    Accountability

I was sleeved 23 months ago (i.e. nearly two years ago). Admittedly, I was very sick last year with a gut infection (Campylobacter), and dropped down to a BMI of 18.5, and 18% body fat. O.K; so here I am going to be honest and accountable. Since that gut infection has been treated, my weight has gradually increased ... particularly in the last couple of months... Yes. Alcohol. Low-carb beer ... Gin and diet tonic (so helpful for getting me through doing housework!!). I, probably like most folk, have had some carb-binges over the last month. A couple of days of eating nothing but "Grainwave" chips ... And an outstanding 2.25 kg of (Chinese) dumplings in the last two days. I have had horrendous health/energy problems last year, and haven't been active (chronic ME/CFIDS + Fibromyalgia etc. and I had really deteriorated health-wise) But this last week there has been an improvement. Today I "sucked it up" and weighed myself (after going to the loo, on an empty stomach etc). I have managed (!) to put on 3.13 kg in less than four weeks. Body fat increase of 3.6% ... And I can feel it. My arms feel like sausages bursting out of their skins, and my thighs are rubbing. My boobs are bursting out of my bra. I have jumped up a couple of clothing sizes. I had got down to a size 4/6 (I am only 5" tall - about 153 cm), and am now busting out of size 8. So. This is it. I have started this new thread, called "Accountability". 1. I am going to be more diligent to weigh myself more frequently. 2. Bye-bye low carb beer. 3. Move more. 4. Update my details and progress.5. Get to see dentist to have sensitive teeth treated ... this has been preventing me from "20, 20, 20". Numerologically, for me this is a "power year". So it is up to me to make the most of it.

    July 2018 Sleevers

Hi just wondering if there is anyone scheduled for July ? I'm booked for the 30th July.
  3. Hey Everyone, hope everyone is doing well. I'm just after some info on waiting times for public patients for the gastric sleeve, I'm going through Paul Burton. It's been 9-10 months since my referral was sent off they rang me within a week and I have a meeting with him this week. I had my pre op assessment blood tests done. Does the "waiting list" time start from when referral was received or after I meet with him? Any info would be muchly appreciated. Thankyou

  6. I’ve been having a google and couldn’t find anything informative so I thought I’d see if anyone has the same experience... I had my surgery in late December 2017 and have been doing well- lost about 25kg. I did not have any complications and actually benefitted more than the obvious as my lactose intolerance has disappeared and the surgeon discovered symptoms of an undiagnosed auto immune disease in my stomach during the operation. The only real negative I have noticed is that I throw up very easily/ unintentionally make myself throw up. It’s not like when I’ve eaten to much or drink to soon after eating, there is no nausea involved nor any discomfort. But essentially I swallow in a funny way and bring up the food I’ve just eaten. I don’t do this intentionally, and it’s more of a annoyance than anything as I just all of a sudden bring up my food after swallowing. I hope this makes sense- we get this surgery to lose weight in a healthy manner and I really don’t want to end up losing weight to quickly or end up not getting ing enough nutrients as I am throwing up to much. Has anyone else experienced this?
  7. Hi. I'd like to create this topic as an area where long-term (2 1/2+ years) post-op gastric sleeve folk can come along to to update where they are at, and for support. I am about 3/12 shy of 3 years post sleeve gastrectomy and am seeking others such as me. I found that the first two years, the first in particular, was unicorns farting glitter. Everything was all good, and I found the gastricsleevesupport site good. Unfortunately it closed down a while back. Lately I have been feeling 'out on a limb', without having anyone I can ask questions of, seek similar experiences and relate to. I have a lovely "sleeve-sista" - someone I met who was sleeved 10/7 before me, but she has had problems with severe reflux, no appetite, and losing too much weight. Lots of support goes out to the 'newbies", but us long-termers don't get any. Along with a number of us long-termers continuing to put the effort etc into supporting the newbies, but not getting it back. But, I am now finding it harder and harder to maintain my weight, or to lose. And I admit that the last month has been bad on my behalf. I have been making LCHF sweeties, and instead of eating just one bit, have been eating lots. = heaps of calories. And the scales and my clothes are showing it. I have been extra fatigued after having severe gastroenteritis about 8 weeks ago, and have been diagnosed as being iron-deficient. Now on supplemental iron, and for repeat blood tests. I know that life does go on for folks post sleeve-gastrectomy, as it did for me and people get caught up in their own lives. Some folks 'drop' out due to embarrassment - either they didn't lose much weight to start off with, or they lost it and gained it. So, I would appreciate other long-term sleevers, to get back in touch, and update - the good, bad and the ugly. All the best,

    Operation this week

Hello, I am having a gastric sleeve operation this thursday and just starting to get nervous. Would love to hear from anyone who has had the operation and how it all went or is going, success stories and any advice. Thanks xx
  9. Just for interest, I am wondering if folk who have been sleeved in the last 1+/- year have had a Minimizer Ring/Band applied? Feedback via Surgeon? (+/-)? And those who about to be sleeved? Just looking for trends in recent times re Surgeons' preferences. Short term outcomes (< 1 year), long term outcomes (> 2 years). And feedback from everyone/anyone who has/hasn't had a Minimiser Band placed., Thanks.
  10. I am new to this forum and I am waiting for my health cover to mature in Dec 2017 than I am able to have the gastric sleeve. I want to know about any experiences with Dr Darrin Goodall-Wilson out of St John of God Geelong. I have found him today via another fb page and he is highly recommended. I am wanting to know out of expenses cost, waiting times ect and if you pay just that or pay all the fees and get reimbursed. This could change who I go and see as I am booked into see a Dr in Melbourne and his out of pocket expenses where around $6000. I will be traveling around 4 hours. Any advice would help, thank you.
  11. http://www.gastricsleevesupport.com/ This is another great resource for potential 'sleevers', and post-sleevers. The "good, the bad, and the ugly". Believe me, there have been some hideous outcomes of folks who have had the gastric sleeve done, and then have experienced horrendous outcomes, through no fault of their own. And despite following every guideline ... It is SERIOUS surgery. And needs to be treated, and respected as so. Please - just fork out the dosh, and book in and follow the guidelines of an experienced bariatric dietitian etc. It takes 10/52 for the stomach to heal, and even after that, late 'leaks' can happen. And other complications ... It is up to YOU , BEFORE you have "Weight Loss Surgery" ("WLS") to research, research, research. Read, read, read. There are numerous resources out there. Prepare, prepare, prepare. Remember "The Six P's"? I am not wishing to be crude here, but a good 'rule of thumb'/guideline is "Prior Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance". And from a SCUBA diving background - about 25 years ago - "Plan your dive, and dive to your plan". (I have the same username on this site- gastricsleevesupport.com "denzel"). You may also wish to look at my blog on this site, bandingtogether.com http://www.bandingtogether.com.au/community/profile/20941-denzel/ I can only re-emphasise the importance of working with your GP, bariatric surgeon, and bariatric-savvy dietitian. Any questions/queries, please contact them first. Instead of posting on sites such as this and asking for opinions. Your peers only just have this - opinions. This DOES not replace the guidelines and adbice of your . That is their area of speciality - not your faceless peers. And that YOU have to be accountable. You. Nobody else. Believe me, WLS is just a tool. If you don't use it wisely, then it will not work for you (so many posts about "I am a lapband/gastric sleeve/gastric by-pass failure".) And my personal experience. I HAVE to be diligent. Hour by hour. Day by day. Week by week etc. And, at the age of (turning 54) 53, I HAVE to follow a "Low-carb, healthy fat" diet (LCHF). Otherwise I just "blow-out". Many, many years ago - i.e around year 2000, I did that just that, No excuses for having your potentially-life threatening surgery done, and THEN ask "What should I be eating?" *sigh*. I just 'don't get it'. Why you haven't you already connected with a bariatric-savvy dietitian BEFORE having this operation done? .... And then you have read all the other resources out there? Totally frustrating. Us long-term sleevers answer queries such as this SO SO many times, then we get 'burnt out'. Don't have the emotional/physical/well-being to answer the same questions over...and over ...and over ... and over again etc. So, at the end of the day, YOU have to be accountable. I don't dish out platitudes - because, even though this may give that person instant gratification - What? - at the end of the day? - is best for them?, and what they are seeking advise about? Instant gratification? or genuine advice?. And it all boils down to head space. Those who (superficially, and nominally) seek - "advice" from their peers on forums such as these, rather than from experienced and qualified health professionals); unless they are willing to change head space/attitudes/beliefs - (and "In My Humble Opinion" " IMHO") - is that for those folk. please seek professional help, who specialise in eating behaviour disorders. Rather than need constant 'stroking' of their egos. Because in 1/5/10/15/20/ 20 + years, what is better for them? (in 'normal mental health'... , and if they have other mental health/personality problems, such as "borderline personality", it isn't us folk to try to work with this), it is their "health-care professionals". Please be careful, for all of us "helpers" out there, there are are a lot of folk out there with "borderline personalities". Just speaking from experience ... All the best!

    12 month pre op diet...

Hi everyone, my doctor has just referred me to the gastric sleeve specialist to start my journey towards my op. I see that the 12 month supervised weight loss program is a mandatory WA Department of Health requirement. I previously spent 3 years under the supervision of dieticians that my doctor had sent me too. I followed the program to the letter and lost a significant amount of weight, but being a lifelong yoyo dieter, stacked it all and more back on once the program was finished. I'm extremely motivated when it comes to following diet instructions, but always end up blowing it when it comes to maintenance, and stack the weight plus more back on. My question is, as my doctor has the records of my weight loss under a dietician, would this count towards the 12 month pre op diet requirement (could the 12 months be shortened) I have no problem going on the diet, and I understand losing 10% of my current weight pre op is required for a safer operation. Its just 12 months seems like a huge amount of time to have to be on it before the op will be allowed. I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question. This is all exciting and new to me, and of course I'm chomping at the bit to begin this new uplifting chapter in my life.

13 Oct is the big day

After years of thinking about weight loss, struggling with health issues in additional to gradual weigh gain - I've booked in for gastric sleeve with Dr Victor Leiw this week. Part of the reassurance that this is what I need has been the online stories people have shared, as well meeting/knowing a dozen others in the last 12mths whom have had positive outcomes from being sleeved. Two months ago I was 183k, after several weeks on pre-op I'm 170k. Let's see what the future brings... Wish me luck.

    March 2016 Gastric Sleeve

Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and hoping to find friendship and support with others who are on and been through the same journey. I'm currently on the Optifast regime and I'm scheduled to have my gastric sleeve on 23/03/2016 (10 days) in Newcastle NSW Australia. I guess from reading, I'm going through all the same feelings and emotions that everyone else has been through, SCARED about not knowing how I will feel immediately after the operation and how I will cope in the weeks and months to come, BUT I'm also EXCITED about the possibility of a new healthy me. I've been obese for so long and tried so many diets and always regained my weight back again, each time that little more depressed and disappointed with myself - a spiralling vicious cycle. I just can't imagine what it will feel like to be a normal weight and the possibility of actually loosing weight this time and being able to maintain the weight loss sounds like a miracle. If anyone has any tips or encouragement to help with the next 10 days before surgery I would love to hear from you
  16. Hi folks, I am in stinking hot Perth, and due to having a huge fire fuel load on my urban property - leaves, bark and twigs from a large non-local Eucalypt - have had to get out in the yard and get on and deal with it (raking, bagging etc). Doing this in the mornings, but sometimes have had to go into the afternoon. I try to work in the shaded areas, but we have still got to 44c in the shade here. I've been doing this in the mornings, but sometimes have had to go into the afternoon. (Due to my thermoregulatory problems, I am just wearing shoes, socks, bra, knickers; and use "cool towel", neck cooling scarves, wiping myself down with a wet flannel, sticking my head under the cool tap etc. And drinking heaps, also drinking chilled no added sugar coconut water - this is gorgeous!) I have noticed that my appetite has totally gone during the morning and into the afternoon, and doesn't come back until later in the afternoon/evening. Also, if I do try to eat during the day I can only manage a couple of mouthfuls. I am 12 months post op. Anyone else experience this?

To catch you up: My house did not sell.Mum (in NZ) had to put the unit that she had bought on my behalf (in Orewa) , on the market (obviously, due to financial reasons). https://www.barfoot.co.nz/533537 Mum, and my sister Pam) put a lot of effort into this place, and it had remodelled kitchen, bathroom, repainted, new carpets etc etc etc.Yes, it looked wonderful.Yes, the Orewa lifestyle would have been magnificent. That unit sold. Current Medication: Before Breakfast: 2 paracetamol/2 Panadol Osteo (depending on what day I have ahead of me...) for... your choice...: ME/CFS, Fibromyalgia, Osteo arthritis hips etc ...I can't stand...feel horrendous, have muscle pain, and "post-exertional malaise" (believe me, that sends you straight to bed) lasting into the next couple of days...50 mg Lyrica (Fibroymyalgia)Duloxetine 60 mg (Fibromyalgia/ME/CFS - works wonderfully!) This was recommended to me by my ENT - Paul Yuen - surgeon in relation to the Menieres Disease...). Benefit - now I am back on it, I have noticed...that my poxy memory has started to improve again. I am still here (24 Ward Cres, Kelmscott WA 6111).And the unit in Orewa would never had been 'mine' . Mum (turning 85 this coming March!!!) and my sister, had put too much work into it. "Entitling" them to call it "Theirs" and ...dictating... what I could do, and what I couldn't do. "Things happen for a reason". My life is no longer "on hold", as it was from January 2015.Spiritually, I got given, "The timing wasn't right".I have "Moved On" in many ways.I have "Taken The Leap Of Faith".Gone on with 'plans'. 20. I posted awhile ago now about making the decision to go from a band to a sleeve. I only had the band placed at the beginning of May, but I am so ready to have it out. When it was working well it felt too tight and even with the tiniest amount out I am hungry all the time. I don't feel I made the right choice. I am so pro weight loss surgery though. I know most people feel as though a bypass is extreme and everyone says don't do it but honestly if I could that is what I want. But my surgeon is going to do the sleeve for me. I am getting the band out 18th Nov, so only a couple of weeks to go. I am really hoping that I have more success with the sleeve - I am really looking forward to eating certain things again - mostly healthy things too. I am absolutely shit scared about the time in between band removal and the sleeve surgery which I am going to push for early Feb. I had lost 18kg (93kg) but I seem to be bouncing back up as I am at 96kg now (15kg lost). And I haven't even had the band removed yet! My whole health at the moment has been really shit. I have basically stopped exercising and have been eating a lot of shit foods (why is it so easy to eat junk?!). So I know exactly why I have put weight back on. It's like I can even get the motivation to try at the moment. I keep trying to work myself up to it but I haven't succeeded, yet! However, I have recurrent major depression and that has been spiraling the last month or so...I know the impact that has...but I keep trying to push through, and the psychiatrist and I are swapping and adding different medications so we will get there eventually. I remain hopeful, and I probably depend to much on the idea that weight loss surgery is going to be it for me. But inside I know that it is a tool to utilise and you only get out what you put in. As the sleeve surgery gets closer I will need to get as much support as I can to make the most of this opportunity. It works if you work it.

    19 days and counting!

My weight has been a self fulfilling prophesy. Since I was a teenager, with protruding hips and collar bones, I was convinced I was overweight. Determined to wear that bikini, but hideously embarrassed about my body. Everybody, and I mean everybody was, in my mind, skinnier, prettier, smaller, better.... In my mid 20s entering my weight on a form as 64kg (I'm 165cm) I was overwhelmed by the shame of obesity. When I got married 20 years ago I weighed about 75kg and the dressmaker continuously referred to me as one of her 'bigger brides'. In my head all I heard was the message that I was fat. If I could only turn back the clock and give myself a good slap!! Even as I face gastric sleeve surgery I doubt I'll see that unappreciated and much maligned 64kg mark again. I'll be happy with the wedding weight 75! So.... Now I'm 53 years old, mother of 3 teenagers and a miserable, unhealthy, life stifling 110kg. I have type 2 diabetes, which is managed but terrifying. My 'netball knees' are suffering under the weight and I'm stuck in the cycle of needing to exercise but being too unfit, tired and miserable to be able to motivate myself. You name a diet I've tried it! 5:2, Atkins, soup, Weight watchers, Jenny Craig, Dukan, Impromy (the best of the lot) ....... the list is so long. I've had some success along the way only to find them unsustainable and I so easily slip back into old habits and the weight creeps back like some insidious cloak of shame and failure. My GP has been suggesting surgery for a few years now, I didn't really take it seriously. The cost for a start, even with private health insurance, was a major factor. Three kids were the priority and I felt selfish even thinking of spending thousands on my lack of self control. At my local weigh watchers group the leader spoke with disdain of those who chose surgery over 'grit and determination'. She spent many meetings telling us of the horrendous side effects and the damaged caused to the body from this unnatural practice. She looked suspiciously at new members that lost "too much" weight and speculated on their surgical status. She'll be mortified at my impending defection to the 'dark side'!! (....and secretly I can't wait to run into her in six months time!!) With my health getting progressively worse, no energy, headaches etc, I've found myself withdrawing from life. I don't want to meet friends, go to work functions, meet new people, I don't want to go out with family....I'm just too tired. And fat. This, my friends, is not healthy mentally or physically. I don't want to miss out. I want to participate, actively, in my family's life. Now finances are more flexible I've decided to take the plunge, much to the delight of my GP and the horror of my husband. He's a born worrier so I expected nothing less.... but he's supportive. I meet with the surgeon and in what seems like a bit of a whirlwind, my surgery is booked for Monday the 16th of November. Day one of my second chance. So, so, so excited!
  22. Hello fellow bandits, I have a BMI of 31, wondering if anyone has does gastric with a 31 BMI? Which type of procedure did you end up with and whats the weight loss like? I have an interest in a new process called a Banded Gastric Plication. It basically involves folding the stomach in half inwards to the left and stitching it. Also without the complications of the Bypass/ sleeve and its completely reversible It seems that you cant find much about Plication in Australia. Any recommendations on this Plication and any good doctors to recommend in Sydney? Basically im asking if anyone has had this/ heard of it? and just wanted to know fellow bandits response Basically im asking if anyone has had this/ heard of it? I

Going from a lap band to a sleeve

Hi everyone! My name is Leigh, I'm 33, live in Sydney (originally from good ol' Brissy!) and I have been searching around for a lap band/sleeve forum so I'm glad I found one. I got my lap band back in December 2006 when I weighed 150kgs and was only 24yrs old. I worked in health insurance at the time and had done my homework extensively however there was a lack of support, no FB groups or forums to talk with other patients. I knew I wanted something that was reversible though. I lost about 17kgs initially and was pleased with how I was managing things. I flatlined with my weight loss (lack of exercise, no band tightening, lack of motivation) at about the 130-135kg mark and that is where I stayed for several years. Then about 4 years ago, I started a new job where they had just started a weight loss challenge. I'm competitive with a lot of things, but weight loss has never been one of them. I got on board though, and with several band tightenings, I smashed through 20kgs in 3 months (won the challenge!!), and then continued to lose after that. I got down to 104kgs and was feeling fabulous! Not long after I was made redundant and changed jobs which was extremely stressful as my partner had just quit his job to study while I supported the both of us. During the previous 2 or so years I had extremely bad reflux and was coughing excessively at night that I could never sleep and would throw up saliva constantly. During the day I was fine and wouldn't throw up food as I have always known my limit and have lived with my lap band for years. Underlining all of that I was severely anaemic, unaware to me. So out of sheer frustration with my surgeon not helping me, I got a referral to another surgeon. He told me my band should have never been as tight as it was, which was causing the reflux and the coughing and he released it. Overnight, I slept! It was a miracle. The motivation was still there to lose weight however with a stressful job change, I put on a few kgs, and my mindset went from being motivated to feeling defeated. In the last 2 years I have put on all of the weight I had lost and I got up to 152.5kgs. When I was 104kgs, I had thrown out all of my fat clothes because I was never going back to that, but as I put weight on, I had to buy clothes again. I have about 6 massive bags of 'skinny' clothes just waiting to be worn again. So, a bit over 12 months ago I increased my health insurance and booked in to get the gastric sleeve done. With preparation for my surgery I have lost 3.9kgs in the last week (I can feel that old motivation coming back again!). I'm scheduled to have my lap band removed on the 24th September (next week!) and get the gastric sleeve on the 23rd November. I've had several acquaintances, an old neighbour and old colleagues also get the sleeve and while watching them as my guinea pigs, my test subjects, lol, that this is the right decision for me. I'm not nervous, or anxious, since I've gone through the surgery before, I just want it to hurry up! I look forward to sharing my journey with you all and learning some things from you too! Below are some photos from my journey over these years. I will start my photo tracking again just before I go into surgery next week. This was the tracking I did during my weight loss challenge at my old job. I could tell my moles on my stomach were getting closer, you could see my ears better and my stomach was rising very quickly! These shorts are a size 26. Sadly, I am sitting in them right now as I type this, and they are fitting me very well. I loved using these shorts as an indicator of my weight loss. And you can see the fat clothes I was putting in bags to give to charity! I miss doing fun runs (walks!), million paws walk etc because of my weight gain. So as a motivator I have pulled out the calendar for the next 12 months and marked all the events I would like to attend. Here I am at my lightest at 104kgs, with a bulky jacket on lol...AND I was fitting into skinny jeans. This is my motivation photo!
  24. Hi All! I'm from Adelaide about trying to decide to go with either Dr Bessel or Dr Teague. After a disastrous visit with a doctor who will remain nameless who totally destroyed me, I booked two appointments with both offices. I thought it would be pretty straight forward and easy to choose. Dr Bessel: Loved the staff, easy to get to, Dr Helen was wonderful! But the amount of pre-appointments seems daunting (and expensive) and I'm still not 100% sure how much it will all cost on for the gastric sleeve. Has anyone had one done through Dr Bessel? I seemed to get the impression that it's a new thing for them. I was all set to get bypass but after some research I think the sleeve is a much better option when it comes to risk. Did others find the pre and after care beneficial (i.e. the psych, the exercise physio, the dietician, etc?) Dr Teague: So far I've only seen the initial consult doctor and...I was less than impressed. Not that he wasn't thorough, he just seemed to be going through the motions and seemed annoyed when i asked questions. The only reason I was thinking Ashford is that it bulk bills and I only have to go to the two pre-op appointments. Again, I tried to find out the total cost which seems to be $3500 for the sleeve? I'm also under the impression that they've done quite a few of them already. I'm with HCF top cover and it ticked over in January. I called them and they said everything was covered and to call medicare to find out the rebate. The guy at Medicare had no idea what I was talking about with the code they give you and said I could get a rebate of $657, but on the sheet it says you can't get a rebate. I'm really hoping someone has some tips or info they can help me out with because I have my first meeting with Dr Bessel's rooms this Friday coming, and if I decide to go with Ashford I need to cancel. I don't want to make this decision just based on cost. Sorry for the rambling message, it's really late and I should be getting zzzs but this is stressing me out! Thank you in advance to anyone who can offer help :-)
