  1. Hi Everyone I was admitted to hospital at midday yesterday for my band removal and everything went well. The surgeon told me I was only needed in hospital overnight for observation so I was expecting to go home the next morning. He didn't see me in the recovery room and I sat in my bed all morning the next day waiting for him to turn up and discharge me whilst everyone else around me went home, but he was a no show. To make matters worse, the hospital staff would not give me any water or food as the surgeon had left nil by mouth instructions until he could see me. This wouldn't have been a problem if he had shown up in the morning like he was expected to, but after having tubes down my throat I wanted nothing more than some ice or water which the nursing staff were unwilling to give because he is very demanding and particular. I called his rooms from my bed and asked his ETA only to be informed that he has a full day of consultations booked and will visit mid to late evening. This really got on my nerves because he did the same thing to me 12 years ago when he put the lap band in, left me waiting a day longer than needed. I specifically told him when I went back to him about my issue with him doing that and set the expectation that he would discharge me immediately if there was no reason to keep me. Despite this, he chose to spend a day in his rooms collecting consultation fees as opposed to visiting his post-operative clients. The outcome is that I discharged myself at midday without seeing him and am now at home. I'm furious and am seriously considering cancelling my sleeve surgery in February and going with a different surgeon. Are my expectations too high?
  2. I'm sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find it... Has anyone got tips for the excess skin after weight loss? I know there is no miracle way to get rid of it, but is there some way to help reduce it prior to getting surgery? Totally off subject, but am I weird to be excited at the prospect of being able to bathe better after weight loss?

13 Oct is the big day

After years of thinking about weight loss, struggling with health issues in additional to gradual weigh gain - I've booked in for gastric sleeve with Dr Victor Leiw this week. Part of the reassurance that this is what I need has been the online stories people have shared, as well meeting/knowing a dozen others in the last 12mths whom have had positive outcomes from being sleeved. Two months ago I was 183k, after several weeks on pre-op I'm 170k. Let's see what the future brings... Wish me luck.

    Exercise Scientist?

Hello, I had my surgery 2.5 years ago and started at 100 kilos and am currently down to 64 kilos. I lost 95% of my weight within the first 12 months. I would love to get to 60 kilos but I have been unable to lose anymore weight. My excercise of choice was jogging, which was great, however it has left me with little muscle tone. I wanted to ask if anyone knows a Exercise Physioligist or Exercise Scientist that can give you advice on the best exercise for your body and see if my body shape will allow me to lose any more weight and tone muscle or if surgery to remove excess skin is my only option left? I have tried personal trainers, but they dont know enough about body physiology etc. I read that cardio does not necessarily help some people and that they are better doing weight training to lose weight. I would be keen to discuss with an expert. Do you have any recommendations? Or similiar situation? Thanks

Going from a lap band to a sleeve

Hi everyone! My name is Leigh, I'm 33, live in Sydney (originally from good ol' Brissy!) and I have been searching around for a lap band/sleeve forum so I'm glad I found one. I got my lap band back in December 2006 when I weighed 150kgs and was only 24yrs old. I worked in health insurance at the time and had done my homework extensively however there was a lack of support, no FB groups or forums to talk with other patients. I knew I wanted something that was reversible though. I lost about 17kgs initially and was pleased with how I was managing things. I flatlined with my weight loss (lack of exercise, no band tightening, lack of motivation) at about the 130-135kg mark and that is where I stayed for several years. Then about 4 years ago, I started a new job where they had just started a weight loss challenge. I'm competitive with a lot of things, but weight loss has never been one of them. I got on board though, and with several band tightenings, I smashed through 20kgs in 3 months (won the challenge!!), and then continued to lose after that. I got down to 104kgs and was feeling fabulous! Not long after I was made redundant and changed jobs which was extremely stressful as my partner had just quit his job to study while I supported the both of us. During the previous 2 or so years I had extremely bad reflux and was coughing excessively at night that I could never sleep and would throw up saliva constantly. During the day I was fine and wouldn't throw up food as I have always known my limit and have lived with my lap band for years. Underlining all of that I was severely anaemic, unaware to me. So out of sheer frustration with my surgeon not helping me, I got a referral to another surgeon. He told me my band should have never been as tight as it was, which was causing the reflux and the coughing and he released it. Overnight, I slept! It was a miracle. The motivation was still there to lose weight however with a stressful job change, I put on a few kgs, and my mindset went from being motivated to feeling defeated. In the last 2 years I have put on all of the weight I had lost and I got up to 152.5kgs. When I was 104kgs, I had thrown out all of my fat clothes because I was never going back to that, but as I put weight on, I had to buy clothes again. I have about 6 massive bags of 'skinny' clothes just waiting to be worn again. So, a bit over 12 months ago I increased my health insurance and booked in to get the gastric sleeve done. With preparation for my surgery I have lost 3.9kgs in the last week (I can feel that old motivation coming back again!). I'm scheduled to have my lap band removed on the 24th September (next week!) and get the gastric sleeve on the 23rd November. I've had several acquaintances, an old neighbour and old colleagues also get the sleeve and while watching them as my guinea pigs, my test subjects, lol, that this is the right decision for me. I'm not nervous, or anxious, since I've gone through the surgery before, I just want it to hurry up! I look forward to sharing my journey with you all and learning some things from you too! Below are some photos from my journey over these years. I will start my photo tracking again just before I go into surgery next week. This was the tracking I did during my weight loss challenge at my old job. I could tell my moles on my stomach were getting closer, you could see my ears better and my stomach was rising very quickly! These shorts are a size 26. Sadly, I am sitting in them right now as I type this, and they are fitting me very well. I loved using these shorts as an indicator of my weight loss. And you can see the fat clothes I was putting in bags to give to charity! I miss doing fun runs (walks!), million paws walk etc because of my weight gain. So as a motivator I have pulled out the calendar for the next 12 months and marked all the events I would like to attend. Here I am at my lightest at 104kgs, with a bulky jacket on lol...AND I was fitting into skinny jeans. This is my motivation photo!
  6. I had the band placed two days ago yet I am not really feeling any restriction. I expected that I would especially considering the swelling. I can get water and other liquids down really easily, I haven't and wont be trying anything pureed or solid until it is time but it feels as though I could. Has anyone else had this experience? I know it is still early days but I'd feel better knowing if others had gone through this too.

    Keeping it secret.

Hello everyone, My lap band surgery is booked for January 7 2015 with Professor Paul O'Brien. I am having a friend take me to the hospital and pick me up once I'm all finished. I haven't told anyone about the surgery except my father, who lives overseas, and am reluctant to tell my friend the real reason I am getting surgery... Do you think it will be possible to get in and out of the hospital without my friend finding out I'm having lap band surgery? I know how silly this sounds, that I should just be happy I am finally getting the surgery and not keep secrets. However, having been judged for years about my weight, I don't really want to be judged for having weight loss surgery. What are everyone else's thoughts and experiences? Thank you.
  8. Hi All, I've just been given a date (3 September - YAY!) and now I have to organise for some support for the hospital and post-hospital time. I have a 3 yo so will need someone to look after her during the days (husband can't take time off) and expect I'll need some help too. I'd really appreciate some ideas about what to expect in terms of your experience of recovery and what was possible when. Doctors can tell you what they think, but you guys are the ones who've actually lived through it. Thanks in anticipation, RJ
  9. 5 weeks today since surgery and I feel great! I have now lost 15.3kgs and am now walking 5 kms every day!! 3 in the morning and 2 in the arvo and I am extremely proud of myself for that!!! I'm Banded !

Here's my banding story because over the last few months I've enjoyed reading other peoples stories and they've helped to make my experience easier. I got into the hospital (The Alfred Centre), with my sister, at 12noon. We only waited a minute or two before I was called in to start the process ... booking in, anaesthetist, pharmacist, nurse, weighed, changed into highly fashionable gown, booties and cap, and then to the theatre waiting room. A little before 1pm a lovely nurse came and took me to theatre. I was very nervous and barely holding myself together and all the staff were so patient with me. (I've previously had some bad experiences with surgery ... in particular a gall bladder operation that started out keyhole and ended up as major open surgery. My biggest fear going into this was that they'd have to convert to open surgery.) I feel very out of control when I have to lay down, and I had so many people buzzing around me ... nurse, 2 anaesthetists, surgeon ... so I told them I was feeling very out of control and the nurse gave me a tube and told me to squeeze it, which I did, and asked why. He told me, "Now you have something you're in control of." He was so lovely. The anaesthetist had 2 goes at getting a drip into my hand and it just wasn't working and I began to feel very overwhelmed so I asked if they could all just stop what they were doing for a minute so I could get myself together. They obliged and were all so lovely. In the end the anaesthetist ended up putting the drip in the inside of my elbow (where you get a blood test done) and then once I was under she put another drip in my other hand and another cannula to monitor my blood pressure. I was also very apprehensive about the oxygen mask as prior to a previous surgery when they put the mask on my face it wasn't turned on and I couldn't breathe at all. I told the nurse this so he very kindly blew the oxygen on my neck before he put the mask over my face to reassure me that it was turned on. I can't be grateful enough to all those theatre staff for how patient and understanding they were with me. I was out of surgery at 3:30pm and awake by about 4pm. I was in a lot of pain but just normal surgical pain so I knew they'd managed to do it all keyhole. I was so relieved. They gave me oxycontin through my drip and topped it up about 6 times before I had optimal pain relief. I was still in pretty bad pain but there's only so much they can do as I'm very sensitive to the side effects of a lot of medications. I was grateful to have no nausea at all. They gave me some concoction of about 4 different anti-nausea medications. My blood pressure was a little low in recovery but went up to be quite high once I got onto the ward at about 5pm. It came back down by about midnight. They said it was just because of the pain. They also gave me one anti-coagulant injection whilst I was under the anaesthetic too. I had some wound pain (3 small wounds, one larger one for the port), but the worst pain was from the gas ... my left shoulder, all around my chest and it felt like someone had poured broken glass down my spinal column. I found the pain moved around as I changed positions ... it seemed to find the highest point. I spent the night alternating from laying on my left side to my right side and a little time on my back. I found that if I was patient and just rode the pain out each time I changed positions, if I stayed still the pain completely subsided and I was able to sleep for an hour at a time. I was up and walking around only about an hour or so after getting back to the ward cause I was desperate to wee and once I started was up every couple of hours. Because I was up and down so much I didn't need anymore anti-coagulant injections and it really helped with the pain. I was up, again, around 11pm, and as I bent over I let out an enormous burp, then another 2, and within minutes my back/chest/shoulder pain had halved and I was much more comfortable. I still have a little shoulder pain now but it's more just discomfort. (It's 8:30pm the following day.) I've been taking panadol and endone for pain relief and will continue the panadol but probably only take 1 endone before bed and see if I can manage on just panadol tomorrow. The wound pain is quite minimal now and I was even able to lay flat on my tummy earlier when I had a nap. My dinner last night was a little black tea and chicken noodle soup without noodles (my sister called it chicken water). Then over the next 6 hours I determinedly managed to get a small apple juice and small orange jelly into me and they tasted like heaven. I don't have any stitches ... just steri-strips and have to see my GP in a week to have the dressings changed. Then back to the clinic a week after that, then a check up with the surgeon 2 weeks after that. The surgeon today told me I have a small amount of fill in the band. I'm not feeling any restriction but I've been sipping very slowly and it's only fluids. I'm not at all hungry but have managed to follow the menu guidelines my dietician gave me. (Juice for breakfast, a small skinny chai latte on drive home, milk thinned pumpkin soup for lunch, yogurt milk for afternoon tea, and more soup for dinner.) Oh ... one last thing ... immediately after the surgery, after every single sip of fluid I had, after a few seconds my tummy was cramping for a second or two. Not badly but enough for me to notice. The nurse said it was normal and it's settled down now.

    1st Consultation coming up

Hi everyone, I have just joined the site. Have been considering lapband on and off for years and have finally booked in a consultation coming up in 2 weeks. I am so nervous and scared, and even though i'm so desperate to finally win the weight battle, i'm still not too sure if I will go through with it. I am at my biggest ever of 145kgs, and find it hard to even walk to Coles at the end of my street. Would love to hear your thoughts, and what you found the biggest struggles. Anxiously seeking guidance.

    5 days post-op

Well! Today i am 5 days post-op. So far i've lost 6.5kgs in total. I had my surgery tuesday afternoon with Dr Ian Michell and his team at Essendon Private. The hospital was lovely, my night nurse was absolutely fantastic, and i left wednesday afternoon with no complications. I haven't really had any issues so far. I'm eating soup recipes from the Knife, Fork, Band book which are great, really satisfying for savory and meaty flavours without being disgusting. Pain wise, i haven't really had much of an issue. I had my tonsils out at the beginning of the year and that was much worse than the pain levels i've had with the band. They gave me anti-inflams and endone when i left the hosp, but i haven't needed the endone, and ive just been taking panadol as my team suggested. The worst pain i've been in was due to gas or overeating. Its taken a while to learn that at this point, even tea counts as a meal, so you cant have a tea ontop of soup!!! Showering, driving, sitting are all fine, the only thing that im still not ok with is sleeping on my side (which is unfortunate as im a side sleeper!) and this is ok if i prop myself up with pillows and such now. Well thats it for now, ill update again when i get back to work next week! Any questions please let me know. - Jess
  13. Hi everyone, I have my appointment with my doctor on Monday to discuss my weightless options. I am 19 and have PCOS and am 120kg (170cm). He seems pro-nasal sprays and less invasive techniques but I've done my research, and with my illness (which results in a lifetime of chronic obesity) I am really keen to get this surgery. So can anyone help me on what to say to my doctor and share your past experiences visiting your GP for the first time to enquire about the surgery? I'm just worried the doctor won't take my decision to seriously and shrug it off. Thanks & love, Jo

    Can I get the surgery?

Hi everyone, My name is Joanne and I am considering getting the Gastric lap banding surgery. I'm just on here asking around to hear other peoples stories after they got their surgery and just wanting to know how to go about asking my GP for it. So before that just a little about myself: I'm 19 years old and I live in Australia. I am 125kg and 5"5' (170cm). I've been overweight all my life, pretty much can't remember ever being a healthy weight. I am newly diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and that pretty much set off my want to have this surgery. Having PCOS pretty much puts me at risk at developing diabetes (actually, I'm going to get it eventually) and heart attacks (7 time more likely). It also signs me up to a lifetime of chronic obesity and depression. A year ago, I was in a really bad place and I was constantly depressed and had terrible anxiety. I couldn't get out of bed and gained 10kg. I hated myself and hated my body and I self harmed to take my anger out against it. This all happened because my education, family and social life were all directly affected by my obesity. I have no relationship with my father because he's ashamed of my weight and has constantly criticised me since I was 12 about it, I was placed on Academic Warning at university because I didn't want to attend class as I thought I was getting judged. And my emotional and physical health was deteriorating. It was just hell. Long story short; my mom came back and started to live with my, and I guess it really helped a bit and I have got some confidence and routine back in my life. I'm much happier. So back on topic - I really would like to get the surgery and I would like to know if you guys think I'm eligible for it and tell me how yours are going. Also, how do I go about asking my GP for it? Sorry for the long post, hope someone can reply. Thanks & love, Jo x
  15. The big day is only 9 days away now and I've gone from excited to terrified and nervous. for 8 long months I was wishing the day would get here sooner and now it's almost here I'm like SLOW DOWN. I can't wait to start my banding journey but now it's so close its finally hit me...I'm having SURGERY. anyone else have crazy dreams and get ultra scared and worried before surgery day? I'm not even sure what I'm most scared of :/
  16. I am seriously considering having the band done but I have a few questions. Firstly how long was your hospital stay and how soon did you return to work? Were you able to resume your normal work duties without much grief? My next question is being a secret bandit. My family especially my sister think the band is for cheats....I totally disagree. Whilst I've tried to explain to her that it is a tool to help with weight loss it certainly won't be a walk in the park. Her argument is exercise and watching what you eat will achieve the same results(she has lost about 25kgs herself this way). Anyway she has her opinion and I have mine. Is it possible to be a secret bandit...and if you are how did you go about it? Thanks in advance
  17. Well it's four days out from my surgery and I'm feeling terrible. I wasn't sure who else to talk to because I didn't want the wrong people hearing my complaints so please forgive me as I indulge in a bit of self-pity. I'm currently off work because I suffer from Anxiety and Depression and my work agrrivated my previously manageable condition to the point where I had a co mplete mental breakdown earlier this year. I put in a claim for work cover because the breakdown was caused by my work and also means I am unable to work. I have spent months going to appointments and having huge phone conversations with doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, rehabilitation counsellors and case managers, have been put on various medications and undergone other treatments, all while suffering with debilitating anxiety and depression, which also caused a slight case of agorophobia which meant I could barely leave my house and sometimes couldn't even get out of bed. Finally, about a month ago, my claim was accepted. For the first time I felt like I was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief and focus on healing and becoming a normal functioning member of society again. My decision to be banded was part of my healing process because I knew that if I was healthier physically it would help me to become healthier mentally. However, today I recieved a letter from the Workers Compensation Tribunal informing me that my employer has filed a notice of dispute and I have to fill out forms, look into legal representation etc. Naturally, I completely broke down, had a massive anxiety attack and just about threw up all my optifast. When I managed to calm down, I called my case manager who assured me that this often hapens, it can take months and not to worry just yet (too late!) because nothing will change until such time as the tribunal decides my claim should be rejected, if they make that decision. Well that's all fine and well, and I realise that they have protocol to follow, but did nobody think that dropping a bomb like that in the lap of a person suffering with mental illness might cause some problems? Add to this the fact that I've just yesterday organised to have a metting with my work about going back 10 hours a week next month once I've recovered and now I don't think I could handle being with those people in that environment. And all of this only 4 days before I'm supposed go on the operating table. I am so determined to have this surgery but I'm also now really worried that the sudden drop in my mental state is going cause problems for my recovery. This is supposed to be an exciting, life changing event and now I just feel like complete rubbish! And I feel guilty about my surgery too because how am I supposed to pay for a solicitor when I've just spent over $3000 on wls and doctors bills? Rant over...sorry to dump that on you guys but I'm just so upset and to be perfectly honest I can't believe I haven't just run out to buy a block of chocolate which is something I used to always used to do to try and deal with my anxiety and depression in the past. Very tempted to just order pizza for dinner but I know that's not going to make things better. I was so happy when I woke up this morning
  18. So I would love to pull on everyones wealth of excperience and ask what has helped you along the way? Apps/weight loss tracking techniques? Scales? Portion plates? Cook books? Vitamins? Blenders and other utensils? What did you take to hospital? Have you tried something and found it useless? I am excited to hear what has worked and what hasnt. Thank you
  19. Just heard a friend had (non WLS) surgery cancelled due to the recent nurse's industrial action. I know there's not many cancellations, and don't have an issue with their protest... but not doing it now will cause me MAJOR problems and I will need to do a heap to cope with it. Has anyone else had lab-band surgery cancelled for this reason?

    Surgery After Banding

Just wondering if anyone has had to have a tummy tuck after losing weight with the band? If so how much was it? How long after being banded did you wait? Did you first try to get rid of it with excercise? And did it hurt? Thanks for sharing

    Introductions

So I am about to write my first Blog...just to get it all out there. I have been banded for 5 weeks today and feeling pretty damned good:) I will start off with a little background info and then back pedal to my initial decision to have the Surgery, having the op and the initiial recovery. I have battled with my weight since around the age of 22. Before this time I was very slim and healthy. A possessive, perfection obsessed husband put an end to that. In a nutshell I was bullied and manipulated (for my entire marriage of 8 years) about what I was eating, how I looked, how much I weighed, how fat I was..an endless barrage that never let up. I guess in a fit of leave-me-alone-itis I ate. I ate to push him away, I put on weight almost deliberately to make him leave me alone. The fatter I became the more disgusted he became. The sly comments were constant. It is amazing the verbal & psychological abuse we will put up with when it is someone we "think" we love. Well this little black duck ended it (the marriage that is) BUT the weight problems remained. I have spent around 30 years fluctuating-up & down, back & forth. I have lost and regained the same kilos many, many times. Some time in early November (2010) I read about the Obera System and was instantly intrigued. I researched the thing for days and finally went to see my lovely GP for a referral. He was quite frank and said he did not have one patient who had the ball fitted and really knew very little about it, but armed with a referral to discuss the system with the Surgeon off I went. The Obera Ball is (for those who do not know) is a medically placed intragastric (inside the stomach) balloon. Now this appealed to me. No cuts, no surgery and it only remains inside your tummy for 6 months. The weight would fall off because I would feel full all the time-Yipee-this was it, what I had been looking for-EUREKA!! Armed to the teeth I phoned and made an appointment to see the Surgeon-determined to have the Orbera System ASAP. Now what do they say about the best laid plans?
