Dr Khaleal in Penrith, or someone better in western Sydney?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone used him in his Penrith or Fairfield rooms? I got his number from Dr Cregan's receptionist, as Cregan now doesn't do banding. I keep seeing these doctors in Baulkham Hills popping up everywhere. Maybe I should go to one of these instead? I keep thinking they will be a lot more after PHI though. I've got an appointment with Dr Khaleal for September 1 though. I'm so nervous!

Dr Khaleal put my band in, no complaints. I'm now sleeved with Dr Talbot and he is amazing. He took my band out and now sleeved me. A very talented and thorough surgeon.

Thank you for the replies. I'm so stressed about the whole thing. I don't know if a doctor a bit further away is going to be better for me? I'm glad to hear Dr Khaleal has got some positive reputation! Why did you get the sleeve, may I ask, JouJou? I think crows nest/north may be too far and too difficult to arrange transport to and from. It would take me about 2-3 hours to get there in the early morning from where I live, and being diabetic I'm usually first for surgery lists.

My band ended up causing me too many problems, with constant throwing up 4-5 times per week regardless how slow I ate, also I didn't hardly lose any weight as all the foods I couldn't tolerate were the good foods - protein, veggies, salads etc and the only thing that went through my band were sliders.

I had my band out and slowly gained 10kg, so decided to be sleeved. I believe this is the best choice for me as I can still eat, but I can't overeat and portions were always my problem. I'm down 9kg and was sleeved on 11 August. I have 32kg ish to go till goal :)

I honestly can't recommend Dr Talbot enough. Don't go with a surgeon just because he's close. Do your research and choose a surgeon based on how good he or she is. I travelled to be sleeved by Dr T to Kogarah - and I'm in Western Sydney. It was well worth it to be in such safe hands.

Hi KE22AH! Are you seeing him at his Fairfield or penrith rooms? I've just had the one consult with him, which was very straight forward. He said to just book another appointment when I am ready. I just need to sort the $. I think I may go with the super option as well. I'd love to have it done before Christmas though.

Are you going through nepean private? It's very nice to read someone else going through the same thing with the same surgeon!

Hi all,   I was referred to Dr Khaleal as well from Dr Cregan's receptionist last week. She told me Dr Cregan was no longer doing  banding.    My appointment isn't until  late October as Dr Khaleal  receptionist said he was going away for a month. She was very informative & I was surprised at $4000 she quoted for both banding & a sleeve for Dr Khaleal fees & then my PHI will cover my hospital costs & about $500 for anesthesiologist. She also said it was probably only a months wait  after that appointment  to have the surgery done.  I am seeing him at Penrith. I am wanting this done before the end of the year.

Hi Kim! I'm so glad you ladies have replied here!! I was feeling very alone lol.

Do you know what the amount for anaesthetist is Kim? If $500 is what is covered, I'm wondering what the difference will be. When I saw him I was a little overwhelmed and my mind went a little blank when he quoted $4000.

Are you both getting a sleeve or a band? I'm 90% sure I will go with the sleeve.

Hi Zencat,

I had knee surgery  at Nepean Private in January this year and that was about a 2 hour operation and the anesthetist charges were much the same I think $600  and after I claimed Medicare & private fund I was out of pocket about  $190  so I am thinking this is about the same. That surgery I was out of pocket about $2800 after fund & medicare rebates so that's why I was pleased with the $4000 I was expecting more like $7000. I Think I will need to have the sleeve done but I will wait & see what the Dr recommends.

That's not too bad. I've budgeted for $5,000 and from your experience that may well cover me if my excess is $500 for the hospital. I'm just waiting now to pluck up the courage to contact my super. I'll ring dr Khaleal tomorrow to get a supporting letter.

I went to an information might in Kogarah with Dr. Jorgensen. It was a very informative night, although I felt that it was a bit like a very hard sell to the audience. A close friend of mine went through the Sleeve Gastrectomy with Dr Jorgensen and he couldn't be happier with the results of the surgery and the weight loss since. He had the operation this year and was charged $6,000 for surgery and the anaesthetist. I was quoted $7,500 for the same thing in the same year?? I decided to try Dr Khaleal, mainly because the cost is much better $4,000-4,500 I think? I have decided to choose Dr Khaleal because follow-ups are such an important part of the process after the surgery. I want a specialist who is close by for this reason. I was very impressed with the surgery receptionist at Dr Khaleal's rooms in Penrith, and she was extremely positive about Dr Khaleal as a surgeon and person. You would expect this from an employee, although I felt it was very honest and genuine. I will see him soon and make my decision after the first appointment.

Dr Cregan did my band (he's retiring use to ill health) but going to Dr Kaleal (sp?) for future follow up.the one thing not mentioned in the prices is cost of follow up fill/unfill. I have everything bulk billed and it's worth asking whoever you go with if there is a cost over what you get back from m'care. PHI doesn't cover any of this stuff. Good luck with it. Feel free to PM me if you want any info.

Dear Friends,

I returned home on Friday after have a Sleeve Gastrectomy with Dr Fadil Khaleal at Nepean Private Hospital. I cannot express how impressed I am with Dr Khaleal through every step of this process. He is a thorough gentleman, a very professional surgeon and generally a lovely bloke. It is quite evident that he is a Bariatric Surgeon based upon a desire to help others in my opinion. I had many questions for him  at every stage, and he was always extremely willing to give me all the time I needed to answer them to alleviate any of my concerns. One of my fellow patients last week was a nurse who had worked for Dr Khaleal for a number of years. She said to me that she wouldn't consider ANY other guy in Western Sydney. The big names in Bariatric Surgery in Sydney include a team in St George led by Dr Talbot. Dr Khaleal worked with that team for six years before branching out on his own. One important thing for me was the comprehensive approach that Dr Khaleal uses in the actual operation. After the incisions, he staples, sutures, glues and then re-attaches the normal abdominal fat to protect the site and aid recovery. I have experienced NO post-operative stomach pain AT ALL!! I have experienced pain from the CO2 they pump in before the procedure which presents in your left shoulder until it fades away. I have on needed ANY pain relief since being home. I started walking the streets straight away and the CO2 pain subsided quickly after 3 days. If you want a result that is affordable and highly effective, he is your man. I had the usual anxieties that one does, but now I am SO excited about going through this process. I began my pre-op fast on 1 Jan at 115.4kg. I was 107.4kg on surgery day. Today, I am 103.8kg. Don't hesitate! Go for it!!

Incidentally, I was charged $4000 out-of-pocket by Dr Khaleal. The going rate in St George is apparently around $7,500 accordingly to a friend who just had his Sleeve Gastrectomy

I can't echo JayBee's sentiments enough. I had mine done with Dr Khaleal at Holyroyd private (just simply it was cheaper). Dr Khaleal and his team were brilliant. Dr Khaleal especially at no point pushed me or prodded me any direction with any decisions I made through the consultations etc. He just laid all the facts on the table, answered all questions I had in detail and simply supported me through everything. He is a legend. Unlike JayBee though I have experienced post-op pain but from what I have heard this is not uncommon and in fact, feeling no pain is uncommon. I've used panadol and endone as requried and overall I feel great considering the change that has been done inside me! Cannot recommend Dr Khaleal enough.

I'm so glad you all had a great experience with dr Khaleal. I've been busy with all my reading and so on with a facebook group, so I haven't been on this forum for months. Sorry Ke22ah!! I'm booked in for a bypass with circle of care June 10th. If dr Khaleal did bypasses I'd be booked in with him for sure. :)
