Hi Annabelle, I think you'll find the only recommendation the docs will make is Optifast.

Google Optifast to get some prices, but the shakes are around $45 for a box of 21.

There are cheaper options available, but best to do what the doctor orders for your pre surgery preparation.

Thank you I was just looking at the chemist warehouse online and at the moment they have 2 boxes for $50 so that will be 42 drinks of optifast for $50

That's Optislim 2 for $50.00 not Optifast which is what is reccommended but I ended up alternating between the 2 Opti's after comparing what was in both. It's hard to find Optifast products cheap. I asked my dietician and she said they know Optifast has everything in it that we need but they hadn't looked into Optislim or other brands. Good luck with your journey :)  :D

I know 42 serves for $50 seems like an awful lot but considering that's 2 weeks worth and the only other food you'll need to buy will be a little fruit and some veges ... it's very likely going to work out cheaper than what you usually spend on food.

I personally have used amcal chemists own brand "be good to yourself" after looking at the nutrition panel it and opti were very similar, I took it to my surgeon just in case. I liked this option as it had pre-made shakes (in bottles) which were great when I had to go out of the door and a wide variety of bars available so I had something to chew. I found the opti that hubby bought (vanilla) for me was completely unpalatable unless I added frozen berries when blending it. In addition the amcal was a lot cheaper. I was told that any amount of leafy vegetables was fine and to avoid the starchy ones (dense in carbohydrates). I also got some diet jelly, but after a few days didn't really need it much.

When I looked at the optifast website it told me about ketosis (which is what this pre-op phase is about) and to achieve it I would have to have less than 800 calories per day so that my body would switch from getting energy from food to energy from stored body fat. It also said that it takes about three days on average to kick in (and hunger will be high) but when it does you won't be so hungry. It took me 4 days and I had a headache and nausea (along with hunger) until it finally kicked in.

I have not needed to buy optifast myself, the clinic supplied me with all that I needed for 2 weeks. The dietician suggested that we can drink it in the liquid phase also but mix with milk instead of water. Might buy some more for that, I don't mind the flavour.
