  1. It makes sense to me. Better to eat "real food" (i.e. unprocessed) and using nutritious ingredients rather than the VLCD shakes, bars, soups and desserts which have come out of a packet, and are a food-like product. Personally I'd much rather have a salad with some protein rather than eat those products. "Be Fit Food, founded by clinical dietitian Kate Save and bariatric surgeon Dr Geoff Draper, was born out of the pair’s frustration with clients using “shake diets” to attempt to lose weight before surgery. The company sells tailored, prepackaged meals based around the ketogenic diet — high fat, moderate protein, low carbohydrate — which forces the body to rapidly burn fat. Unlike competitors such as Lean Cuisine and Weight Watchers, Be Fit Foods claims to be the only company in the market that uses a “science-first” approach, starting with the required formula of macronutrients and working backwards to create the recipes." http://www.news.com.au/finance/small-business/lose-10-kilos-in-two-weeks-be-fit-food-scores-300000-investment-on-shark-tank/news-story/39ad4a6220a713a3dc5126161c346e90#itm=newscomau|finance|right-now-in-|0|Shark Tank Australia 2017%3A Be Fit Food scores %24300K from Jan...|story|Karl on Australia Day%3A ‘It must change’&itmt=1502837924978

    New sleever

Hi there I stalked around on here for a while as I did my research - now that I have an op date for my gastric sleeve and its all feeling very real, I thought I should come out of lurking. I'm halfway through the pre-op phase. I don't love dairy based shakes in general, but its doable and I'm getting by (with the exception of day one and two when I thought the hangry was going to be the end of me .... and all those within a 10k radius!) I was originally not having the operation until late Feb, however an opening came up and I took it. It does however mean I'm off overseas for a little trip about three weeks after my surgery. Im open to any and all suggestions for eating while travelling in the week 3 - 6 phase. Lots of feelings happening at the moment (none of which I am eating I will add) - excited, scared, nervous, apprehensive, determined... One week and counting - Eek!! xx

One week and counting - Eek!! xx
  4. This makes sense to me.

13 Oct is the big day

After years of thinking about weight loss, struggling with health issues in additional to gradual weigh gain - I've booked in for gastric sleeve with Dr Victor Leiw this week. Part of the reassurance that this is what I need has been the online stories people have shared, as well meeting/knowing a dozen others in the last 12mths whom have had positive outcomes from being sleeved. Two months ago I was 183k, after several weeks on pre-op I'm 170k. Let's see what the future brings... Wish me luck.
  6. Hi all, I'm a newbie here in the forums. I'm getting banded on the 26th of June, and have been doing opti since Monday. I've read on the forums about people hating the taste of opti and feeling quite ill in the first stages of keto. I know this is silly but I don't mind the taste and I'm feeling ok apart from a little bit hungry, but I'm worried that I'm not doing it right. I'm doing everything I've been told but I'm worried it's not working. Anyone feel the same?

    Curried Cauliflower Soup

Hi All, I made this tonight and it complies with my pre-op instructions from the dietician. However, I think it would also be good after surgery and it can be made quite thin if you add a bit more liquid and blend it up well. I'm going to call it my own recipe because the one I was following I had to alter majorly! Curried Cauliflower Soup 1 small head cauliflower, cut into small florets 1 brown onion, diced 3-4 cups of veggie stock 2-3 tbsp thai red curry paste Now, these directions are very complicated Throw everything into a pot and cook until cauliflower is starting to go mushy. Blend and that's it. I think I should get about 4 serves out of it

    1st Consultation coming up

Hi everyone, I have just joined the site. Have been considering lapband on and off for years and have finally booked in a consultation coming up in 2 weeks. I am so nervous and scared, and even though i'm so desperate to finally win the weight battle, i'm still not too sure if I will go through with it. I am at my biggest ever of 145kgs, and find it hard to even walk to Coles at the end of my street. Would love to hear your thoughts, and what you found the biggest struggles. Anxiously seeking guidance.

    Introduction and Pre-op difficulties

Hi All, Just starting the journey, i'm 2 days pre-op with Mr Ian Michell in Melbourne - tuesday the 9th is D-Day! I have been umming and ahhing over whether or not to start some kind of diary online, partly to make myself more accountable, and partly in the desperate hope that fellow banders have been, or currently are in, similar situations and be willing to share their tricks and suggestions to navigate the challenges ahead. Having looked over this amazing site with so much community and support, i decided that i would begin a blog here in the hope that i might receive some of that support and help others come through this experience also. So here goes, day 10 into pre op diet. I'll start with some basic info about me - im a 25yr old woman living in melbourne, almost finished my final year of University. My start weight was 135kgs, and so far i have lost approximately 4kgs. The scales battery ran out four days ago and i haven't gotten around to getting new ones yet Have been completely fine about the op up until today, but for some reason all the anxiety and doubt has come crashing in and i'm starting to ask myself - am i doing the right thing? I mean, i cant even stick to the pre-op diet! The first week was fine, i was chugging down my optislim with superlicious pride while my partner and family had birthday roast's and chocolate cake, TWICE (the bastards). But yesterday I managed to convince myself that one slice of toasted cheese was ok if it was whole grain, low fat cheese, and i skipped a shake, (thereby consuming similar calorie intake) and then today i had two cans of tuna and an egg along with all the veg. While i've lost weight on the pre-op diet, these last three days have been SO tough. I've done alot of research into this surgery,so i know that the one of the really difficult parts is in changing your thinking and your eating habits. But today i just felt so defeated about my lack of control, scared about what this surgery will really mean for the rest of my life, and surprisingly, very angry at all the people i have spoken too or had contact with in the last week who have suggested this is the easy way out. So, given some reflection (look how well this blog is working out already) i guess i have just labeled my first hurdle to my healthy lifestyle change - i comfort eat when stressed. The first thing i did was go on youtube and watch my clips of the amazing women who had come before me. (newtoy4kt in particular) It has been such a great help to have so many brave people post their experiences online, so motivating and helpfully honest. And it made me remember that it really all comes down to the basic question - how much do i value my life? We all know the statistics on diabetes, heart disease, cancer and depression associated with obesity, not to mention all the social horrors we have all had to deal with, and i remembered all the reasons why i decided on this surgery in the first place. And just so i remember the next time i get down, or slip up, here are my top 4: 1. I do not want diabetes, heart disease or cancer. These are obviously awful diseases, and if i can prevent them from happening to me, who cares what some uninformed, presumptuous, judgemental people have to say about it. 2. I do not want to be ashamed of my body. I used to be alot more social, have more friends, and get out more. Now i don't because a) i can never find anything comfortable but trackies to wear and all my friends are so damn well dressed. And walking to my car puffs me out, let alone going dancing or hiking, and my friends are all too little to carry me around just so i can continue a basic conversation. 3. I am fat, my parents are fat, my partner is fat, hell even my cat is on the chubby side. Someone has to break this pattern. If i want happy healthy kids, i can't give them a role model who can't even get to the train without panting. And just maybe, if i can do this, then so can the rest of my family. 4. I want to get more out of my life It sounds very cliched, but i've realised my world is much smaller than it was 8 years ago. Expand horizons expand! My top three goals for my weight loss are: 1. Get back on a horse (you have to be under 100 kgs to do this or its considered animal cruelty - suffering my riding skill is enough) 2. Buy some leather pants. (I'm not sure i need to explain the wish to have a seriously sexy piece of clothing to anyone who is obese) 3. Wear said pants and go walking by aforementioned asshats in all my sexy glory. I know this is vain, and admittedly not a very healthy reason for weight loss, but i'm trying to be honest with you here and who hasn't wanted to put those people in their place? Well. Now that i have put all these things into writing, i am feeling much more sure of my decision and much more confident in my ability to get to those goals. Truly, if you are feeling unsure about your mind and your decisions, i can't think of a better thing to do than write it all down. I will keep you posted as to my progress - hopefully by then someone other than myself will be aware this blog is on here (although this is a pretty big site). Wish me luck! - Jess

Day 10 - Seeing the results

I’m 5kg lighter and have a difference of about 10cm over different parts of my body. Feeling amazing!! Only 10 days into optifast and really seeing and feeing the results. I have noticed I’m actually eating/drinking (still Optifast) a lot more than I use to but I think the main thing was my close to 1.5L a day Coke-a-Cola habit and Double Shot Iced Coffee in the morning made my sugar intake massively high. By just cutting those out it is doing wonders for my body. I have been trying to figure out ways to keep on track and I know a lot of people find that hard or get hunger pains and the like after the surgery (and I guess before as well). I’m not sure if this will help anyone else but what I have been doing: Taking 1h to finish my Breakfast Optifast Shake, drinking small mouthfuls and waiting 5-10mins before the next one. Drink 1 L of water between Breakfast and Lunch Taking 1h to finish my Lunch Optifast Shake, drinking small mouthfuls and waiting 5-10mins before the next one. After I finish lunch Optifast wait 30mins and then have my piece of fruit. Same process small bites chewed very well. Once I am half way thought I stop and say in my head ‘I AM FULL’ to myself 20 times. Drink 1 L of water between Lunch and my drive home from work Drink 1 L of water between 5:30 and 6:30 and start preparing dinner. Take as long as I can to prepare dinner, slowing cutting the veg, making the plate/bowl look nice (kind of do like a Huey style, and wipe the plate down after I have dished my food) Eat dinner in exaggerated and slow chews. Once I have eaten about half my bowl/plate I stop put down my cutlery and say “I AM FULL†again 20 times. Then resume eating. Finish eating and then clean the kitchen straight away, grab another 1L of water and then turn the kitchen light off and do not enter it again for the rest of the night. I have been finding that I’m not hungry even thought I know I could eat a hell of a lot more, and yes there have been some cravings especially for Nachos or in the last few day something really cheesy but I have not broken yet, and really hoping that I don’t crack and eat like I know I could. One of the key things I have found is getting a smaller amount of food but better quality, before I would by home brand because it was cheap and get more of it. Now I’m looking at the food and saying “well I’m going to enjoy this 100g of rump steak rather than getting 400g sandwich steakâ€. I’m still paying the same amount of money but now I think I’m enjoying food rather than eating because I can. Hopefully I don’t sound like I’m preaching because I totally don’t want to sound like that, I know from a lot of my own inner thought and talking to friends that my brain works a little different (the psychologist at BIM said I’m not crazy… really I’m not …. just do a lot of things unconsciously, then realise later that I was already preparing for something because part of me had already made up my mind). I know that I made up the decision that Lap Band was my only option, once I booked the surgery everything I had been doing in the last month had started making sense and that anything I do in the work up to the Surgery IS going to work and for some reason when I tell myself something like ‘surgery is your only option’ then I probably would not be able to lose weight (large amounts that is) without it. Personally my main barrier is my brain. My journey is going to be a lot of MIND OVER MATTER but also find that urge to STOP and tell myself NO and that I do not need what my brain is telling me I want. It’s defiantly NOT easy and I really do miss some of my food but meh!! What would I rather be Fat, unhealthy and eating what I want when I want or Healthy, slim and happy eating good food and enough to keep me going? Answer: Defiantly the 2nd one

    Day 1 to new me!

Hey All My name is Katie G, I'm 26, married no children, live in Quinns Rocks WA and am very overweight. I currently weigh a massive 145kg!! I have always been on the larger starting from when I was 13. I have been the same height, 5’9, since I was 12 therefore always been large not only height but also weight. I was also very active back then swimming, ice skating and surf lifesaving. I know why and when I starting putting on weight, it was about when I was 16, I stopped swimming and ice skating and continued to eat like someone who was doing 3h exercise a day. In the last 4 years, however, I have put on the most weight, over 45kg. I think mainly this was due to a job change where I am now at a desk in front of a computer as well as on the phone all day. Very little movement for 8 hours where before this job I was up and down 3 flights of stairs at least 20 times as well as on my feet moving around. It could also be to do with getting married as apparently everyone puts on some weight but I think mainly the job is at fault. At the moment I cannot exercise. The pain I feel in my feet, ankles and knees as well as sometimes in my back is shocking. The sweating also stops me from pushing too far, I can walk up stairs and around the shops but not without sweating, I really don’t enjoy thinking that people around me not only see a ‘fat chick’ but a ‘stinky fat chick’. The decision to have Lap Band has been tough for me as I have always thought of it as cheating. However now that I have read into it and spoke to my GP, Surgeon and the Dietician I know that it is actually a lot of hard work. I have always been determined to lose the weight on my own and I have tried what feels like a million things. (Light and Easy, Duramine, Optifast, Body Trim, Gym membership with personal trainer, personalized meal plan … should I go on??). This surgery is my last resort, my blood pressure is 150/120 on a good day even higher on a bad day, stroke or heart attack at 25 is not something I ever thought I would have to worry about. I’m relieved to say my family, husband and work colleagues have all been really supportive. Even my boss said he was starting to worry that he might lose me if I didn’t take this step (my workplace is a 2nd family, it’s a great environment to work with great people and I think of the boys as my brothers). With a great support team at home, support from this website and my own determination I’m going to become half myself, the half I have always meant to be and hopefully become happy, fit and a mother in the near future. PS. Started Optifast pre-op today and gosh I’m struggling to keep it down, onto my second shake of the day and the taste is not great. I assume (and am trying to believe with all my will power) that after 2 weeks I will think that it is the best stuff ever, especially if I see some weight starting to fall off. *Fingers Crossed*

i thought that i would get a bit prepared and go buy a few samples to test which flavbours i like before i actually start my pre -op ..... was so cranky to find that you can not buy single samples of optislim..... but the chemist i went to showed me these products isowhey ---strawberries and cream, double chocolate, banana smoothie and french vanilla. they are equal and even slightly lower than the optifast .... so i thought i would take them along to the dietician in a couple of weeks for my first appointment and see what they say .... all the ladies in there said they are much nicer than optifast ...... so has anybody tried these?
  13. So I'm 13 days to surgery and things are plodding along as always, but yesterday I officially began the nightmarish fortnight that I imagine all bandits reflect on and shudder. Yes ladies and gentleman, I'm talking about the pre-op optifast 'experience'. Now being the nervous nelly that I am, I've been doing my research with great enthusiasm, and the pre-op diet was not an exception. I went out and bought a blender, knowing that not only would I need it for mushies, but it would make the shakes taste better. I made plenty of ice and ensured my water filter jug was full and chilled in the fridge. I went to the fruit and veg markets and stocked up on fresh veggies and since I'm allowed meat each night, I bought lean beef, pork, chicken and fish and froze it in 150g parcels. I was as prepared as I could be and I somewhat naievely thought "yeah, I'm gonna ace these two weeks!" Oh how wrong I was. Firstly, I didn't think about the fact that drinking the shakes would not be an enjoyable or satisfying experience. Obviously I thought about which shakes I would prefer the flavour of and how to make them so that they taste the best, but I didn't think about the fact that drinking mostly liquids is quite different to eating solid food. I have a shake and feel like 'was that a meal?' Secondly, that optifast chicken soup is awful. I tried to add things to it to make it taste better but I couldn't handle it. So there's a rather expensive box of foul tasting soup sitting in my kitchen and I don't know what to do with it. Thirdly, the optifast headaches are real...I didn't think they would happen but sure enough, yesterday afternoon the headaches began. Ive upped my water intake and keep telling myself they will go away in a few days. And finally, the hunger pains are just plain annoying. My stomach never feels quite full and an hour or two after a meal, the empty feeling comes back in full force! However, I believe there is a reason for everything and we can always find a positive spin so here are my positives so far: *I like the optifast choc berry cruch bars...yummy! *I have never enjoyed my veggies more and the meat I get to have with dinner is pure bliss! *Every shake I have gets me closer to my operation. *The hunger feelings mean that I can get used to my hunger singals for once I'm banded. *I'm getting myself used to a liquid diet which I will need for post-op. *I'm being forced to be very creative with what I can and can't cook for meals. So optifast might be awful, but I figure if I can get through this, I'll get through just about anything!
