Advise on band removal as I have anxiety

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

Hope everyone is well my journey hasn't been to good. Firstly when I had the band put in I had an anxiety attack in hospital just over a year ago. I've never had one before. I started loosing weight after that but had anxiety since on and off. Then Iast November I had a fill and whilst driving home I felt I couldn't breathe and ended up having a major panic attack and ended in hospital. Went to clinic and they removed all the fill. Since then I've been suffering with anxiety, every little change in my body I notice and stress about. I can't help but relate it the band, although I know it's not the only reason. This has changed my life completely... Now thinking of having my band removed, but that also makes me anxious. Anyone had it out and how did it go.. What's the recovery time, is it easier to have it out than in?

Any help will be grateful

i can't help with band removal etc, but would talking to a psychiatrist / psychologist help any before making the big decision of having it removed. i know a few people with anxiety and talking has really helped then, granted they dont have the band or any type of WLS so not sure.

i hope you can get it all sorted asap.

I'm told it is easier to have it removed as you don't need to go through all the eating phases, but I'd like to suggest that before making such a decision you see a psychologist.

I have a couple of friends who suffer from Anxiety disorders and there's always something that triggers the first panic attack.

In your case it seems to have been the gastric banding.

Perhaps discussing your fears and changes to your lifestyle may help you cope better?

I felt anxious about the idea of the band inside me so I opted for the sleeve, and have been fine. But I am the same about earrings, tattoos and cigarette smoke as well.

I suffer from severe anxiety, but I dont have attacks. I just struggle to do things cause it freaks me out.

I see a psych and would be crazy if I didn't. I have refused medication (which is not recommended) but there are safe medications out there that do help along side regular consultations. It really is a must. Removing the band might not fix the underlying problem.

I've also read it is an easier procedure to have the band removed. I would suggest seeing someone to talk to as removing the band may not take away the anxiety. Good luck

Thanks everyone. I also see a councillor. I've tried all the anxiety medication, unfortunately too many side effects. I struggle with the thoughts on the band daily. I seem it blame it. Also I know taking it out might not fix my problem... Anxiety is terrible

As others have said it is probably more important to deal with the anxiety. If you want to take the band out for other reasons absolutely go ahead but i have some knowledge in this field and I hate to say this but removing the band is highly unlikely to reduce the panic attacks. If the counsellor is not helping perhaps it is worth seeing a proper psychologist.

This website gives some good recommendations. Look for a clinical psychologist who specialised in CBT.

This free online program is also effective.

Good Luck
