 3kg and have been for about the last 6 months). I don’t actually attribute much, if any, of my weight loss to the band. In fact, I’d say it’s only been a hindrance than a help. The times I’ve been too tight I could only get down sliders, or when I try to eat healthy and end up in the ER with food majorly stuck. At present, I have no fill in my band. I had a stuck moment in December while on holidays and the ER doctor had to remove my fill so I could get water down. I am not interested in having any more fill, as fill = miserable and stuck moments! Recent blood tests reveal that I am very healthy in terms of everything; except insulin. My insulin levels are 23 fasting. My starting weight was 142kg, I am currently hovering between 115.7 and 119kg. My goal is 80kg and a healthy size 12 (currently a 16-18). I am doing boot camp 4 days per week and counting calories. Today, I have my first appointment to speak to the bariatric nurse at my clinic to have the band out and get the sleeve. My wonderful fiancée told me last night that he will pay for everything (roughly $6k with PHI) because he wants me to succeed. In our community, being “fat†makes you the town gossip. And even though he loves me how I am (heck, he met me at 142kg and loved me then), he is sick to death of us both copping it because I’m overweight. And yep, people should but out – but they don’t. Anyone with Arab family and friends will understand what I mean. To them, image is everything. I must admit, I am actually SCARED of having the sleeve. I’m scared that I will fail. I’m scared that I will be the one who ends up in hospital for weeks on end. I’m scared I’ll die early as this is a new operation with no long-term studies on longevity. Has anyone else felt like this? Did you still go ahead?
  9. Phase one is now complete...band got removed yesterday and it's so much better coming out than going in! Bring on Phase 2 - sleeving - which is booked for 27 February 2014. Let the hunger games begin
  10. after much waiting and impatience, my surgery is tomorrow (Thursday) to have my gastric band removed. I'm feeling rather nervous about it, I am worried that they won't be able to take it out at all and I'll be stuck with it. I'm worried that they will take it out and tell me I can't have a sleeve or bypass. I'm worried that once I recover from this surgery that I will gorge myself stupid on food and not be able to stop. I'm worried that something will go wrong and my family will have to live without me the way I am now. (I'm the income earner in the family).
  11. Oh my! I just realised that in 2 months from today (7 November) I am having my band removed in preparation for a gastric sleeve! I only made the appointment/booked the surgery yesterday and it seemed so far away then!!
  12. Hi guys Hope everyone is well my journey hasn't been to good. Firstly when I had the band put in I had an anxiety attack in hospital just over a year ago. I've never had one before. I started loosing weight after that but had anxiety since on and off. Then Iast November I had a fill and whilst driving home I felt I couldn't breathe and ended up having a major panic attack and ended in hospital. Went to clinic and they removed all the fill. Since then I've been suffering with anxiety, every little change in my body I notice and stress about. I can't help but relate it the band, although I know it's not the only reason. This has changed my life completely... Now thinking of having my band removed, but that also makes me anxious. Anyone had it out and how did it go.. What's the recovery time, is it easier to have it out than in? Any help will be grateful
