    Anxious and excited!

Hi all! My name is Gerri. I joined the community just recently and wanted to introduce myself. I am scheduled for lap band surgery on December 13 and begin my four week course of Optifast tomorrow. Due to other diseases I suffer, I could not have the sleeve as an option in my journey, but am confident with the right attitude and also the determination, I can accomplish all I dream with the band. I have Rheumatoid, Ankylosing Spondylosis, Sciatica, Eczema and all the other great things that come with that. However, I have been given a great chance to help myself with this surgery. I know that it will not cure what I have, BUT it will make it a little easier to get through every day if I am not also dealing with excessive weight. I look forward to sharing my story and hope to get some input from some of you who have had a similar experience. I wish everyone an amazing journey!

The good, the bad & the ugly

Hi I'm new here so I'll give a quick rundown of my situation; Chase, 26, female, 120kg, always been a bigger girl but since early 2014 I had a traumatic event that left me with anxiety, depression and my weight has spiralled out of control since. All attempts to lose weight since have failed or left me heavier. I have been through a number of antidepressants but most of them make me really sweaty and also gain weight, this was humiliating and I gave up on AD's over 1 month ago because I can't handle putting on any more weight. I'm looking to have sleeve surgery, I live in Sydney. I do not have health insurance that will cover the surgery. I would like to hear some real feed back about good or bad surgeon's, are there places that are more/less expensive (most places have the cost if you do have insurance) and there places with long wait lists or quick service. And any other information you guys have for me. Thanks Chase

    Hi all!

Hi everyone, I'm new here as you can see I've finally come to the decision that I need to get my weight in the healthy range to be around longer for my kids & husband. I'm 34 and have struggled with my weight since I was a child. Got my first appointment with Dr Charles Mosse at Canberra Bariatric this Friday and I'm a tad nervous to say the least. Wish me luck!

    "Stuck" moment

Hi all. I was banded on the 8th of August, so I'm nearly two weeks post-op. I've been sifting through a lot of different topics and questions on here and what's stuck out the most is exactly that - the "stuck" moments. Ironic, hey? To be honest I'm quite worried about the first time I will experience this for myself. It's enevitable - I know it will happen, but I'm extremely scared of it. What do I do when it happens? Drink? Don't drink? Wait? Try to bring it up? Ehhhh! Help! x

    Finally taking the plunge

So after waiting out the PHI waiting period, I have seen my surgeon (Dr Khaleal) and I have booked in for surgery!!! I am really excited and focusing on getting as much information in as possible to help me prepare for the changes, and to utilise the bands full potential. I have been stalking this site for a long while now so I will introduce myself - my name is Rachael, I'm 28 from Western Sydney (Penrith actually). I am a single mum and I'm so looking forward to finally ridding having a REAL tool to help me get rid of my excess weight. I'm open to any advice anyone wants to give but basically I'm just happy to be here

    New Melbournian!

Hey, I am new to all of this and i am taking out my PHI in a fortnight. I am planning on going with medibank, what have others thought of this PHI? Also, apparently there are doctors that have gap cover which means that you are not out of pocket (only the excess) has anyone gone through this way? I also heard you can access your super in order to pay for out of pocket expenses, has anyone done this and succeeded? thank you and sorry for so many questions. I just want to make sure I have my fact rights!

    New & feeling nervous!

Hi All, Well it's my first post and I am 1 week pre surgery for my band ( with Dr Taylor at the SAN). Unfortunately the first forum i clicked on was banders having them removed and I panicked - eek! Now extra nervous, now especially about reflux and choking etc.I understand the band isn't for everyone though, originally I wanted a sleeve but Dr said no as I have had a fundoplacation in the past. I am excited about being banded but definitely looking for some advice on getting through the first few weeks. Just to make it even easier on myself I'm a secret bander with only my husband and best friend in he know. Any advice is appreciated.

    Banded 24-Hours Ago

Hi everyone - was banded yesterday at the SAN @ 9am by Dr Craig Taylor from the OClinic in North Sydney. Thought I'd put down some thoughts now that I'm back home. Overall, it was a wonderful experience - the staff are great and I was well looked after. I was nervous going in, as I was on my own, but they put me at ease. I waited in the waiting area, then someone at reception double checked my paperwork and asked me to sit down again. 10 minutes later, I was called to the Day Surgery preperation ward, where you basically strip down and get the (very fetching) one piece gown to wear (wether you are a man or a woman, I'm a man!) After 30 minutes, a nurse came in and read me the same questions everyone asked, 'name, DOB, what you in for etc.' they do this to ensure you are you at every stage of the operation, right up until surgery. Another nurse shaved my tummy - and I was good to go. A porter then wheeled me up to the theatre waiting area. I waited here, dozing on and off, for about 30 minutes. I was then wheeled into the pre-op room to meet Mr Kumar the anaesthetist. They put a needle in my arm (missed the first time, OUCH! How come the rest of me is so fat and yet I have thin veins!) but once it settled the second time, no issues. Dr Taylor came bounding through and remarked that I had a big smile on my face - I told him that this was like Christmas for me and after a lot of personal pain and depression around body size, this was he beginning of my new life. He gave me a high five and ten minutes later I was wheeled in to surgery. I have never been for an operation before, so I was fascinated. The team relaxed me and Mr Kumar told me that once he'd fastened me up to all sorts of tubes and wires, I was getting something to make me sleep. And...3 seconds later - although it was actually 40 - I woke up in surgery and the lap band was DONE and the operation a success. They then quickly took me to the recovery room. I had a little tightening across the tummy when I woke - I could tell someone had been down there - but nothing SERIOUS in terms of pain. You are pretty drowsy by this stage. but in a nice way - it's a sort of twilight zone and you can sleep pretty peacefully. However they did give me some pain relief which was nice. After an hour, they were ready to transfer me to my room. I met the physio and he walked me up and down the corridor a couple of times and I felt really good about how easy it was to move. At 2pm I was pretty much wide awake and bursting for a pee, so the nurse gave me a bottle. Phew! That felt GOOD. I was surprised that I felt quite hungry too! Not for food, but felt like something nourishing. So they gave me a cup of tea (remember this is only a few hours poste surgery - and told me to SIP very slowly. I sipped about a litre of water over the afternoon. At no point did the pain levels feel more than 5 out of 10. My head felt a bit swimmy, but but otherwise I was feeling really good. Dinner came at 6.30 and consisted of a hot clear broth, a Sustagen drink and some apple juice. This was plenty - and took me about 3 hours to get through. They gave me a painkiller before I went to bed at 9.30 and I slept pretty well (albeit with 2 blood pressure checks overnight.) Had breakfast this morning and after some meds from the hospital phramacy went home. They gave me painkillers and junior panadol - I asked for the junior as upstairs, when I tried the soluble ones, they were quite fizzy and made me burp - and gave pain! The normal ones felt too big so I asked for the junior syrup and you have to have about 6 teaspoons to reach the adult dose! Big baby, yeah I know....) So this morning - 24 hours later - how does it feel? A bit more tender actually. And it hurts when I burp or cough. But this is pretty major surgery and I'm gentle on myself (as you need to be with yourselves). But I'm happily siting here at my computer, having made a cup of tea and I'll have some gentle walks and get back into Game of Thrones, which I've only just discovered. But I could not be happier. I've worked so hard to deal with all my life issues - mental as well as physical ones - and this one for me is the final hurdle. And I DO think it will change my life as I'm so ready for it. Sorry about the long post - I just wanted to provide detail if any new bandits wanted it. Reading everyone else's was great for me and wanted to return the favour. I'll keep you posted on my progress and look forwards to reading yours. Start weight 108.6kgs Banded weight 104.5kgs

    July 2013 Bandits

Hi everyone, I'm banding on Friday July 12th at Sydney Adventist Hospital (I hope nothing goes wrong just because Im an athiest!) This has been a deeply personal journey for me, and one which - surprisingly - has led to a lot of shocking judgement from others. ("Why, that's the easy option?", "Oh come on, just train harder", "It's because you don't eat well enough.") Well duhhhh. By day, I'm a Company Director, and travel quite a lot for work with global clients. But at night, I'm secretly terrified and equally excited at the journey that lies ahead as a bandit! I can't wait! I've battled with the weight for 15 years and I know the lap band will be a wonderful tool for me. So I'm joining on here for support and to listen, and to share my experience in the hope that we can all learn from one another.

    Starting Over

Hi all. Had my band over 3 years ago and lost 25 kilos. Now I know its no excuse. Bit 8 months ago I got ll the fluid taken out cause I was not in a good place. Proceeded to eat crap and lots of it. Put a lot back on. My family and issues are now sorted and I'm seeing mg Dr on Friday to start getting my fills again. And back on the road to losing. anyone else re setting and startinf over.... Thanks. Lannie.
  11. I did something today that I normally wouldn't do... While at the hospital waiting in clinic - I saw a young guy (couldn't be older than 20 maybe younger?) with his mum who was about to start the whole banding experience. Quite frankly he look quite scared, so I approached them while they were waiting also and let them know there was THIS great support group website/forum that I have found so much help with as there is such a lack of support post banding through the public system. I told them that it's JUST people sharing their experiences, however it's great to know your not alone when certain things happen and its the first time. I told the mother "I'm sure you'll be a bit like my mum & there's so theres a section with recipes when you run out of ideas" - (as I can't physically stand long enough to make anything at the moment due to my OA and nerve damage, not even a cup of tea, mum does my food for me. She is registered as my carer as most days I can't even dress myself). I hope I did the right thing? Would you do this?
  12. Mrs B

    Hi there, I'm Mrs B!

Hi everyone! I joined the site today and wanted to introduce myself. I've been struggling with my weight for about 10 years now. I've tried every diet out there and the only thing that seems to work is when I've been put on Xenical or Reductil. I maintain it for a short while but then the weight just goes back on again when something stressful happens in my life. My husband suggested lap band surgery to me a while ago as although he thinks I'm perfect, he can see how miserable I am and how much I obsess about my weight. On top of this my father has been in hospital for 2 out of the last 4 months with complications arising from mismanaged diabetes. I also just fou d out that 4 out of 7 in my dads immediate family have diabetes. So I took myself off to my gp and got a referral to see Dr Craig Taylor in Crows Nest. Although my BMI is a (relatively) low 31, I also have high blood pressure, depression and higher than normal levels of cholesterol. I'm booked in to meet with Dr Taylor on Friday 6/12 and surgery should be 4-6 weeks post consultation. I am equally excited and terrified about the changes that will come around from the surgery. Mostly I'm worrid about losing my best friend... Food. Anyway, I look forward to getting to know you all and hearing any tips or words of encouragement you have to share Mrs B
  13. Hi All, I just thought I should give a formal "Hello". This site is just wonderful and I am really grateful to everyone who shares their stories - good and bad! I wont bore you too much with mine though - same old yo-yo dieting, Personal training injuries, fat genes, and have decided to pull my head out of the sand! I have had enough of beating myself up about my weight and wearing fat frumpy daggy clothes. So banding it is! I have to say though - even with all the stories and knowledge and information - I am getting a little bit more nervous each week, and with each step I take. The chat with the doctor for a referral, getting the bloods and urine done, and the next step is meeting the surgeon - Stewart Skinner in Melbourne (has anyone been banded by him??) - on December 4th. I don't think I have really sat down for a decent length of time and talked about how fat i am and how unhappy it makes me. Im not looking forward to it - but at the same time I am! Anyway, I have some questions about time frames. How long from your initial meeting with the surgeon was it before you got banded? Did you have to wait long? Does everyone do Optifast and if so, for how long? Also how long was your stay and can you describe the whole process from arrival to getting home? I am hoping to prepare myself for the journey, so any information will be appreciated. Good luck to you all!

    Step One - the GP

There are a lot of things you hear about weight loss. Some good, some consider miracles and some that are just so bad you just want to ignore them. I think its just for the best to stay away from things with the word celebrity linked with them! I was at home recently, off work with the flu and I said to myself that why not! Why not take this opportunity to ask my doctor about banding, I was already going for a medical certificate anyway, may as well make the most of it. So off I went. While it wasn't one of the worst conversations I have ever had to have, it certainly wasn't easy. I'm not one that knows what a real therapy session is like, I normally can handle making sense of my life just fine on my own; but to actually say to someone else that you have a problem and you need help was the biggest thing I have ever done in my life. This coming from someone that is use to having to deal with his own problems and having to open up and to share what I and I'm sure so many you on this journey would consider, their darkest hour. It is hard to admit what you really eat. My GP is very understanding, very supportive of my goal. After the blood tests came back ok, just a slightly fatty liver and nothing else to worry about. We discussed other options and after laying out my life story he sent me away with that next nail blighting task, a referral to a specialist! It sat on the kitchen table for a few weeks, often I would just stare at it, thinking can I do this? Should I do this? It didn't help that some liked the idea and some thought it was a very drastic thing to undergo. But ultimately it is only you that can decide what is right for you, only you know the pain and the suffering that has brought you to this life changing decision. "Hello this is Sue." a soft but welcoming voice came over the phone. "Hi Sue, this is David. I have a referral and I would like to make an appointment." By this time again I was starting to think 'should I just hang up, no be strong, you have to do this'. "Ok great, the earliest appointment I have is in about a month and half, how about Wednesday lunchtime?" I was hoping to get in sooner, stop all that thinking and just get on with the action, now theres just more time to sit and ponder. Do I have a choice? Not really, coming so close to Christmas I just have to take what's available. Damn you referral, you sat there mocking me, making me question but eventually helped me to build up courage. "Oh really, he's that booked out, ok thanks, yes that should be fine." "Ok great I have booked you in with the specialist and the dietitian afterwards. We also have a group information session next week if your interested just to find out more about the procedures, would you be interested?" I needed to know more than what Wikipedia says and some of the horror stories I've Googled! "Yes that sounds interesting, please sign me up!" There it's done, you can relax and stop thinking about it."Ok thanks David, see you soon!"

    In the beginning...

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. Your friends still loved and supported you however as time went by it became harder and harder to find any clothes that fit, let alone any that looked any good. It was the simple things, the little things that broke the straw of my back. Not being able to tie a shoe lace easily, having to be careful to not put your back out getting out of the car, working up a sweat just walking up to the second floor. It is time. Most of my life I’ve been a big guy, starting in Primary School and the lunches from the corner shop. Starting out as one sausage roll and small Big M to two sausage rolls and a large Big M in the later years. I was a fussy kid, my friends would argue that I still am. Although I think the closer ones would agree that I have spread my wings and started to vary my palate in recent years. Before my school years I would live on frankfurts and mashed potato, hot chips and soft drink. My mother was also a big woman back then, while she did her best to keep me fed, I was too strong for her and she had no choice but to give in. Had I wished she stood firm, yes however I don’t blame her for it, stubborn kids are not easy to deal with and she just wanted to make me happy at the time. By 14 I remember that I was 80Kg, not sure of my height at the time so I can’t give an indication of the BMI I was back then, but I was big; big enough to be singled out at school, high school especially. While I would like to say that I have fond memories of my childhood dreams, there were also the not so pleasant experiences. It was expected, every fat kid gets picked on at school and I usually took it on the cuff of my shirt. It did bother me, but back then there wasn’t much I wanted to do about it and by the time I was a senior I was in a great group of friends that kind of shielded me from those that their only pass time was to barrage the emotional living daylights out of the venerable. By the end of high school I was about 110-115kg, 175cm, giving me a BMI of approximately 37, the Very High Risk category… By the time I finished University, living away from home I worked my way up to 122Kg and a BMI of 39.8, just a stone’s throw away from that life changing term… Morbid Obesity. Well at that point I made some sacrifices in my life and with the support of a very good friend of mine that played professionally in the NRL, supported and motivated me to make some changes. Well what a time in my life that was! Starting 4thMay 2009 I began a regimented routine of 6 small, relatively healthy meals a day along with around 2 physical boot camp style exercise sessions with my NRL buddy. On the 8th October 2009, just five months later I had lost 10.2Kg. I was a new person! I experienced designer clothes for the first time. I remember the day I was in Sydney and visited my first Industry store. I purchased a pair of size 40 (the largest they make) jeans. That was the best day of my life. I wore those jeans like a badge of honour. Sadly that was to come to a crashing halt and like all good things, they come to an end. I lost my focus and my motivation, but worst of all I lost my support. My buddy that was helping me got contract to play elsewhere and had to move away. I tried to keep up my motivation and determination however I feel that with a combination of not having any more one-on-one support, that someone to keep you motivated and focused, I lost mine. I tried to keep off the bad foods, keep riding to work but it all just fell apart and here I am, 12Kg heavier than when I started, that’s right folks, 134Kg with a BMI of 44, Morbidly Obese. While this is a sad time in my life, like the phoenix is reborn out of the ashes of its demise, I too will be reborn and starting now I have begun the mission of taking back my body, my life, my soul. Please join me while I take this journey of rediscovery and new heath through the miracle that is gastric banding and the transformation that is about to take place. Fighting the food fight, one band at a time.
