    Accountability

I was sleeved 23 months ago (i.e. nearly two years ago). Admittedly, I was very sick last year with a gut infection (Campylobacter), and dropped down to a BMI of 18.5, and 18% body fat. O.K; so here I am going to be honest and accountable. Since that gut infection has been treated, my weight has gradually increased ... particularly in the last couple of months... Yes. Alcohol. Low-carb beer ... Gin and diet tonic (so helpful for getting me through doing housework!!). I, probably like most folk, have had some carb-binges over the last month. A couple of days of eating nothing but "Grainwave" chips ... And an outstanding 2.25 kg of (Chinese) dumplings in the last two days. I have had horrendous health/energy problems last year, and haven't been active (chronic ME/CFIDS + Fibromyalgia etc. and I had really deteriorated health-wise) But this last week there has been an improvement. Today I "sucked it up" and weighed myself (after going to the loo, on an empty stomach etc). I have managed (!) to put on 3.13 kg in less than four weeks. Body fat increase of 3.6% ... And I can feel it. My arms feel like sausages bursting out of their skins, and my thighs are rubbing. My boobs are bursting out of my bra. I have jumped up a couple of clothing sizes. I had got down to a size 4/6 (I am only 5" tall - about 153 cm), and am now busting out of size 8. So. This is it. I have started this new thread, called "Accountability". 1. I am going to be more diligent to weigh myself more frequently. 2. Bye-bye low carb beer. 3. Move more. 4. Update my details and progress.5. Get to see dentist to have sensitive teeth treated ... this has been preventing me from "20, 20, 20". Numerologically, for me this is a "power year". So it is up to me to make the most of it.
  2. It's been over 6 years since I had the lapband surgery. I lost over 85 kilograms, but every year I end up gaining some weight, then working a few months to lose the excess weight gained. It seems, to me, maintaining one's weight after huge amounts of weight loss is a lot harder than the initial weight loss itself. If you have reached the point I have, you already know what I mean. I've been working at an English newspaper in Turkey and have decided to write a weekly column on my current battle/challenge to lose the approximately 10 kilograms I gained during autumn-winter (it's almost spring here now). So if you would like to follow my weekly column or even share your own personal experiences, please, click away to my article: http://www.dailysabah.com/health/2016/02/22/spring-is-nigh-its-time-to-lose-weight# Wishing you all the best in your efforts to reach your goals. Luv, Gee.
  3. Ok so I am 3 days post op and feeling pretty decent pain wise - my dr was right this is nothing like having the band placed I am feeling pretty fine already. Except for the weight gain. I have been all drugged up and sleeping erratically so I have been eating erratically too but I don't know where I am at. The scales have clearly gone up a couple of kgs - part of that would be attributed to my binge eating leading up to the surgery. I am totally unsure what eating normal looks like now. I mean I do realistically but I haven't been eating regaulary breakfast, lunch and dinner so I don't know how much I am over eating or what. I am still craving sweets and junk which has been my biggest failure. I am booked in for the sleeve 27th Jan, and I sort of told myself it was ok if I put on some weight but as long as I don't go over 100kg which I have gone up to already. I am terrified of what I am capable of between now and then. It's like all my willpower has completely evaporated. I imagine just by having e band out and eating more I am likely to gain. Even if I am eating what is considered a normal amount...us WLS people are different I guess. I will talk more to my dr when I see him for a follow up in weeks, I obviously did not ask enough questions. I am thinking of trying to do lite n easy for some of the time to manage my eating a little. I only want to get 5 days breakfast, lunch and dinner. I am hoping this will help. I can't really afford it but if it is going to help me have a better control on what I am putting in my mouth then it is going to be worth it.
  4. I posted awhile ago now about making the decision to go from a band to a sleeve. I only had the band placed at the beginning of May, but I am so ready to have it out. When it was working well it felt too tight and even with the tiniest amount out I am hungry all the time. I don't feel I made the right choice. I am so pro weight loss surgery though. I know most people feel as though a bypass is extreme and everyone says don't do it but honestly if I could that is what I want. But my surgeon is going to do the sleeve for me. I am getting the band out 18th Nov, so only a couple of weeks to go. I am really hoping that I have more success with the sleeve - I am really looking forward to eating certain things again - mostly healthy things too. I am absolutely shit scared about the time in between band removal and the sleeve surgery which I am going to push for early Feb. I had lost 18kg (93kg) but I seem to be bouncing back up as I am at 96kg now (15kg lost). And I haven't even had the band removed yet! My whole health at the moment has been really shit. I have basically stopped exercising and have been eating a lot of shit foods (why is it so easy to eat junk?!). So I know exactly why I have put weight back on. It's like I can even get the motivation to try at the moment. I keep trying to work myself up to it but I haven't succeeded, yet! However, I have recurrent major depression and that has been spiraling the last month or so...I know the impact that has...but I keep trying to push through, and the psychiatrist and I are swapping and adding different medications so we will get there eventually. I remain hopeful, and I probably depend to much on the idea that weight loss surgery is going to be it for me. But inside I know that it is a tool to utilise and you only get out what you put in. As the sleeve surgery gets closer I will need to get as much support as I can to make the most of this opportunity. It works if you work it.
  5. Hi Everyone, So I'd like to think I'm not alone here, but over the past year due to several issues arising and having to have surgery. I had to get my band loosened and have gone from being 80kg back to 90kg.... 10 KG GAIN... !!! So fricking dissapointed. Well as of tomorrow I am finally getting a fill. I have felt like I haven't had a lapband for the past 6 months and have realised how much I needed it in the first place. I am going to be asking the surgeon to put at least 1.5-2ml in tomorrow I know this is going to seem like a lot but considering I feel like I don't even have a band I'd rather go tight and resort back to liquids for a few weeks. Has anyone every had this happen? How did you recover / get back on track and reach goal... My sister is getting married in January. Mostly I'd like to shed the extra weight by Xmas though, so I've re-joined the Gym and have a personal Trainer on Mondays, Body Pump Wed and cardio/weights Fri. Also when I can I will ride my bike to work and walk everywhere possible... May be a little difficult as my 3 year old has just broken his shin last weekend but am trying everything in my power. If anyone has any advise please share Thank you in advance xx
  6. Hi all, I am new to this page and am enjoying reading all your posts. I only recently got private health cover so I am unable to use it for the opp, however I can use it in the future If something goes wrong. I am just about to lodge my papers for early release of super in order to pay for this procedure. I estimated that I should have an answer in about 3-4 weeks. If my application is rejected, I'm going to be devastated so I'm not going to think about that right now. My surgeon is Dr Skinner. I have heard only good things about him and at he is one of the only surgeons at The Centre of Bariatric Surgery that will do the procedure on self funding patients...........My first appointment with him was 2 weeks ago. He is very matter of fact and not very warm but thats ok. I'm not looking for a BBF, just someone that is going to do the procedure correctly and give me all the info I need. He seemed almost shy but very nice. Anyways, before researching the Lap Band, i was under the impression that once you lose, you cant gain again as you cant over eat! So I have joined groups, spoken to people and looked into it further and I have discovered that many people have gained atleast some of the weight back after they have lost. This is a concern to me as I can very successfully do this without the band! Since I was 4 years old I have been losing weight and gaining it all back again.......Does anyone have any tips as to how to help ensure this doesn't occur? Lisa

Could I Be Having a Crapper Week ?

I'm on day 8 of Optifast and have lost a grand total of 1.8kg. I actually put on .6kg yesterday. I've not cheated at all on this Optifast stage, I've been drinking heaps of fluids and yesterday was the first day I didn't go to the gym. (Had to see the physio.) This is half what I had set out to lose. I'm so disappointed and puzzled as to why this is happening. On top of this my boyfriend broke up with me on Tuesday and I'm an emotional non-eater so stuffing all this Optifast into my face has become a huge issue. I'd usually just not be eating at all other than maybe one small meal a day when I'm feeling like this. I still need to get one more Optifast and another cup of veges into me today and the thought of it is turning my stomach. I'm also back to not being able to sleep and spending the night riddled with anxiety. I laid in bed 'til noon today ... just paralysed with depression and apathy. I felt a little better after the gym but I'm feeling so overwhelmed by all I have to get done before I go in for the surgery next Thursday. Also, I've used up all my appointments on my care plan so can't see my psychologist until August. I found this out yesterday ... the day before I was meant to go see her. (and I really need it.) I had to cancel my appointment knowing I'm spiralling down and can't get professional help for another 6 months. Aren't I a little bundle of joy today ... lol.

    I'm an idiot!

I've been avoiding the forums because I have been a bad girl. After getting frustrated with being stuck on a plateau, I've adapted the old 'who cares what I do, it doesn't make any difference' mindset, and I've stopped going to the gym, started eating chocolate daily and drinking at least a few times a week and have gained 5 kgs. 5 KGS in like TWO WEEKS!!! I can't complain about the band, I can't eat much, and my meals are filling. I'm not physically hungry, I'm just eating my depression. AAAAARGH... I was aiming to lose a chunk of weight before my sister in laws wedding, and it is now 3 weeks away and I've gone in the wrong direction. I feel like crying I'm going to the shop this arvo and I'm going to buy some optifast and do opti for breakfast and lunch and have protein and veggies for dinner for the next 4 weeks or so to get back on track. Please tell me I'm not the only person who'se done this. I feel like a complete failure. My psychologist is on maternity leave until January, but I'm going to start some group therapy in the meantime to try and crawl out of this depression. I just can't believe it takes weeks and weeks and weeks to come off and goes back on in the blink of an eye! Freaking weight issues...

    food tracking

Over the last few days I have kept a food and exercise record on the my fitness pal app. For my weight and age I'm allowed 1700 calories a day, which is about right as i'm still breast feeding and thats an additional 500 calories a day, so if I stick to 1700 I should be losing weight. BUT, I have been gaining and losing the same 600 grams for the last 2 weeks. I'm shocked at how many calories im drinking each day without realising it! I drink tea and cordial, and i'm drinking over 400 cals in tea a day!! (white, 2 suger) The cordial is only 80 cals a day, I can live with that as I cant live with plain water I also have 1 - 2 shakes a day. They are a shake powder, with banana, berries, rolled oats and soy milk. I have been having this for about 4 months, the last few months of my pregnancy I couldnt keep much down so this was how I got my nutrition for the day. I never botherd to see how many calories they are, its healthy after all, but over 500 calories per shake! So, if I have 2 shakes and my tea each day, I have already blown through 1400 calories!! So now I am limiting my self to 2 cups of tea a day (sadly I have already reached my quota and its only 9am!) Not sure what I will do for the shakes, I have soup wich is 190 cals so I will have that at lunch, but breakfast is a harder one as I am not a toast/cereal person. Maybe if I use water instead of milk, and less oats/fruit, I can still have my very yummy shake for breakfast but save some calories. Hopefully on Sunday the scales will show some downward movement

    Oh no!

So back in August 2011 I had one port out completely and a new one put in. This resulted in major dramas with health fund (NIB) who stopped covering the band a few months earlier and as I had mine done when it was covered thought I was fine and "followup and maintenance" was supposed to be covered. NIB swore that a new port was not the same thing and refused payment. I had bills, harrassment (from the hospital not my doc) about the $3000+ owed. Eventually after my surgeon (via his nurse) sent letters off to NIB and phone calls to the hospital and letters again and long long phone calls from me NIB agreed to cover it. I swapped to HCF cos I was so pissed off at NIB. Of course HCF says they only offer continuity of cover for what was covered by NIB on date of transfer - so yes i have to serve 12 months wait time for any band related thing (HCF cover band, port etc but not til 12 months), ANyway at the doc yesterday - guess what - the bloody port has twisted. I have to go to back to surgery to get it fixed. Very quick he says - not a removal - just an untwist. I told him flatly I could not afford it - if he couldnt do it publically or for free I would have to wait for 12 months! Then he remembered that we had been talking these last several months about my gall bladder - xrays shows many large stones. He had recommended getting it removed as "ït is better to do it now with no bad pain as a fairly simple keyhole surgery and one night in hospital than wait til a sudden bad attack which is very painful and may result in bigger, longer surgery and longer recovery time". I had said I would think about it. He offered to do the gall bladder as a private patient and then do the port restitch whilst I was on the table but not document or claim for it (ie not get paid for it). I checked with my health fund and yes I am covered for that. So...I am going in to have the gall bladder removed on Mon 19th Dec at Epworth Richmond. At same time get the port untwisted. One night stay. I said yes - cos I want it done and also cos a) my son will be at school during that week so no need for child care and my husband starts hols the next day so can look after me and get son off to school and collected etc. By the weekend of that week and certainly following week (school hols and Christmas week) I should be feeling a lot better. Recovery 7-10 days but only first couple quite sore - after that not as bad - he says. I prefer all this than trying to squeeze out 10 days in the year (I work for myself and apart from Dec-Jan am busy all year with not more than a week spare here and there, mainly in school hols). On another note - 7 weeks earlier I was 107 kilos and hoping like mad to get under 100 kilos for Christmas. Imagine my shock - his scales showed 116 so I put on 9 kilos in 7 weeks NOT lost 7 kilos. This is the first time - since the initial surgery - that I not only havnt lost anything in one week (usually 1/4 kilo per week steadily over 18 months) but actually put it on. I feel the same, my clothes feel the same - but yes appetite has been bigger - and they havent adjusted the port for months so only at 4.5 (was at 6 which was a little too high). SO that is a bummer. Feeling low about it all actually. If you've read til the end - thanks - people STILL commenting on my weight loss and new look which is lovely yet I feel hateful towards self now at 116 when i was sooo proud of 107.
