Hi, I am was is classified as "severley obese" which is beyond morbidly obese, with a BMI of 61. I saw my GP and was recommended to see a surgeon about the Lap Band surgery for weight loss. I finally met with the Surgeon today and he has told me that I should consider all my options and choose between lap band surgery or gastric bypass (he didn't go into sleeving, so i'm guessing he didn't think that to be a good option) I was all gun-ho for the band, but now the more I read about bypass I am wondering if it is better. I know a lot of people on here swear by their bands (it has definately helped alot of people, and congratulations to you all) but has anyone had the bypass surgery? Was anyone else given the same options and why did you choose what you chose?
Hi Everyone, I would like to know if any of you considered the sleeve and what was your decision - band or sleeve? I've been looking at some amazing videos on youtube about people who have had the sleeve. The no maintenance appeals to me and no having a foreign body inside me also. I was convinced I had decided on banding but now I am not so sure? When you see the surgeon do they discuss the different options with you or do they recommend which one would be best for you? I'm going to do some more research but I would be interested in your opinions on this topic. Thanks everyone!! Cookie
Having talked to many surgeons about common complaints patients talk of when feeling restricted; they often mention that patients fall out of that discipline of eating slowly. Different food types will make a huge difference, I appreciate that, but you need to take the same time between mouthfuls regardless of what you are eating. What happens is that the first (or earlier) mouthful hasn't squeezed through the band before the next one enters the pouch, and it puts pressure on the pouch and the cardiac sphincter (end of oesophagus). If you manage through this somehow, the pouch will start to expand and it only does this by pulling on the main stomach below and dragging it up to accommodate the more food you try to squeeze into the pouch, and you will start to plateau with your weight loss. I digress a bit, what i was asking here, if the band is supposedly at the right restriction, but it still feels tight when eating, how do you manage? And...do you have a set time period between mouthfuls, and if not, what do you do to slow down?
