  1. http://www.gastricsleevesupport.com/ This is another great resource for potential 'sleevers', and post-sleevers. The "good, the bad, and the ugly". Believe me, there have been some hideous outcomes of folks who have had the gastric sleeve done, and then have experienced horrendous outcomes, through no fault of their own. And despite following every guideline ... It is SERIOUS surgery. And needs to be treated, and respected as so. Please - just fork out the dosh, and book in and follow the guidelines of an experienced bariatric dietitian etc. It takes 10/52 for the stomach to heal, and even after that, late 'leaks' can happen. And other complications ... It is up to YOU , BEFORE you have "Weight Loss Surgery" ("WLS") to research, research, research. Read, read, read. There are numerous resources out there. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Remember "The Six P's"? I am not wishing to be crude here, but a good 'rule of thumb'/guideline is "Prior Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance". And from a SCUBA diving background - about 25 years ago - "Plan your dive, and dive to your plan". (I have the same username on this site- gastricsleevesupport.com "denzel"). You may also wish to look at my blog on this site, bandingtogether.com http://www.bandingtogether.com.au/community/profile/20941-denzel/ I can only re-emphasise the importance of working with your GP, bariatric surgeon, and bariatric-savvy dietitian. Any questions/queries, please contact them first. Instead of posting on sites such as this and asking for opinions. Your peers only just have this - opinions. This DOES not replace the guidelines and adbice of your . That is their area of speciality - not your faceless peers. And that YOU have to be accountable. You. Nobody else. Believe me, WLS is just a tool. If you don't use it wisely, then it will not work for you (so many posts about "I am a lapband/gastric sleeve/gastric by-pass failure".) And my personal experience. I HAVE to be diligent. Hour by hour. Day by day. Week by week etc. And, at the age of (turning 54) 53, I HAVE to follow a "Low-carb, healthy fat" diet (LCHF). Otherwise I just "blow-out". Many, many years ago - i.e around year 2000, I did that just that, No excuses for having your potentially-life threatening surgery done, and THEN ask "What should I be eating?" *sigh*. I just 'don't get it'. Why you haven't you already connected with a bariatric-savvy dietitian BEFORE having this operation done? .... And then you have read all the other resources out there? Totally frustrating. Us long-term sleevers answer queries such as this SO SO many times, then we get 'burnt out'. Don't have the emotional/physical/well-being to answer the same questions over...and over ...and over ... and over again etc. So, at the end of the day, YOU have to be accountable. I don't dish out platitudes - because, even though this may give that person instant gratification - What? - at the end of the day? - is best for them?, and what they are seeking advise about? Instant gratification? or genuine advice?. And it all boils down to head space. Those who (superficially, and nominally) seek - "advice" from their peers on forums such as these, rather than from experienced and qualified health professionals); unless they are willing to change head space/attitudes/beliefs - (and "In My Humble Opinion" " IMHO") - is that for those folk. please seek professional help, who specialise in eating behaviour disorders. Rather than need constant 'stroking' of their egos. Because in 1/5/10/15/20/ 20 + years, what is better for them? (in 'normal mental health'... , and if they have other mental health/personality problems, such as "borderline personality", it isn't us folk to try to work with this), it is their "health-care professionals". Please be careful, for all of us "helpers" out there, there are are a lot of folk out there with "borderline personalities". Just speaking from experience ... All the best!

    Prolapse / Hernia

Has anyone has a prolapse / hernia at their surgical site, right after being sleeved / banded? I'm 10 days pre op today. I developed a PROLAPSE on day 4. It was just fat (only) that's come through one of my surgical sites on my far right tummy. Its about the size of a tennis ball. No pain whatsoever, and I knew what it was, so I wasn't too worried (it wasn't warm, no oozing, no pain, I didn't feel sick). I didn't strain or lift anything that I'm aware of, I just woke up with it in the morning. Went back to the surgeon for my post op appointment on day 7, and he pushed it back in (wow, that was a weird feeling). He said that it happens sometimes as scars are healing, and it might still heal itself, or, if it develops into an actual hernia, it should be an easy fix. There's still a little lump (swollen?) and its a little sore from him and me prodding it and pushing it back in, but its fine. At the moment when I sneeze or cough, I have to press firmly against the site so it doesn't pop out again, while the scar is healing. I'm not too worried about it, but thought Id start a thread on it, as I haven't seen one here before. Just wondering if any one else has experienced a prolapse like this? did it heal itself or turn into a hernia that had to be fixed?
  3. I had my band removed last year due to multiple complications (I had it for 6 years), and now my 12 months on health insurance is up, and I'm due to book in a date for a sleeve.. but I'm really worried about doing it. With my band I had no hesitations at all, and wasn't scared of the surgery at all. But then, I didn't know as much then as I did now about weight loss surgeries, even with my family being in medicine! My mum died three months ago... as a result from infection from surgery to remove pancreatic cancer. Not so simple though - her previous weight loss surgeries went so wrong time after time for years on end, her stomach was a mess, and needed to be "rewired" in order for this new surgery (removal of pancreatic cancer) to be possible. This was a BIG surgery, and risk of death was high. We knew that before she went in, but there was no other choice. She was 60 yrs old. Had she not had the weight loss surgery (in her late 20's), her lifespan would have been considerably higher, she would have had a better quality of life without the illnesses brought on from it, and she probably would never have developed pancreatic cancer (gut surgeries, including band / sleeve etc, increase your chances of getting cancer, up to 20%. This increases with time after you've had the surgery. This has been fact for decades). She was very sick and frail most of her life due to the weight loss surgeries - she also developed the syndrome (name escapes me right now) that 80% of weight loss surgery patients develop - peritonitis, pulmonary embolism, severe vit D deficiency (so bad infusions don't work, let alone tablets), bruising, abdominal pain, shoulder pain, back pain, unexplained tachycardia, severe sleep disturbances, continuously tired, muscle weakness, all the symptoms of fibromyalgia, multiple endocrinology issues (like the bodies inability to produce enough cortisone, the implications of which most people don't even begin to understand), etc etc etc. (My mum is NOT an isolated case - she's the norm. 80% of patients develop varying levels of this after 2 years, and it increases with time, mainly in bypass patients, but it can also happen with sleeves, its caused by build up of bacteria in blind loop or staple lines). I know all this now because the coroner is investigating my mums death... there is no confusion on any of this, other than from the general public and some not so in the loop surgeons. its all been very official and factual. Im not worried about dying myself... but Im really worried about my two brothers, because we are all we have left. I'm worried about putting them through all that we went through with mum for those many years, or telling them in 5-10 years I have cancer too. Or Im worried about getting an infection from the surgery and dying then. They'd be beyond devastated. I don't have any weight related health complications (and most can be controlled without surgery anyway), not to say they wont develop in the future. I think wanting the surgery is a selfish thing. I want to be lighter and fit into clothes and look better and feel just a little more confident. But Im not sure if having that is worth the rest of it for my family. I see a lot of people here talking about 1 more kilo gone forever after their weight loss. That's a pure lie. Regardless of which surgery you have, you can still gain weight and be as heavy as you were before you started, if you don't diet and exercise forever. Let that sink in. Really. (my mum is a perfect example of that - and she had the most drastic surgery, gastric bypass. I also gained all my weight back with my band at times, even though I had complications that meant I couldn't swallow my own saliva, let alone food). Ignore the people who had their surgery less 5 years ago. All the issues and complications flood in at the 10 year point - and that time will fly. So, Im still thinking about booking my sleeve in. If I will or not. But just thought Id share that with you. There's a lot of things surgeons don't print in their pamphlets, and the fact is the negatives of WLS are creeping up and will probably over take the positives soon, as more extensive, large number, studies are released. People still don't understand that surgeons don't now or aren't aware of all this, that its to be expected that they dont, they are just the slice and dice people. They aren't endocrinologists, they aren't all specialists rolled into one. Staple line leaks and band slips are the least of your problems - they are rare and can be fixed if caught in time. The above is common, and cant be fixed. Im not against it at all (obviously, I'm still considering the sleeve), but just be sure you're not having the surgery for selfish reasons... because, potentially, its your family who will pay for it. The lack of knowledge on WLS complications and long term effects amaze me. Bottom line is, had I known then what I know now (in terms of long term permanent side affects / complications of surgery), I would NEVER have allowed someone I loved to do it.
  4. Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here! Having my op on the 4th of December @ the Alfred Hospital so i'm literally halfway through the optifast period. I'm only 26 but life is complicated so its not an easy operation. About my complications: I had a Nasty x-country skiing accident in late 2006, and did a lot of damage to one of my hips. I've had 5 operations on it and its now classed as grade 4 osteoarthritis and I live with chronic pain and nerve damage. And secondly, for an unknown reason 2 years ago - symptoms developed almost 3 years ago, I developed respiratory problems (laryngeal stenosis) for which since found have needed operations (just had #9 in prep for lap banding) every 12-16 weeks to re-open my airways. The most complicated part of the banding is my throat, as I can not be properly intubated. I was studying Phys Ed and outdoor education and was on a Uni camp when I had the accident, and while I tried to maintain living independently but eventually had to move back home and mum is my full time career now. Please feel free to ask me any questions you'd like...I'm pretty much an open book. I'm worried about how I'll deal with the severe hip pain and then post op pain too. Same with the liquids phase. I'm already a bit snappy which is out of character for me. Also It will be the end of week 3 on Christmas Day and I really like Christmas ham. At Christmas every year I eat some ham, then the rest of my plate is salads. This is a bigger deal than it should be :-( lol. Starting weight: 105.6

    Doctor just scared me!

This is my first post here. I start the Optifast Diet in four days. The GP who encouraged me to do this was extremely positive about it. She is now no longer my GP (long story) and I met my new GP today who....TRIED TO TALK ME OUT OF IT. She said she's got plenty of patients who have had it done and some have been fine but some have had terrible complications. I have gone from being OK with it to being terrified. I know that complications happen, but she made it sound like it's inevitable and extremely dangerous. Has anyone had complications and if so, how terrible were they?
