3 weeks until my banding. Started Opti-Fast today, feeling a bit overwhelmed though!

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I've just completed my first day of the Opti-Fast diet (with my loving partner who is going to do the 3 weeks of dinners with me, he will eat what he wants while i'm at work though but our dinner will be the same).

I had my 3 shakes today, and snack veggies at lunch, and he made an awesome big stirfry for dinner.

But I'm worried that 3 weeks of the same might become very wearing.

Problem i'm having is that I was never told to see a dietician. I was basically told do opti-fast + 2 serves vegg and tbsp of oil per day.

But I have no idea where that leaves me for hot drinks, can i have some skim milk and natural (stevia) sweetner in it?

I've stolen a few reciepies from this forum and plan on making them.

I guess the biggest struggle for me will be "sweets", not that I want chocolate or anything, but are there any sweet tasting things that wouldn't effect the shrinking of the liver?

and is it okay to have like 1 apple a day or seomthing (something i feel i need to get through my work day at times).

Feeling a bit stressed because I don't want to be miserable at work as it could impact on the work I do , but i also don't want to mess up my progress and not be able to get surgery done.

Just any advice or support would be appreciated!!

Cheers!!

Hi raven, i was on no dairy, no sugar and restricted veg, friut was a no no due to sugar and carbs level. . Balck tea/coffee ok with sweetner, diet cordial and softdrinks ok. Diet jelly good. When i needed a "sugar" fix i would have one sugarless lollie that i had to suck. During this phase i tried to keep busy to avoid stress. First 3 or 4 days are the worst. You need to keep to this diet so that your liver is right for surgery. I ended up with an alergic reaction to opti and in the end had to do the diet without the shakes. Some dietitians do the diet differently so this is my story only. Best of luck.

I was told the same duckie. I think the pamphlet in the optifast box lists the do's & dont's for veges

Into my 3 day on optifast, have a headache & no energy.

Your not allowed any fruit while on the opti but you can have diet jelly, sugar free lollies, diet cordial and diet soft drinks for something sweet

I've gone and bought some sugarless lollies and some of the diet jelly. I don't plan on having a tonne but having a bit every few days would be nice.  I've not cheated at all and am done my second day. Feeling a bit lethargic but my partner has made massive veggie soup tonight and large veggie stirfry last night so that has helped give me something left over to bring for work lunch as well just to heat up.  I've decided to use my stevia sweetners for tea (no carbs or calories so figured should be ok) and just the tiniest drab of milk.  And i've had no fruit.

So only naughty thing i think i'm doing is the tiny bit of skim milk in tea. I figure that shouldn't hold me back too much.

Bring on the surgery though because i'm looking forward to being able to have my morning berries and yogurt again, albeit in small amounts!

Hey Raven, I've hit two weeks of being on the optifast diet, with another 2 to go. My first three days sucked. You just have to focus on getting through them and thinking about the reason you're doing it. Someone posted a recipe for a Jamie Oliver tomato soup on here and that has been my saviour! So delicious, makes heaps and helps a little with the cravings for sweet things - all that tomato! I did the same for the sweet things, sugarfree lollies, light peach iced tea, diet jelly - don't get the orange and mango one tho, after a while it gets sickly sweet and ends up tasting like cordial concentrate! I found strawberry and raspberry to be the best. Try putting a shot of coffee in your morning shake with a bit of artificial sweetener, that seems to really work for me - then you'll be less likely to sneak a drop of milk in your tea or coffee.

All the best with it!

i think it really depends on your doctors orders and if they have said 2 serves of veggies and optifast you should really try to stick to that.

I know my surgeon allows for one piece of fruit a day to try and stop people cheating, its really dependent on your surgeon.

Obviously the least amount of cheating from your surgeons instructions the better off you will be.

Diet jelly? 7 calories in a serve

Didn't you have Diet Jelly nerms?

I'm just checking out my packets here...

Aeroplane Jelly Lite

3 flavours: Raspberry, Port Wine and Mango Passionfruit.

All have the same amount of calories of 7 per serve (based on 125g serving size).

Now they claim there is 4 servings per sachet *cough wtf lol* but I always add extra water 300ml instead of 250ml cool.

Hi Raven

My Nutritionist said a "dash" of skim milk in my coffee was fine. Providing it was skim, no hi-lo or full fat allowed. I used to have hi-lo milk anyway so the jump to skim milk/no fat wasn't too bad.

I could have some soy sauce and lemon juice in my stir fries and I also made a real veggie based spag sauce with mince (of course no pasta) but it was really nice to have. Alot of ppl on pre-op don't realise they can have a palm sized portion of lean protein: meat/chicken/fish/2 eggs each day. But don't take my word for it, if you have been told not too, well of course, don't lol. But those who have come through not knowing about it, have checked with their clinics and been pleasantly surprised and come home and had a feast :)

Uhh, I made some the other night and I ate the whole batch in one go... that's half a kilo of jelly. I won't be doing that again, but at least it's better than having eaten half a cheesecake, lol.

Yes AB, I'm allowed to have a serve of protein each day & as many of the allowed veges as I want.

Was told it helps to keep the hunger at bay so less cheating.

Into my 5th day of optifast & feeling much better though tired.

Went & stocked up on Vitamins etc told help with the tiredness. Not sure what is going to help with the grumpiness

Yes, you will be tired Clydie, it's hard to expect a car to run without petrol!

Admittedly I slept a fair bit during my Optifast stage. I was informed I would feel lousy, grumpy and tired (but back then I was often like that lol) so I would sleep it off. Alot of my day to day behaviours were food orientated too eg. snacks at the computer, coffee and a cookie watching my tv shows....so for me, I had to change the behaviour to stop the food going in. Most days it worked, but for those it didn't, I relied on backups like this forum, family, friends to pull me out of the hole.

Yea i'm finding it a bit difficult since i work as a therapist so my day is either being positive and helping people, or sitting doing paperwork >.<

And to add insult to injury my team is having a goodbye afternoon tea tomorrow (normally involving cake, cheese, crackers etc) for a leaving team member... and i won't be able to have any of it >.<  At least they are aware what is happening and know that i might be cranky.

I think i've done okay and am nearly at a week.

My lovely partner i'd die without him on this. Every day he has cooked for me and eating the same (he is at home currently most days). So we've had veggie stir frys with some olive oil and soy sauce. And several days of just big veggie soups full of cauliflower with some stock base. And for lunches a massive salad with some oil based dressing my doc said i could have. I think the hardest part is lack of protein and meat. But i was told no so i'll just live without it. I've gone vegetarian int he past and lived, but back then I could have vegetarian schnitzels and things like that...

We've got some sugar free stevia sweetened lollies and gum for while i'm paperworking at work.

I havn't had much issue now i find with coffee and tea... i only usually have a coffee every 2-3 days anyway, so i've just stopped having it, or if i do have it i get the vanilla mocchona which has that vanilla essence flavor without sugar. and just have some sweetner in it with no milk or just the tiniest drab of milk.  And for tea i'm finding if i have Chai or Orange Peoke tea with just sweetner and no milk its good.

So I think i'm doing good. Only 18 days left anyway and then at least i can have fruit blended and things again. I think one of the hardest part is no fruit.

And only 10 work days left i'll just have to push though with being nice to people in appointments then raging afterwards lol!!

So glad my work is giving me the 4 weeks after my surgery off :D

On a side note, i have to go in for pre-op bloods tomorrow an get an ultrasound just to check on my gallbladder. I used to have gallbladder and gallstone attacks like 4-5 years ago when my old G.P put me on that Reductil medication to lose weight (that is now banned in australia go figure! lol). Worst pain in my life!! and the G.P wouldnt belive me so i left his service, stopped the meds, and voila my gallpain gone. But even though it was long ago my surgeon just wants to make sure there is no scarring or inflamation he needs to be aware of for my surgery.

Raven you can not be too careful. I had a psychological appt, sleep study, bloods, heart tests and dental check. Was a but peed at the time (time off work and the out if pocket expense), but it was worth it for both me and my surgeon. Found out i had undiagnosed sleep apnoea, which affected how they did the anesthetic for the op. Best of luck, this is the best, i am getting my life back, gram by gram

It is great that you have such support at work. Maybe the surgeon can fix the stones and do your op at the same time?

Dunno he said they don't normally do that, but the stones arn't bothering me currently so maybe I can go back later and get them dealt with. I'd just definitly like to have my lap band in asap.. especially as i've already done 1 of my 3 weeks on optifast lol

Into my 3 day on optifast, have a headache & no energy.

This is what is concerning me leading up to my November band removal. I work in a full on job and having a headache and no energy will severely impact me.
