  1. Hi! All, I am seriously looking to get lap banding surgery done. I have consulted a doctor yet. My GP said it is a good idea to get it done. I am weighing around 161 kg at the moment. I target is reach below 100 kg. I want to do this for my self and also for wife and two sons who are very young. I want to be able play with then run around with them. I am hoping to get advice on choosing a surgeon. I am living in South East of Melbourne. I have looked up on few places but I do not know who to choose. Can anyone please give me advice on this. Hoping to get the surgury done in either Valley Private or St John of God Berwick. Thanking in advance for any advice or guidance.
  2. I had the band placed two days ago yet I am not really feeling any restriction. I expected that I would especially considering the swelling. I can get water and other liquids down really easily, I haven't and wont be trying anything pureed or solid until it is time but it feels as though I could. Has anyone else had this experience? I know it is still early days but I'd feel better knowing if others had gone through this too.
  3. Deex

    Booked, October 14th.

Greetings, Today i officially met my surgeon, Dr Kuzinkovas. I am being banded through SIOS at Ashfield Private Hospital in Sydney on: October 14th I can't begin to even explain how excited i am about finally setting a date! At my appointment my mother and i fell inlove with my surgeon, his Russain accent and slick pinstriped suit. He excuded a mass amount of confidence and was really thorough about the surgical procedure. He did however try to recommend the bypass instead of the banding but as much as i appreciated his medical opinion, his presistance and knowledge, i chose what i was most comfortable with and that was banding. I am happy with my decision, feel extremely comfortable around Dr K and cannot wait to begin! Any other October babies that would like to come along for the ride with me, please feel free to contact me. Always looking for support! Happy dance in 3..2..1 Deex
  4. Hi everyone, I wonder if anyone else has had similar thoughts but... I am scared that because we are all concentrating on what we eat, and its timing and how much we eat etc that we could be setting our selves up for eating problems? I don't know if its just because I'm a new bandit or if people who have been banded for much longer still have this thought but this I guess is how it all starts? Our surgeons give us a goal weight, and we have our own personal goal weight which often seems to be about 5kg's lower... Has anyone else thought about this? Jen xx

Hi everyone, I'm banding on Friday July 12th at Sydney Adventist Hospital (I hope nothing goes wrong just because Im an athiest!) This has been a deeply personal journey for me, and one which - surprisingly - has led to a lot of shocking judgement from others. ("Why, that's the easy option?", "Oh come on, just train harder", "It's because you don't eat well enough.") Well duhhhh. By day, I'm a Company Director, and travel quite a lot for work with global clients. But at night, I'm secretly terrified and equally excited at the journey that lies ahead as a bandit! I can't wait! I've battled with the weight for 15 years and I know the lap band will be a wonderful tool for me. So I'm joining on here for support and to listen, and to share my experience in the hope that we can all learn from one another.
  6. Hi everyone, I have my appointment with my doctor on Monday to discuss my weightless options. I am 19 and have PCOS and am 120kg (170cm). He seems pro-nasal sprays and less invasive techniques but I've done my research, and with my illness (which results in a lifetime of chronic obesity) I am really keen to get this surgery. So can anyone help me on what to say to my doctor and share your past experiences visiting your GP for the first time to enquire about the surgery? I'm just worried the doctor won't take my decision to seriously and shrug it off. Thanks & love, Jo

  8. Hi guys, I have a few concerns.. I have about 7-8ml in my 10-12ml band. My portions size is smaller, but I think my eating problem is a a lot of a mental thing too. Anyway yesterday I had a small lunch of chicken and thai salad... Dinner was beef and salad stirfry (lots of chili)... I felt I ate heaps less and ate slow plus I also didnt finish everything in my bowl... So I felt a few niggling pains yesterday near my port, didnt think anythink of it... Woke up this morning and I have a little lump near my port! My port feels flat and normal. I have this sensation that I need to burp, but nothing??? I'm having my morning coffee, but I think it will be a shake day. If no improvement by tomorrow I will have to ring the surgery (which is 5hrs away, based in adelaide). Has anyone had anything similar??? and do you know what it was??? I've been banded since 20/07/2012 Cheers, Nicky

    Can I get the surgery?

Hi everyone, My name is Joanne and I am considering getting the Gastric lap banding surgery. I'm just on here asking around to hear other peoples stories after they got their surgery and just wanting to know how to go about asking my GP for it. So before that just a little about myself: I'm 19 years old and I live in Australia. I am 125kg and 5"5' (170cm). I've been overweight all my life, pretty much can't remember ever being a healthy weight. I am newly diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and that pretty much set off my want to have this surgery. Having PCOS pretty much puts me at risk at developing diabetes (actually, I'm going to get it eventually) and heart attacks (7 time more likely). It also signs me up to a lifetime of chronic obesity and depression. A year ago, I was in a really bad place and I was constantly depressed and had terrible anxiety. I couldn't get out of bed and gained 10kg. I hated myself and hated my body and I self harmed to take my anger out against it. This all happened because my education, family and social life were all directly affected by my obesity. I have no relationship with my father because he's ashamed of my weight and has constantly criticised me since I was 12 about it, I was placed on Academic Warning at university because I didn't want to attend class as I thought I was getting judged. And my emotional and physical health was deteriorating. It was just hell. Long story short; my mom came back and started to live with my, and I guess it really helped a bit and I have got some confidence and routine back in my life. I'm much happier. So back on topic - I really would like to get the surgery and I would like to know if you guys think I'm eligible for it and tell me how yours are going. Also, how do I go about asking my GP for it? Sorry for the long post, hope someone can reply. Thanks & love, Jo x
  10. I did something today that I normally wouldn't do... While at the hospital waiting in clinic - I saw a young guy (couldn't be older than 20 maybe younger?) with his mum who was about to start the whole banding experience. Quite frankly he look quite scared, so I approached them while they were waiting also and let them know there was THIS great support group website/forum that I have found so much help with as there is such a lack of support post banding through the public system. I told them that it's JUST people sharing their experiences, however it's great to know your not alone when certain things happen and its the first time. I told the mother "I'm sure you'll be a bit like my mum & there's so theres a section with recipes when you run out of ideas" - (as I can't physically stand long enough to make anything at the moment due to my OA and nerve damage, not even a cup of tea, mum does my food for me. She is registered as my carer as most days I can't even dress myself). I hope I did the right thing? Would you do this?
  11. Hi everyone, just posting in each state... If you have been banded or had a sleeve done in December 2012, drop by here, and let us know (so not only can I add you to the bandit surgery date list for December) but come join the conversation with others that have been banded in the same month as you! We'd love to have you Jen xx
  12. Hi Bandits, I was talking to my neighbour this morning about being banded, and she had some interest in looking into it especially after I was banded. She has tried everything from shakes to weight watchers and things in between with no long term benefit. This lady is like a second mum to me, and there's nothing more I would like, than to see her succeed with much needed weight loss. After praising this forum so much, I thought I might actually ask the question she really wanted to know... 'Have many of you sustained your weight loss long term (over 2 or 3 years if not longer?) and how is you health and lifestyle now?' My beautiful neighbour is a mum to 3 grown up kids, with the youngest still living at home, but she works a full time job, and often finds herself forgetting to eat as she gets very busy at work (even though good intentions are brought to work everyday ie yogurt/fruit etc). She has a short lunch break which she likes to fit in a daily walk. What she eats for dinner is often swayed by what her son wants. She is a fabulous cook. She knows if she gets upset or overly emotional, she'll head for food which she's trying to stop. Post Christmas she is going to try light n' easy for a fully committed few months. If she see's positive results she may stick with this but I thought its better to ask then to not know. Hopefully there's enough of you who can answer this question above, so a preemptive thank you for your input. Jen xx

    Date in information

Having been the bandit who has started a month list for the December operations, can I suggest an 'option' to put your banding/sleeve date in your information about you?
  16. Hi, I'm slightly worried as I've picked up something yuck, mucus and coughing galore, GP put me on antibiotics but my operation is on Tuesday! I'm already a complicated patient with my stupid throat so it can't be a normal intubation and bad hip, and needing a scope beforehand and being in HDU after just because of all of the above. Has anyone gone in to surgery unwell? On antibiotics?
  17. Hi, This is my first post! I have found this form to be really helpful in my research about banding. I have just received a DVD and info from CBS in Glen Iris, and I am considering Dr Stewart Skinner for my surgeon. A question I have for you all is about how your family and friends reacted to he news you wanted lap banding? I have noticed some people get a little uncomfortable and dont know what to say. Either they have certain views about it - like its a cop-out, or that exercise and diet should be enough. Or they dont know how to say how happy they are you are finally going to lose the weight. I did lose weight, twice, but both times - in hindsight - were not healthy. First was eating 900 calories a day and I got very skinny. Then I put on 30-40kg. I went on atkins and reductil and lost 30kg in 6-9 months. When I moved to Australia I put it all and some more back on. Since then i have tried CSIRo, weight watchers, atkins again, lite and easy, jenny craig and more. I have yo-yo'd up and down by about 15kg. I have had 3 personal trainers and now have several injuries that prevent me from working out and doing certain exercises. To top it all off - I had a genetic report done a few years back which identified that I have the FTO, MC4R, INSIG2 and PCSK1 genes - all related to obesity. I didn't choose lap banding as a first choice, but the diet pills had awful side effects, I can do limited exercise, I have a sedentary job, and diets are not working. Some of the reactions to my decision have been surprising and I am wondering if peoples attitudes to the procedure change once they see the results in you? Thanks

    Step One - the GP

There are a lot of things you hear about weight loss. Some good, some consider miracles and some that are just so bad you just want to ignore them. I think its just for the best to stay away from things with the word celebrity linked with them! I was at home recently, off work with the flu and I said to myself that why not! Why not take this opportunity to ask my doctor about banding, I was already going for a medical certificate anyway, may as well make the most of it. So off I went. While it wasn't one of the worst conversations I have ever had to have, it certainly wasn't easy. I'm not one that knows what a real therapy session is like, I normally can handle making sense of my life just fine on my own; but to actually say to someone else that you have a problem and you need help was the biggest thing I have ever done in my life. This coming from someone that is use to having to deal with his own problems and having to open up and to share what I and I'm sure so many you on this journey would consider, their darkest hour. It is hard to admit what you really eat. My GP is very understanding, very supportive of my goal. After the blood tests came back ok, just a slightly fatty liver and nothing else to worry about. We discussed other options and after laying out my life story he sent me away with that next nail blighting task, a referral to a specialist! It sat on the kitchen table for a few weeks, often I would just stare at it, thinking can I do this? Should I do this? It didn't help that some liked the idea and some thought it was a very drastic thing to undergo. But ultimately it is only you that can decide what is right for you, only you know the pain and the suffering that has brought you to this life changing decision. "Hello this is Sue." a soft but welcoming voice came over the phone. "Hi Sue, this is David. I have a referral and I would like to make an appointment." By this time again I was starting to think 'should I just hang up, no be strong, you have to do this'. "Ok great, the earliest appointment I have is in about a month and half, how about Wednesday lunchtime?" I was hoping to get in sooner, stop all that thinking and just get on with the action, now theres just more time to sit and ponder. Do I have a choice? Not really, coming so close to Christmas I just have to take what's available. Damn you referral, you sat there mocking me, making me question but eventually helped me to build up courage. "Oh really, he's that booked out, ok thanks, yes that should be fine." "Ok great I have booked you in with the specialist and the dietitian afterwards. We also have a group information session next week if your interested just to find out more about the procedures, would you be interested?" I needed to know more than what Wikipedia says and some of the horror stories I've Googled! "Yes that sounds interesting, please sign me up!" There it's done, you can relax and stop thinking about it."Ok thanks David, see you soon!"

    In the beginning...

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. Your friends still loved and supported you however as time went by it became harder and harder to find any clothes that fit, let alone any that looked any good. It was the simple things, the little things that broke the straw of my back. Not being able to tie a shoe lace easily, having to be careful to not put your back out getting out of the car, working up a sweat just walking up to the second floor. It is time. Most of my life I’ve been a big guy, starting in Primary School and the lunches from the corner shop. Starting out as one sausage roll and small Big M to two sausage rolls and a large Big M in the later years. I was a fussy kid, my friends would argue that I still am. Although I think the closer ones would agree that I have spread my wings and started to vary my palate in recent years. Before my school years I would live on frankfurts and mashed potato, hot chips and soft drink. My mother was also a big woman back then, while she did her best to keep me fed, I was too strong for her and she had no choice but to give in. Had I wished she stood firm, yes however I don’t blame her for it, stubborn kids are not easy to deal with and she just wanted to make me happy at the time. By 14 I remember that I was 80Kg, not sure of my height at the time so I can’t give an indication of the BMI I was back then, but I was big; big enough to be singled out at school, high school especially. While I would like to say that I have fond memories of my childhood dreams, there were also the not so pleasant experiences. It was expected, every fat kid gets picked on at school and I usually took it on the cuff of my shirt. It did bother me, but back then there wasn’t much I wanted to do about it and by the time I was a senior I was in a great group of friends that kind of shielded me from those that their only pass time was to barrage the emotional living daylights out of the venerable. By the end of high school I was about 110-115kg, 175cm, giving me a BMI of approximately 37, the Very High Risk category… By the time I finished University, living away from home I worked my way up to 122Kg and a BMI of 39.8, just a stone’s throw away from that life changing term… Morbid Obesity. Well at that point I made some sacrifices in my life and with the support of a very good friend of mine that played professionally in the NRL, supported and motivated me to make some changes. Well what a time in my life that was! Starting 4thMay 2009 I began a regimented routine of 6 small, relatively healthy meals a day along with around 2 physical boot camp style exercise sessions with my NRL buddy. On the 8th October 2009, just five months later I had lost 10.2Kg. I was a new person! I experienced designer clothes for the first time. I remember the day I was in Sydney and visited my first Industry store. I purchased a pair of size 40 (the largest they make) jeans. That was the best day of my life. I wore those jeans like a badge of honour. Sadly that was to come to a crashing halt and like all good things, they come to an end. I lost my focus and my motivation, but worst of all I lost my support. My buddy that was helping me got contract to play elsewhere and had to move away. I tried to keep up my motivation and determination however I feel that with a combination of not having any more one-on-one support, that someone to keep you motivated and focused, I lost mine. I tried to keep off the bad foods, keep riding to work but it all just fell apart and here I am, 12Kg heavier than when I started, that’s right folks, 134Kg with a BMI of 44, Morbidly Obese. While this is a sad time in my life, like the phoenix is reborn out of the ashes of its demise, I too will be reborn and starting now I have begun the mission of taking back my body, my life, my soul. Please join me while I take this journey of rediscovery and new heath through the miracle that is gastric banding and the transformation that is about to take place. Fighting the food fight, one band at a time.
