    Morning Mayhem

I have had numerous restriction levels during the 3.5 years I've had my band. I still remember the day I experienced what restriction felt like for the first time! I had just been to see my surgeon for the second time since the operation and I had gone from 2mls to 4mls. That evening I made a chicken and cheese toasted sandwich, which at 2mls wouldn't have been a problem whatsoever. I took a bite, not even thinking, chewed and swallowed and gulp... What was happening... When people ask me what I mean when I say 'it won't work' or 'it didn't work' or 'my band didn't like it', I find it really hard to explain to them what it actually feels like. For me, I have 4 different feels when I eat something. 1. No problem, goes down with absolutely zero problem, like I don't even have a band. 2. Feels momentarily uncomfortable: but I know within 30seconds to 1minute it will pass through the band. 3. Uncomfortable verging on a little painful: this will take anywhere between 5-20minutes to pass the band and I know I have to give up. 4. Stuck. Extremely painful, will 100% need to bring the food back up, excessive saliva. So that day, that I had taken a bite of the sandwich, I was probable at a level 2. But I gave up straight away because that feeling scared me. Over the years I became more brave/stupid, about pushing limits with my band and what I could eat. It's not uncommon for me, now, to eat something and straight away know it's a number 3, but persevere for up to 2-3 hours to eat, just half of whatever it is. This is when I might have a bite and it takes up to 20 minutes for the discomfort to not actually dissapate, but just decrease in intensity, for me to take another bite. This leads to a couple of hours of feeling uncomfortable and slightly in pain, all for a few mouthfuls of food. That, is SO, stupid. What I'm doing here is letting my mind win. And simultaneously traumatising my band. It also ruins the rest of my day because I have pushed my limits so far, that any time later that day I try to eat/drink something, it 'doesn't work'. How do I get my 'newly banded' mindset back where I was so careful of everything I put in my mouth and I was so worried about feeling number 2 that I rarely every experienced number 3 or 4? Does anyone else have a similar experience, or a 'levels of restriction' scale they acknowledge?

    I'm Banded !

Here's my banding story because over the last few months I've enjoyed reading other peoples stories and they've helped to make my experience easier. I got into the hospital (The Alfred Centre), with my sister, at 12noon. We only waited a minute or two before I was called in to start the process ... booking in, anaesthetist, pharmacist, nurse, weighed, changed into highly fashionable gown, booties and cap, and then to the theatre waiting room. A little before 1pm a lovely nurse came and took me to theatre. I was very nervous and barely holding myself together and all the staff were so patient with me. (I've previously had some bad experiences with surgery ... in particular a gall bladder operation that started out keyhole and ended up as major open surgery. My biggest fear going into this was that they'd have to convert to open surgery.) I feel very out of control when I have to lay down, and I had so many people buzzing around me ... nurse, 2 anaesthetists, surgeon ... so I told them I was feeling very out of control and the nurse gave me a tube and told me to squeeze it, which I did, and asked why. He told me, "Now you have something you're in control of." He was so lovely. The anaesthetist had 2 goes at getting a drip into my hand and it just wasn't working and I began to feel very overwhelmed so I asked if they could all just stop what they were doing for a minute so I could get myself together. They obliged and were all so lovely. In the end the anaesthetist ended up putting the drip in the inside of my elbow (where you get a blood test done) and then once I was under she put another drip in my other hand and another cannula to monitor my blood pressure. I was also very apprehensive about the oxygen mask as prior to a previous surgery when they put the mask on my face it wasn't turned on and I couldn't breathe at all. I told the nurse this so he very kindly blew the oxygen on my neck before he put the mask over my face to reassure me that it was turned on. I can't be grateful enough to all those theatre staff for how patient and understanding they were with me. I was out of surgery at 3:30pm and awake by about 4pm. I was in a lot of pain but just normal surgical pain so I knew they'd managed to do it all keyhole. I was so relieved. They gave me oxycontin through my drip and topped it up about 6 times before I had optimal pain relief. I was still in pretty bad pain but there's only so much they can do as I'm very sensitive to the side effects of a lot of medications. I was grateful to have no nausea at all. They gave me some concoction of about 4 different anti-nausea medications. My blood pressure was a little low in recovery but went up to be quite high once I got onto the ward at about 5pm. It came back down by about midnight. They said it was just because of the pain. They also gave me one anti-coagulant injection whilst I was under the anaesthetic too. I had some wound pain (3 small wounds, one larger one for the port), but the worst pain was from the gas ... my left shoulder, all around my chest and it felt like someone had poured broken glass down my spinal column. I found the pain moved around as I changed positions ... it seemed to find the highest point. I spent the night alternating from laying on my left side to my right side and a little time on my back. I found that if I was patient and just rode the pain out each time I changed positions, if I stayed still the pain completely subsided and I was able to sleep for an hour at a time. I was up and walking around only about an hour or so after getting back to the ward cause I was desperate to wee and once I started was up every couple of hours. Because I was up and down so much I didn't need anymore anti-coagulant injections and it really helped with the pain. I was up, again, around 11pm, and as I bent over I let out an enormous burp, then another 2, and within minutes my back/chest/shoulder pain had halved and I was much more comfortable. I still have a little shoulder pain now but it's more just discomfort. (It's 8:30pm the following day.) I've been taking panadol and endone for pain relief and will continue the panadol but probably only take 1 endone before bed and see if I can manage on just panadol tomorrow. The wound pain is quite minimal now and I was even able to lay flat on my tummy earlier when I had a nap. My dinner last night was a little black tea and chicken noodle soup without noodles (my sister called it chicken water). Then over the next 6 hours I determinedly managed to get a small apple juice and small orange jelly into me and they tasted like heaven. I don't have any stitches ... just steri-strips and have to see my GP in a week to have the dressings changed. Then back to the clinic a week after that, then a check up with the surgeon 2 weeks after that. The surgeon today told me I have a small amount of fill in the band. I'm not feeling any restriction but I've been sipping very slowly and it's only fluids. I'm not at all hungry but have managed to follow the menu guidelines my dietician gave me. (Juice for breakfast, a small skinny chai latte on drive home, milk thinned pumpkin soup for lunch, yogurt milk for afternoon tea, and more soup for dinner.) Oh ... one last thing ... immediately after the surgery, after every single sip of fluid I had, after a few seconds my tummy was cramping for a second or two. Not badly but enough for me to notice. The nurse said it was normal and it's settled down now.

    Hi! I'm New!

Hi everyone. I'm Brittany. I'm new to this site, but not to lapband. I had mylapband in Novemeber 2010 and by december 2011 I had lost 40kgs. Since then I have unfortunately gained 20kgs back. Due to my lack of determination and frequent unfils. So now I am back and ready for round two. This time I'm looking to gain some online support because as we know, the more you've lost the harder it is to lose. I was delighted at how quickly my weight originally fell off, but now it's at a snails pace, and I am not the most patient of people. So hopefully you will be seeing and hearing a lot more from me as I plan to come to this site for motivation and encouragement
  4. Well.. This morning I thought I would go ahead and take some photos as I haven't felt that I have lost that much weight... and well.. I think the photos speak for themselves! I have been working so hard and exercising every day and I am a bit blown away to be honest! Ladies, all of you can achieve this if you haven't already! I truly believe it. The photo on the left was taken Nov last year, I got bigger than this and my tummy poked out about 40cm and was really round, Ill track a photo down. I just want to say thanks to my X partner for breaking up with me and helping me drop 5kg in 7 days! Loser!
  5. Well what a month I've had! I did end up having the sleep study and found out I have sleep aponea a week before surgery on the 7th of May. I went and paid an obscene amount of money to hire a cpap machine and was told I need to be able to use it before surgery... yes that's right one week before my date. Oh great! I did try the machine a few times and I can confidently confirm I hate cpap with a passion. Ok I know that having slight claustrophobia doesn't help and yes only one week to get used to it was very very unrealistic. To cut a long story short unfortunately my surgery was cancelled as my surgeon agreed that 1 week wasn't long enough.. but not before I had already done 10 days of optifast. The new date was set to the 7th of June and yes I had to do opti-puke alllll over again.. oh joy! I was not as compliant with the opti the second time around.. I can put that down to having had used all motivation the first time around haha. I also had my sleep guy give me mild anti anxiety meds to help get me used to the cpap machine. Surgery day snuck up on me and all of a sudden it was REAL and going ahead. No turning back. I had to remember why I was doing this. Laying on the trolley about to go into theater was down right scary for someone whom does not like hospitals. My mind was ticking over why I was doing this and wondering what the hell i'd got myself into.. but damn it .. I was going to do it and finish what I had set out to do. Usually I try to self sabotage anything to do with weight loss but I put that demon back in it's box and stuck it out. I woke up in recovery groggy and sore. thankfully the drugs kicked in. I don't know why or how but theater nurses seem to be the most caring and compassionate people I have ever encountered. Once in the ward I was sleeping on and off. My wonderful husband kept me company until visiting hours were over. That night the nurses just kept the oxygen on me and i didn't end up using my cpap at all!! ( after all that!!) The next day I had the dreaded barium swallow and also got to meet my roomy whilst we were waiting for the xrays. Today I'm feeling better. Not using as much pain killers and able to move around without too much discomfort. Ok wow I have waffled on a bit. haha I cannot wait to get down to under 100kg .. it's my first goal. Thanks for reading, Teena
  6. So here I am 6 days post op. Let's go back to the beginning 5th of March checking in at Saint George Private Hospital 6:00am in the morning I was nervous, scared for someone who is a major control freak I was at my breaking point once we checked in I waited in the lobby a nurse came out and ushered us to another part of the hospital she told me I was lucky number 1! Great I was nervous anxious during the short wait and the 21 questions from every nurse I got dressed into my gown and measured for the pressure socks at this point I was waiting with my fiancé for about 20minutes 8 began getting emotional crying because I was happy, excited and scared a lot of 'what ifs' were rushing through my mind I remember telling my fiancé how much I loved him and finally once we said our final prayers and kissed each other one last time I was wheeled off into the waiting bay - there I met with my anaesthesiologist and given a mild cocktail sedative to calm my nerves and BOY did it calm me I felt like I'd drank half a bottle of vodka I may have said some pretty silly things.... Then boom the last thing I remember was the bright halo light above me then I was awake not in pain but disgruntled I had oxygen tubes up my nose I was on an IV drip I was being told I need to wake up I kept saying all I wanted to see was my fiancé to know that I wasn't in limbo but that I was out safe needless to say I became fairly nasty I was swearing and very angry.... The nurse may have had to arrange some sedatives for me after the warm fuzzy feeling came back I was out I remember opening my eyes and being wheeled to my room I caught a glance of my fiancé and I knew finally I was alright. At this point I was told it was 10am I spent most of the day sleeping and on oxygen I was pretty drugged out- unlike my room mate who was talking and fine...I suppose the drugs affect everyone differently I recieved pain medication quite regularly and I fuzzily remember saying my pain was about an 8 no shoulder pain just abdomen pain I felt tight like I'd been stabbed Finally I woke up at 4pm feeling so much better I ripped the oxygen tubes off and buzzed for the nurse went to the bathroom got changed feeling a lot better still sore but at least I was alert, in the bathroom I looked and the incision sights 5 in total no bigger then my pinky fingers in length I did get emotional I actually did it! The night went on pretty casually For dinner I took a few sips of the soup which was pretty good but after a while I was not having it, had some jello yea didn't like that much either OMG the apple juice was heaven that I don't know but apple juice it was perfect enough it was cool and crisp my mouth tasted arid I slept through the night and woke up only once for some more pain medication next day I was discharged, I've spent most of the past couple days recovering the pain has gotten better mostly gas pain I've noticed my incisions have been itchy but I just rub them gently I'm on paradime forte and it knocks me out pretty well ive been having some fluids - liquid meals and soups but not my 3 a day like I was told less maybe 1 mostly I've been drinking Gatorade to keep hydrated and Luke warm water ahhh heaven I had some peppermint tea to help with gas it did a bit but not much I've been rubbing efficasent oil to relieve gas an old Filipino remedy it's been working perfectly I rub and push downwards and am usually relieved after - been walking a bit but I get dizzy when I do. so far I am pleased no hunger cravings if anything the idea of 'eating' grosses me out and freaks me out... Well we shall see. On wards and upwards
