    ADELAIDE BYPASS HELP

How is everyone. I realise this is a band Forum but it appears that other areas of this site are rather neglected I was hoping to meet more Adelaide ppl who have had surgeries recently... If anyone in this past few months have had any gastric surgery I'd like to know what surgery and surgeon and total out of pocket expense with PHI. It's been a few months since I looked into it so hoping for more recent costs and experiences. I'm still months away from my 12 month cut off before I qualify for surgery but getting keener every day. I think I've decided on the full RNY BYPASS as my best option for long term success but still unsure of who to go with I'm looking closely at Ashford but have recently heard of a new clinic of Dr DONOFRIO North Adelaide and I'm curious of anybody has any personal experience with Dr DONOFRIO?? But mostly costs of surgery and gaps and of course the surgeon in general are they open and inviting easy to deal with and do they offer free after care included in the surgery. Otherwise some one point me in the direction of the best FB pages for gastric bypass surgery in SA. Thanks again so looking forward to getting surgery this year!!!

  3. I had my band removed last year due to multiple complications (I had it for 6 years), and now my 12 months on health insurance is up, and I'm due to book in a date for a sleeve.. but I'm really worried about doing it. With my band I had no hesitations at all, and wasn't scared of the surgery at all. But then, I didn't know as much then as I did now about weight loss surgeries, even with my family being in medicine! My mum died three months ago... as a result from infection from surgery to remove pancreatic cancer. Not so simple though - her previous weight loss surgeries went so wrong time after time for years on end, her stomach was a mess, and needed to be "rewired" in order for this new surgery (removal of pancreatic cancer) to be possible. This was a BIG surgery, and risk of death was high. We knew that before she went in, but there was no other choice. She was 60 yrs old. Had she not had the weight loss surgery (in her late 20's), her lifespan would have been considerably higher, she would have had a better quality of life without the illnesses brought on from it, and she probably would never have developed pancreatic cancer (gut surgeries, including band / sleeve etc, increase your chances of getting cancer, up to 20%. This increases with time after you've had the surgery. This has been fact for decades). She was very sick and frail most of her life due to the weight loss surgeries - she also developed the syndrome (name escapes me right now) that 80% of weight loss surgery patients develop - peritonitis, pulmonary embolism, severe vit D deficiency (so bad infusions don't work, let alone tablets), bruising, abdominal pain, shoulder pain, back pain, unexplained tachycardia, severe sleep disturbances, continuously tired, muscle weakness, all the symptoms of fibromyalgia, multiple endocrinology issues (like the bodies inability to produce enough cortisone, the implications of which most people don't even begin to understand), etc etc etc. (My mum is NOT an isolated case - she's the norm. 80% of patients develop varying levels of this after 2 years, and it increases with time, mainly in bypass patients, but it can also happen with sleeves, its caused by build up of bacteria in blind loop or staple lines). I know all this now because the coroner is investigating my mums death... there is no confusion on any of this, other than from the general public and some not so in the loop surgeons. its all been very official and factual. Im not worried about dying myself... but Im really worried about my two brothers, because we are all we have left. I'm worried about putting them through all that we went through with mum for those many years, or telling them in 5-10 years I have cancer too. Or Im worried about getting an infection from the surgery and dying then. They'd be beyond devastated. I don't have any weight related health complications (and most can be controlled without surgery anyway), not to say they wont develop in the future. I think wanting the surgery is a selfish thing. I want to be lighter and fit into clothes and look better and feel just a little more confident. But Im not sure if having that is worth the rest of it for my family. I see a lot of people here talking about 1 more kilo gone forever after their weight loss. That's a pure lie. Regardless of which surgery you have, you can still gain weight and be as heavy as you were before you started, if you don't diet and exercise forever. Let that sink in. Really. (my mum is a perfect example of that - and she had the most drastic surgery, gastric bypass. I also gained all my weight back with my band at times, even though I had complications that meant I couldn't swallow my own saliva, let alone food). Ignore the people who had their surgery less 5 years ago. All the issues and complications flood in at the 10 year point - and that time will fly. So, Im still thinking about booking my sleeve in. If I will or not. But just thought Id share that with you. There's a lot of things surgeons don't print in their pamphlets, and the fact is the negatives of WLS are creeping up and will probably over take the positives soon, as more extensive, large number, studies are released. People still don't understand that surgeons don't now or aren't aware of all this, that its to be expected that they dont, they are just the slice and dice people. They aren't endocrinologists, they aren't all specialists rolled into one. Staple line leaks and band slips are the least of your problems - they are rare and can be fixed if caught in time. The above is common, and cant be fixed. Im not against it at all (obviously, I'm still considering the sleeve), but just be sure you're not having the surgery for selfish reasons... because, potentially, its your family who will pay for it. The lack of knowledge on WLS complications and long term effects amaze me. Bottom line is, had I known then what I know now (in terms of long term permanent side affects / complications of surgery), I would NEVER have allowed someone I loved to do it.
  4. Hi there, I'm a newbie to this site but not a newbie to banding. I am wondering if anyone knows of a good surgeon who does both the sleeve procedure and also the gastric bypass. I must make a decision but not be restricted by a surgeon that does only one or the other. I live in Penrith - someone not to far away would be great. Cheerio, SuperNanna
  5. G'day all i am just wondering are there any other people out there that have had the lapband and then had to have it removed due to slippage or some other problem and then went on to get the gastric bypass, would love to know what you think of the two and what you found was better the lapband or bypass? i personally got the lapband in 2008 was 130kg got down to 110kg at my lowest weight then got pregnant and after i had my child i found i had lots of problems with my band and having blockages the band ended up slipping in june 2011 and i had to have it removed my weight has slowly snuck back up to 130kg and i am now looking at getting gastric bypass surgery as my surgen recommended it to me. so yer would really love to hear from people who have experienced both opperations

    Post-Op Update

Well it is now 17 days since the operation. There have been ups and downs but hopefully things will get better. I came out of hospital on Day 4, having been told my hospital stay would be 5-7 days but I was doing so well and taking enough fluids that I could go home. I still had a fair bit of pain on my left side where the major incision was and where there were stiches to reconnect muscles together not just skin. (The surgery was done laparoscopically with six incisions including the drainage hole) This means I have to lay on my right side and be very careful when rolling as I get shooting pain on my left. The fluid diet was in place until the end of week 1, when I was able to start on puréed food. The good thing was that I had lost a stone (about 7-8kg) in weight from my pre-optifast weight by the end of this first week. However after 1 day on puréed food, I was in incredible pain and after a call to the surgeon, hubby rushed me to the emergency of Knox Private. The put me on some morphine to dull the pain and sent me off for a ct scan, unfortunately in trying to get from the trolley bed to the ct scan platform I hurt my left side incision, which even the morphine didn't dull. After the scan I then had to get back onto the trolley bed. The tried to roll me but (obviously not knowing the pain that would cause me). The noise I emitted was loud enough for my husband to come running. I'm sure they heard me in the next suburb! Fortunately hubby was allowed to help and managed to get me up without me rolling and hurting myself more. The outcome of the ct scan was that I had a bowel obstruction at the point where the bypass tube enters the upper intestine. Apparently maximum inflammation occurs between day 7-10 post-op so there was not enough room for puréed food to pass, hence the obstruction. (My comment on this is perhaps it would be advisable for patients to stay on fluids until day 10 rather than day 7!) They admitted me to hospital and put me on fluids and hydrocortisone to relieve the inflammation for 3 days until the obstruction had passed. I came home and found out I had put on half a stone! (From the hydrocortisone I guess). I was also back on fluids for another couple of days. I restarted on puréed foods 3 days after leaving hospital for the second time (day 13 post-op). Since then I have had no problems with food and when I saw the dietician she said I could go onto solids...ie edible food rather they purée mush! Yay. I was very happy. Also eating real food means I can eat some prunes to help with no 2s as I really dislike Actlax that I was taking before. However, not all was good. My left side was healing nicely and was much less painful, until yesterday when the pain came back. I'm not sure why, maybe I have pulled something, maybe I bent over to pick something up. Anyway what it means I am again having to hold my side when I stand up and be very careful what I do. (This is a word of warning to everyone else: be very careful what you do, no lifting anything and be careful about bending over) I have also found my back is a bit sore because I struggle to stand straight and am a bit hunched over because of the pain in my left side. I am now onto Day 17 and am really pleased that I have now lost 1.5 stone (about 11kgs) and more importantly my blood sugar levels are between 4.9 and 7.8 without any medication!
  9. Hi Does anybody know of an Australian Gastric Bypass Forum? I'm keen to hear about others journeys. Thanks Edward

  11. Hi, I am was is classified as "severley obese" which is beyond morbidly obese, with a BMI of 61. I saw my GP and was recommended to see a surgeon about the Lap Band surgery for weight loss. I finally met with the Surgeon today and he has told me that I should consider all my options and choose between lap band surgery or gastric bypass (he didn't go into sleeving, so i'm guessing he didn't think that to be a good option) I was all gun-ho for the band, but now the more I read about bypass I am wondering if it is better. I know a lot of people on here swear by their bands (it has definately helped alot of people, and congratulations to you all) but has anyone had the bypass surgery? Was anyone else given the same options and why did you choose what you chose?
