    Just sleeved

Hi everyone, After so many failed weight loss attempts I looked at medical options (drugs vs surgery). Now I've survived the pre-op diet and was sleeved on 11 December by Dr Devadas at Nepean Private. This a great forum and has been really useful for research and encouragement. Michael

    New sleever

Hi there I stalked around on here for a while as I did my research - now that I have an op date for my gastric sleeve and its all feeling very real, I thought I should come out of lurking. I'm halfway through the pre-op phase. I don't love dairy based shakes in general, but its doable and I'm getting by (with the exception of day one and two when I thought the hangry was going to be the end of me .... and all those within a 10k radius!) I was originally not having the operation until late Feb, however an opening came up and I took it. It does however mean I'm off overseas for a little trip about three weeks after my surgery. Im open to any and all suggestions for eating while travelling in the week 3 - 6 phase. Lots of feelings happening at the moment (none of which I am eating I will add) - excited, scared, nervous, apprehensive, determined... One week and counting - Eek!! xx

    The Road Taken

Hi everyone, I am new to this site and just starting my WLS journey having been sleeved exactly one week ago today. So far my recovery from the operation has been going well and I am very excited about the changes which will occur over the next few months - not just in terms of my weight but more importantly, in regards to my lifestyle. I realise that there will be challenges ahead but in deciding to have the surgery I have realised that I need to take ownership of my own health so It is my goal to meet challenges head on and to stay positive! I am really looking forward to being more active again (my ability to exercise has been very limited over the last few years due to injuries). Also, being more motivated to get back in the kitchen to cook healthy meals instead of having unhealthy options cause they were 'easier' (they sure don't look so easy now). Everything I have seen from this site so far looks great and it is encouraging to know that when I have questions (and I'm sure there will be many....) that I will also benefit from this wealth of experience and support so thank you in advance!

    Waves hello

Hi all, glad I found this group. I am investigating getting a gastric sleeve, and have an appointment booked with a Dr Brendan Ryan, (Westmead) has anyone heard of him? I turned 50 last year, and told myself It I wasn't able to actively work on weightloss, I would try WLS. I am still in the investigation stage, but I have met two people this year who had gastric banding and they are so happy, I am really nervous! cheers Jac
  7. Hi everyone, I am very excited to say that I will be sleeved in November. I have private health insurance but dropped my level of cover which took out gastrics. So, I have increased back up & now have to wait 12 months. Boo to that!! Anyway, I don't think I am going to be able to wait!! Has anyone out there been recently been treated as a private patient in a public hospital? My surgeon requires PHI but I would consider swapping if I could be sleeved sooner! How do I cope psychologically when you have to wait 12 months!? Sohealthy (soon to be..)

    hello all!

hello all! I'm new to the forum, I'm considering surgery, just starting my journey, looking at options and reading some of your stories and comments is confidence building and informative, I too am slowly gaining weight at a constant rate, (114kgs) insulin resistance and the rest that goes with the weight gain, although I have changed my lifestyle since that diagnosis I'm still gaining, well it feels that way to me, id actually be very interested in my blood results since my last ones ... I'm sure you all know the story, anyway I live in Newcastle NSW and would love to hear from anyone that would like to tell me their story, successful or not the more info and encouragement I can get the better

    Sleeve or Band?

Hi all, I'm not sure if there is a thread already asking this as I am new here, but I'd like to get some opinions on what has worked best for people, band or sleeve. I had my first appointment today and my surgeon was pretty much leaning toward the sleeve. He said that he has only done 2 bands this year as the sleeve is becoming the more popular option. He also said that he is removing a lot of bands. I have been thinking about WLS for a number of years now and I have always had my heart set on the band. However, from what I have read in the past 6 months the sleeve is becoming the better option? I am currently 113kg and 45kg overweight. I'm just really confused about which option is best so I'd like to see what has worked for others. Thanks in advance. Zara

    December 2014 bander

Going from a lap band to a sleeve

Hi everyone! My name is Leigh, I'm 33, live in Sydney (originally from good ol' Brissy!) and I have been searching around for a lap band/sleeve forum so I'm glad I found one. I got my lap band back in December 2006 when I weighed 150kgs and was only 24yrs old. I worked in health insurance at the time and had done my homework extensively however there was a lack of support, no FB groups or forums to talk with other patients. I knew I wanted something that was reversible though. I lost about 17kgs initially and was pleased with how I was managing things. I flatlined with my weight loss (lack of exercise, no band tightening, lack of motivation) at about the 130-135kg mark and that is where I stayed for several years. Then about 4 years ago, I started a new job where they had just started a weight loss challenge. I'm competitive with a lot of things, but weight loss has never been one of them. I got on board though, and with several band tightenings, I smashed through 20kgs in 3 months (won the challenge!!), and then continued to lose after that. I got down to 104kgs and was feeling fabulous! Not long after I was made redundant and changed jobs which was extremely stressful as my partner had just quit his job to study while I supported the both of us. During the previous 2 or so years I had extremely bad reflux and was coughing excessively at night that I could never sleep and would throw up saliva constantly. During the day I was fine and wouldn't throw up food as I have always known my limit and have lived with my lap band for years. Underlining all of that I was severely anaemic, unaware to me. So out of sheer frustration with my surgeon not helping me, I got a referral to another surgeon. He told me my band should have never been as tight as it was, which was causing the reflux and the coughing and he released it. Overnight, I slept! It was a miracle. The motivation was still there to lose weight however with a stressful job change, I put on a few kgs, and my mindset went from being motivated to feeling defeated. In the last 2 years I have put on all of the weight I had lost and I got up to 152.5kgs. When I was 104kgs, I had thrown out all of my fat clothes because I was never going back to that, but as I put weight on, I had to buy clothes again. I have about 6 massive bags of 'skinny' clothes just waiting to be worn again. So, a bit over 12 months ago I increased my health insurance and booked in to get the gastric sleeve done. With preparation for my surgery I have lost 3.9kgs in the last week (I can feel that old motivation coming back again!). I'm scheduled to have my lap band removed on the 24th September (next week!) and get the gastric sleeve on the 23rd November. I've had several acquaintances, an old neighbour and old colleagues also get the sleeve and while watching them as my guinea pigs, my test subjects, lol, that this is the right decision for me. I'm not nervous, or anxious, since I've gone through the surgery before, I just want it to hurry up! I look forward to sharing my journey with you all and learning some things from you too! Below are some photos from my journey over these years. I will start my photo tracking again just before I go into surgery next week. This was the tracking I did during my weight loss challenge at my old job. I could tell my moles on my stomach were getting closer, you could see my ears better and my stomach was rising very quickly! These shorts are a size 26. Sadly, I am sitting in them right now as I type this, and they are fitting me very well. I loved using these shorts as an indicator of my weight loss. And you can see the fat clothes I was putting in bags to give to charity! I miss doing fun runs (walks!), million paws walk etc because of my weight gain. So as a motivator I have pulled out the calendar for the next 12 months and marked all the events I would like to attend. Here I am at my lightest at 104kgs, with a bulky jacket on lol...AND I was fitting into skinny jeans. This is my motivation photo!
  13. Hi everyone I'm new to this forum and so glad I found you. I was banded on 18th May 15, With Dr Teague, So I'm three weeks post op My first two weeks have been great besides shoulder pain? I've lost a total of 6.9kgs but this week (started purée foods) my weight loss has stopped and I'm feeling quiet depressed. Is this normal? My next appointment is on Thursday and I think ill get my first fill by then. Will this kickstart my weight loss again. I'm constantly hungry this week which is also worrying. Any advise would be great. Last visit, dr was happy with my loss and said that within the next two weeks (being this Thursday) I should drop another 3kgs I've only lost 1.5? I'm also getting a sharp stitch like pain under my left breast every time I eat? Sorry for all the questions just looking forward to getting the weight off which is hard when I become paranoid about what is going on Starting weight 113.9 18/5/2015 Current weight 107.2 09/06/2015
  14. Hey people, new here and looking to chat about peoples recent experiences with Dr Dolan. I am booked in for the first of May for surgery and am having mixed thoughts about it. Any advice?
  15. Hi, I'm new to the site/ group Apologies in advance for the long winded post! Although I'm in the research stages of the sleeve gastrectomy I am seriously considering getting the surgery done in time to come. Growing up I always compared myself to other girls and saw myself as big, being that I am short (153cmish) and they were tall didn't help. My weight was probably a little over for my height but throughout the years it's slowly piled on, moving to the country (driving not walking everywhere) hasn't helped. I've went from 80kg [2009] to 113kg [2014] (this includes after pregnancy in 2013). I recently got down to 102.7kg with the help of medication (duromine) but back up to 105kg within last month with constant travel and poor food choices on the road, the medication has been the kickstart I needed but I know it's not realistic or safe to stay on it and am looking for a more permanent solution. My BMI is 45 I feel like I have exhausted all options and this looks to be what I truly need, (along with healthy eating and exercise of course). Portion size has always been my issue also, just eating and not recognising the signs of fullness, I could imagine a smaller stomach size would help immensely provided I ate the right things. I don't want to be one of those mum's that watches from the sidelines & is too unhealthy to join in! I would just like to know some details from those who have gone through the private health insurance road, I know each are different and the prices rise in april but want to make sure I get signed up with one that covers the sleeve surgery, and also what the experiences with different companies are like.. good, bad otherwise??? I am from Victoria if that helps? Thanks a million for your time!!! Bianca

    Finally taking the plunge

So after waiting out the PHI waiting period, I have seen my surgeon (Dr Khaleal) and I have booked in for surgery!!! I am really excited and focusing on getting as much information in as possible to help me prepare for the changes, and to utilise the bands full potential. I have been stalking this site for a long while now so I will introduce myself - my name is Rachael, I'm 28 from Western Sydney (Penrith actually). I am a single mum and I'm so looking forward to finally ridding having a REAL tool to help me get rid of my excess weight. I'm open to any advice anyone wants to give but basically I'm just happy to be here

    Fat Geek to Fab Geek

Hi I'm Melissa. I live in Albany in Western Australia. I'm 25 and weigh 145kg my BMI is something ungodly like 48 I'm relatively free of illness, I don't have high blood pressure, I don't have diabetes. I do have very low self esteem and possible depression. I've been trying to lose weight for years, the most I've been able to lose is 10kg and then lost a friend and put it all back on. I haven't been in my doctor for a referral yet. Last time I spoke to her when I mentioned lap banding she changed the subject. I was a little disenchanted after that. I don't know how she could change the subject when it's obvious that I'm morbidly obese. I'm afraid about getting a lap banding, I'm worried about the price, I'm worried about it not working... But I don't want to be fat anymore.... Well I'm completely fine being fat, I just don't want to be morbidly obese. I've never let my weight affect me before, but I'm over it. I'm 25 and never done anything. I want confidence and to be comfortable in my body. And I think lap banding may help me.

    New Melbournian!

Hey, I am new to all of this and i am taking out my PHI in a fortnight. I am planning on going with medibank, what have others thought of this PHI? Also, apparently there are doctors that have gap cover which means that you are not out of pocket (only the excess) has anyone gone through this way? I also heard you can access your super in order to pay for out of pocket expenses, has anyone done this and succeeded? thank you and sorry for so many questions. I just want to make sure I have my fact rights!

    Lost new and confused

Hi all.... joined up today and feeling BLERGH and have no idea who to chat to that gets it.. :/ So thought I'd share and hopefully get some help advice chat etc... anything really SAHM of two boys 5'4 and 103 kg- pretty stable weight- doesn't tend to move a lot- like me I guess Really interested in Gastric surgery for a while now, fairly sure not considered an appropriate candidate for the band as I have an auto immune condition- and from what I have read that tends to make it a no no- So thinking on Bypass vs Sleeve. I don't binge eat- or over eat really - I know what your thinking i'm in denial how can I not and have so much chunky on my monkey, but seriously I don't drink alcohol, I do do tea or coffee, no soft drinks, no hot chips, no potato chips, no ice cream, no dairy really( occasional yogurt if it is home made) I do tend to skip breakfast which I know is bad, and ok ok sometimes lunch too- with me only eating one meal which would be something like vegies and a small bit of chicken or crumbed fish ( also don't do lamb, pork, beef) So if im honest I would say my one meal would be that of an average size adult meal ( Not counter meal style slab but not French minuscule serve ether) - who isn't dieting. Always drink 2litres a day water, biggest crave would be 2 days before period time I will seek slightly sweeter foods but that's it really, I don't gorge, ok again have been know to eat 1/2 a family size block of choc at period time to regret it the next day...... My down fall would be roast vegies,( pasta meh, steak meh, chips meh), all the "known" culprits I avoid because I don't like them enough to bother eating them. Im the kind of gal who wont eat something just because it is there- if I do happen to have pizza- it is bbq sauce or nothing- seriously I would rather go without than eat something I don't like. ( fussy I know) As I said I have auto immune issues joint issues etc- so I know I don't move as much as I should - that being said im fairly active, participate in city to bay, climb mount lofty etc- im fit- but fat..... apparently we cant be that though so back to my dilemma. ( no I cant even blame the meds as I try to stay off of them at all costs - apparently they cause weight gain ;P ) So my love of real food ( meaning not processed) clearly isn't doing me any favours- so I bit the bullet and started optifast a week ago.... Joint hurting- over not knowing if I have toes down there something had to give. Logic for and against went a little something like this - so many chemicals and additives- ewwwwwww BUT Dr's recommend it before surgery so it cant be TOO bad - so much sugar it's coating my teeth But surely there is some benefit in doing it or why would it be recommended by dr's before surgery - ok so it isn't too bad- I miss my vegies though- and struggling to eat my three replacements. Shhh just hold your nose and do it - really???? "healthy" is teaching my body to eat a choc flavoured gelatinous mousse type substance as "dinner" surely not you see I'm getting no where fast ..... But a week in- (and that time of month later) im down 4 kg. issue well I don't see this as a healthy option... I'm not hanging out for a choc bar here people I would murder someone for a bowl of peas!!!!! I have booked a visit with Dr Michael France- to discuss my options - on 20th August ( anyone know much about him)? Issue now thanks to my last week of artificial nutrients Im now under the BMI recommended for surgery *sigh*( too thin to be fat now whatever next) So no idea where to go what to do etc from here- Some amazing success stories from people on here, but equally some who weren't as happy as they thought. I need to get mass off for my joint and body health- plus it wouldn't hurt re introduce myself to my toes sometime in the near future. Will one of these options help me? or will i continue to avoid food only consuming a much smaller "main" mean at the end of the day still?? Would love to hear from anyone- because clearly I love to talk and feeling a bit overwhelmed right now as to where my path might be... thanks for listening guys -

    live life to the full

  21. Last Tuesday was one of the best days of the rest of my life. Hi Newbie Bandits. After suffering from cancer at 27, I have slowly put on an amazing 65 kg ( double of what I was then). Several years ago I had to have a small tumour removed from my duodenum. The surgeon then discussed with me the possibility of having the gastric band done. Advised that I was morbidly obese ( gosh I hate that saying) she said that the surgery would change my life. I said I would consider it after I had healed from the current surgery. Not long after that I received a letter from the health fund saying they would not be covering gastric banding anymore. I was shattered. No way could I even begin to afford the thousands of dollars for the procedure. My weight has just kept piling on. In March last year my eldest daughter (BekCanDoIt - she is here on the site) had the procedure done. 1o months later she has dropped 30 kgs and looks absolutely amazing. After having a small stroke on Mothers Day last year I knew I had to do something. I have tried every diet, fad, pills, gym, shake , meal plan available but to no avail. Exercise is tough due to the pain I suffer from my weight bearing knees. Last Monday, my hubby came home from work to tell me that a lady at his work has lost an unbelievable amount of weight and looks fabulous. He said if you want it done, go do it. Well I was excited but dismayed at the same time. Rotten health fund said they wouldn't pay. He said call them tomorrow and see what they say. Next morning as soon as the NSW branches opened ( ahead of us here in Qld by 1 hr) I called them. I told the lovely girl why I was calling and would the health fund reconsider in my circumstance as I have high blood pressure and have had the stroke. She advised that I have always been covered and the letter sent out to us was incorrect. Well..... if I could cartwheel, I would have. Then I set the ball in motion. Come 9am, I called the surgeon. As fate would have it she had a cancellation on the 18th Jan. Yep that is mine. She has a turnaround of around 2-3 weeks, so I am getting prepared. I hope that I will have my surgery in February. Next was the call to the GP to get a referral. Appointment booked for 2 days later. He also advised that the government are doing a health check for 45-49 yr old women and that includes the required blood tests. He said that I have his 100% support as he knows how hard I have tried to get rid of the beast that I carry around every day. ( happening tomorrow). My daughter said you will need to see a dietician also and you better book now as they are hard to get into. Thank God for a Band Buddy. Feeling pumped about the success of my 3 earlier calls, I called the dietician that my daughter had seen. The receptionist advised me that she no longer worked in the area...... My heart sank.... Next breath she says would you like to see another dietician , I can fit you in on 24th Jan. My oath I will..... As I said before, my daughter Bek has been banded for 10 mths now and was so wrapped that I have made the decision. She told me about the dreaded liquid diet to reduce the fat in your liver. That was my next goal. Get them shakes happening. Started Optifast last Wed. Only having 2 shakes and a meal per day and fruit or low carb snacks when I feel hunger pangs. In the process have lost 2kg in 6 days. I said to my girls and my hubby . This was meant to be. Bring on my date for surgery. Can't wait. Last Tuesday was one of the best days of the rest of my life. Cheers , Kelly
  22. Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here! Having my op on the 4th of December @ the Alfred Hospital so i'm literally halfway through the optifast period. I'm only 26 but life is complicated so its not an easy operation. About my complications: I had a Nasty x-country skiing accident in late 2006, and did a lot of damage to one of my hips. I've had 5 operations on it and its now classed as grade 4 osteoarthritis and I live with chronic pain and nerve damage. And secondly, for an unknown reason 2 years ago - symptoms developed almost 3 years ago, I developed respiratory problems (laryngeal stenosis) for which since found have needed operations (just had #9 in prep for lap banding) every 12-16 weeks to re-open my airways. The most complicated part of the banding is my throat, as I can not be properly intubated. I was studying Phys Ed and outdoor education and was on a Uni camp when I had the accident, and while I tried to maintain living independently but eventually had to move back home and mum is my full time career now. Please feel free to ask me any questions you'd like...I'm pretty much an open book. I'm worried about how I'll deal with the severe hip pain and then post op pain too. Same with the liquids phase. I'm already a bit snappy which is out of character for me. Also It will be the end of week 3 on Christmas Day and I really like Christmas ham. At Christmas every year I eat some ham, then the rest of my plate is salads. This is a bigger deal than it should be :-( lol. Starting weight: 105.6
