  1. Hi, I'm new here! According to my BMI I've been overweight for a long time and while a lot of that is just due to my curvy body type and having a slow metabolism, I also think I've developed an unhealthy relationship with food and eating - I Have a huge appetite and eat far too much, and it takes so much food for me to feel full. I love food and obsess over it. I've tried everything I can think of and I just can't lose weight to get to a healthy weight range and especially since I've started working full time, it's very hard to do enough exercise for someone like me who needs a lot of exercise to avoid putting on weight. I go through months of trying something and giving up because nothing ever changes. I did a whole year trying to diet and seeing a personal trainer twice a week and didn't lose a single kilo. I've seen so much success with lap band and feel this would turn my life around however im not sure what the minimum requirements are for eligibility. I've read you need a BMI of 40, I've also read you can have a BMI of 35 if you have related health issues and then at other places you just need a BMI of 30 with, it seems, no other health issues. I have a BMI of 30 with relatively high cholesterol but that's about it, so many people will see that as being not enough for eligibility and I totally get that, but my weight has been creeping up and up I assume as I get older (I mean I'm only 26 but your metabolism starts slowing down even more from your 20s) and I fear I'm just going to keep stacking on the weight no matter what I do. Any suggestions? I don't have PHI so would join ASAP to do it next year but I don't want to join and pay all that money if I'm not going to be eligible. Thank you so much.
  2. Hi everyone! first time poster, sorry if I've made any mistakes. Ive recently seen a surgeon and he has recommended lap band surgery, the problem is I cannot afford it through him specifically! I don't want to have to go see every surgeon I can find without knowing first how much a self funded with basic hospital cover is first! Please if anyone could tell me their suregeon and how much it cost them self funded that would be excellent! I am also going to be put into the public wait list shortly but would much prefer to self fund to get banded ASAP! I am currently 180cm tall and weigh 115kg and have been advised against sleeving but that does not mean that if another surgeon suggested it I wouldn't get it, Thankyou so much everyone edit: forgot to mention I'm living in Victoria/Melbourne

Band to Sleeve, what to do?

Hi Everyone I joined Banding Together a few months back and made my initial post here for those of you who want to read the background to my story. I've been beating around the bush on what to do with myself for a while now and what finally pushed me to go and see my surgeon again (Dr Roy Brancatisano) was when I went to donate blood last month and was rejected because I was too heavy for the seat they use . I was 176 KG when they weighed me in the mobile donor truck which shocked me as I was 148 KG 12 months earlier. I made some immediate changes to my behaviors and stopped snacking on biscuits and other garbage in the office and have got this down to 169 KG without any exercise. I know I can get it under 150 KG again with some reasonable effort. I had my first consultation in 12 years with Dr Brancatisano today and told him my story. He straight out told me the band had to removed and that he would be happy to perform a sleeve gastrectomy if I felt I was able to commit to making the changes needed in my lifestyle. My biggest enemies are carbohydrates, chocolate and inactivity, all of which will still be real threats to my progress even if I do get a sleeve. I was only 18 when the band was put in and I feel I was immature and didn't take it seriously enough. I am 31 now and can now see how serious my weight is to my health and life span. The barriers to me moving forward with the sleeve are as follows: I doubt my ability to remain motivated and refrain from eating evil foods (carbs & chocolate)I have never enjoyed exercise and doubt my ability to commit to regular physical activity with my job and fast paced lifestyleI am anxious about ending up in a worse position that I am in now with the negative side effects of my lap band.Any encouragement or perspectives you can all give me would be appreciated SC

Going from a lap band to a sleeve

Hi everyone! My name is Leigh, I'm 33, live in Sydney (originally from good ol' Brissy!) and I have been searching around for a lap band/sleeve forum so I'm glad I found one. I got my lap band back in December 2006 when I weighed 150kgs and was only 24yrs old. I worked in health insurance at the time and had done my homework extensively however there was a lack of support, no FB groups or forums to talk with other patients. I knew I wanted something that was reversible though. I lost about 17kgs initially and was pleased with how I was managing things. I flatlined with my weight loss (lack of exercise, no band tightening, lack of motivation) at about the 130-135kg mark and that is where I stayed for several years. Then about 4 years ago, I started a new job where they had just started a weight loss challenge. I'm competitive with a lot of things, but weight loss has never been one of them. I got on board though, and with several band tightenings, I smashed through 20kgs in 3 months (won the challenge!!), and then continued to lose after that. I got down to 104kgs and was feeling fabulous! Not long after I was made redundant and changed jobs which was extremely stressful as my partner had just quit his job to study while I supported the both of us. During the previous 2 or so years I had extremely bad reflux and was coughing excessively at night that I could never sleep and would throw up saliva constantly. During the day I was fine and wouldn't throw up food as I have always known my limit and have lived with my lap band for years. Underlining all of that I was severely anaemic, unaware to me. So out of sheer frustration with my surgeon not helping me, I got a referral to another surgeon. He told me my band should have never been as tight as it was, which was causing the reflux and the coughing and he released it. Overnight, I slept! It was a miracle. The motivation was still there to lose weight however with a stressful job change, I put on a few kgs, and my mindset went from being motivated to feeling defeated. In the last 2 years I have put on all of the weight I had lost and I got up to 152.5kgs. When I was 104kgs, I had thrown out all of my fat clothes because I was never going back to that, but as I put weight on, I had to buy clothes again. I have about 6 massive bags of 'skinny' clothes just waiting to be worn again. So, a bit over 12 months ago I increased my health insurance and booked in to get the gastric sleeve done. With preparation for my surgery I have lost 3.9kgs in the last week (I can feel that old motivation coming back again!). I'm scheduled to have my lap band removed on the 24th September (next week!) and get the gastric sleeve on the 23rd November. I've had several acquaintances, an old neighbour and old colleagues also get the sleeve and while watching them as my guinea pigs, my test subjects, lol, that this is the right decision for me. I'm not nervous, or anxious, since I've gone through the surgery before, I just want it to hurry up! I look forward to sharing my journey with you all and learning some things from you too! Below are some photos from my journey over these years. I will start my photo tracking again just before I go into surgery next week. This was the tracking I did during my weight loss challenge at my old job. I could tell my moles on my stomach were getting closer, you could see my ears better and my stomach was rising very quickly! These shorts are a size 26. Sadly, I am sitting in them right now as I type this, and they are fitting me very well. I loved using these shorts as an indicator of my weight loss. And you can see the fat clothes I was putting in bags to give to charity! I miss doing fun runs (walks!), million paws walk etc because of my weight gain. So as a motivator I have pulled out the calendar for the next 12 months and marked all the events I would like to attend. Here I am at my lightest at 104kgs, with a bulky jacket on lol...AND I was fitting into skinny jeans. This is my motivation photo!
  5. Hi, I am looking into having lapband surgery and have spoken to my health fund who said that I would be covered with a private doctor in a public hospital, has anyone been in this situation? Can anyone recommend a doctor in Melbourne who does the surgery in a public hospital but as a private patient? Thanks heaps Jo

    Banded 3 days ago

Hi everyone, i have been reading these forums in preparation of my surgery 3 days ago. It has been wonderful to read real people's opinions and responses to the concerns I had. 3 days on and I'm feeling really positive. A lot of pain first couple of days and I started to stress about every pain and issue. Today I even managed to lay on my side and sit up without too much pain. cant wait to really start exercising properly and getting my new lifestyle happening!! thank you all for your wise words.. They have meant a lot for me to read anonymously!
  7. And part II of my story, covering how I went about losing the weight, my experiences and achievements, is now online: http://www.dailysabah.com/features/2015/01/15/a-life-changing-transformation-was-149-kilograms-now-65
  8. Hi all, I'm new here - 2.5 weeks post op (lap band) and my port (positioned left of belly button) is sticking out. Quite obvious. Saw Dr who said might have hematoma, or it might have flipped, or might be swelling & to hang in there til 6 week checkup. Is this normal? Should I be worried? Would love to hear your thoughts. I've lost about 9 kgs since Optifast began pre op til now. Cannot lie on my side (of port) or tummy cheers Little Big Girl
  9. Greetings all you lovely earthlings, My name is Dee and i am 24 years old. After a life time of being overweight, a handful of fab diets, weight loss pills, gym memberships and trying to maintain my PCOS i have taken the first steps into looking at Gastric Banding. I have never had a sweet tooth and don't pig out on junk food, carbs is what tickles my fancy! I eat for many reasons, depression for a long time had been one of them. I skip meals so i would usually have an oversized dinner, filled with carbs. The physica; activity i don't mind, infact i enjoy it. The eating part is where i struggle. Being overweight since birth i had offcourse come across the idea of Gastric Banding a few times but never did any indepth research about what it actually entails. Being overweight and feeling completely responsible for what society see's as an 'ugly body' i felt guilty about the very idea of looking into lap band. The stigma associated with any weight loss procedure is that it's the 'easy way out'. At my consultation today (which i am proud about doing) my Bariatic Coordinator reassured me that it is not the easy way out, 'lap band is just a tool, you still need to do the hard work.' She measured my height at 160cm and weight at 132kgs, bmi of 51 and excess weight of 68kgs. My Bariatic Coordinator explained to me about the difficulty of trying to lose weight with pcos and the different types of weight loss surgery's that are being done today. The bypass and sleeve are something that didn't appeal to me. The very thought of having my insides cut up scares me a little, so i am seriously looking into lapband instead and really excited about it. SIOS who i am going through seem to have a great team of doctors, surgeons and dieticians that get really involved in the care and progdress of their clients, which is something that appeals to me. I need a large support network. I also thought it would be a great idea to find others who have transformed and changed their lives through weight loss surgery, to help motivate and encourage me along my journey of weightloss. I look forward to sharing with you my success one day and reading up on all of your personal successes too. Hope you have a lovely day! Dee
  10. So I am in the process of getting my health care fund sorted but I have a few questions. I live in Victoria and I was wondering how much people where out of pocket with a PHI? Has anyone succeeded in dipping into their superfund for the out of pocket funds? One more question, apparently with some health funds there are gap cover doctors, which means that there is no gap in the procedure so no out of pocket, has anyone found these doctors? I cannot find the right practitioner on the list for the PHI i want to go with. Apologues for so many questions but I hope someone has some answers to these. Thank you

    Lap Band Hypnotherapy

Hi, I'm new this is my first posting. I was just wondering if anyone has had any success with hypnotherapy. I am booked in after Christmas for lap band surgery on the Sunshine Coast, but I went to a hypnotherapist and had virtual lap band hypnosis 6 weeks ago and I am having really great results. Has anyone done this and what is the most weight you have lost? Thanks
  16. Hi All, I am 23 years old and am on the waiting list to get banded which I expect to have prior to christmas. After a year of slogging it out with my personal trainer and not being able to lose any weight, just getting physically stronger I have decided it's time to get the band as an aid to hopefully help me move the weight. I am wanting to get some feedback from those who have just got the band and how they are finding the transition, and also those who have had it for over a few months and how you are finding it has changed your life not only physically but emotionally. I used to be a size 8 and had an accident which has made me unable to run anymore. This lead to over the years slowly putting on weight and not being able to do it. I made many life changes and tried diets etc.. It has been hard also as I am gluten and fructose intolerant. If anyone can help me with any food suggestions that would be great!! All of your stories have been truly inspiring. The before and after photos are a testament to your dedication and hard work. :D Look forward to hearing about your stories. xx
  17. Hi, I am was is classified as "severley obese" which is beyond morbidly obese, with a BMI of 61. I saw my GP and was recommended to see a surgeon about the Lap Band surgery for weight loss. I finally met with the Surgeon today and he has told me that I should consider all my options and choose between lap band surgery or gastric bypass (he didn't go into sleeving, so i'm guessing he didn't think that to be a good option) I was all gun-ho for the band, but now the more I read about bypass I am wondering if it is better. I know a lot of people on here swear by their bands (it has definately helped alot of people, and congratulations to you all) but has anyone had the bypass surgery? Was anyone else given the same options and why did you choose what you chose?

Finally! I have now been banded

Howdy Everyone, Well I have finally been banded!!!! I'm so excited about starting my new journey :) (As you can tell) Was banded on the 16th March 2012 by Dr Roger Berry of CWLS at Cabrini Brighton. Roger is an amazing surgeon, so friendly and professional and the staff and nurses at Cabrini Brighton were fantastic. Considering I was having an operation, it was a very friendly experience for me. I'm now back at home with my Girlfriend - our first time apart in like 6 months so was nice to come home to her. Started on my fluids only diet today, of course the stomach swelling is still there quite a bit so I don't really feel hungry at all at present, wonder how long that will last tho. I would just like to also thank Helen Bauzon my dietitian - if your in need of a good dietitian in Melbourne then I would highly recommend her. I will add the links for both CWLS and Helen at the bottom of my post. Had some pain when I was in recovery, so I had some morphine which set me up good and proper and I felt like a million bucks LOL. No pain overnight or this morning, pain only started to kick in this afternoon but it hasn't been unbearable as such just annoying more then anything. Lost 3.2Kilo's on Tuesday when I weighed myself, which takes my total weight loss to 18.8 kilo's so far - which i'm very happy about. If the weight continues to come off like that, then I will be over the moon (although I'm not deluding myself into thinking every week will be that good). Anyway guys and gals, I'm heading off to bed. Have a good one everyone. Cheers, Craig CWLS - http://www.completeweightlosssurgery.com.au/ Helen Bauzon - http://www.helenbauzon.com.au
  19. Hey Everyone, Thought I should put up another blog post since it's now day 15 and lot's has been happening. Have been on Optifast now for 15 days and I've now lost 12.2 KG's, 7.2KG first week and 5.0KG this week - so i'm pretty stoked to be honest. Have been putting in a lot of effort in regards to exercise, walking between 30 and 40 minutes every night or swimming for an hour and I go for a really long walk on Saturday night - 1.5hrs worth of walk. Diet is getting easier now, although I still want to gnaw my arm off sometimes. I just go exercise some more, or have a big drink which usually helps to get rid of said hunger - well at least enough to make it go into the background. Had my Sleep Test last Thursday night, so guess I will find out the results soon enough - here's hoping the sleep aponea has buggered off and I don't want to go back onto the CPAP machine. Superannuation check arrived in the mail last Friday, and has now been banked. So i'm all cashed up and ready for my operation. Expecting to hear back from the lovely gal's at CWLS sometime this week for a surgery date apparently. Thanks for all the support from everyone - such a lovely community here. Cheers, Craig

    How Much?

Good grief....."How MUCH?" Having decided to go ahead with the Surgery the ball began to roll very fast. Initially booked for mid January so as not to have Christmas to deal with post operatively I had time to potter along, sorting out sick leave cover for work and finances. I did mention earlier in my blog that I had a pesky Gallbladder, which suddenly up and caused major grief. I had maybe 4 attacks over a 7 day period and something finally snapped. What in the hell am I waiting for? I phoned the Surgeons office to enquire regarding an earlier date & suddenly I was going to be operated on in 7 days!!! They had had a booking post-poned only that morning so I was able to be slotted in! Holy COW.....I had no money organised, leave not covered etc, etc. Well it is amazing what you can accomplish in less than a week. I saw the bank manager and finances were arranged (I pay back $200 per f/night over 5 years) and I sorted some time off work (2 weeks all up) and someone to help look after my children. So three weeks after initially meeting with the Surgeon to discuss Orbera I was on an operating table about to have my Gallbladder removed and a Lapband inserted! Talk about fast work
