Did anyone ever cheat on the preop diet ?

Recommended Posts

Did anyone ever cheat on the preop diet? I have fallen off the wagon a little bit here and there and am feeling extremely disappointed in myself! Just wanting to hear from anyone else who struggled or is struggling, if it effected your surgery or not etc.

TIA

You have to look at it as 2 weeks out of the rest of your life.  If you can get past the first week it does get easier.  You are only human after all and used to snacking when you felt like it and before you know it the choc/chip/wine or whatever disappeared.  Tomorrow's another day.  Just tell yourself it's good training for after the surgery :)

I started my pre op diet 4 days ago and apart from the first day as I started in the evening I have not cheated at all. Not even to test the tenderness of my partners steak in the stir fry. Meat is what I’m craving the most. I thought I’d miss soft drink, ( I used to drink a 500ml energy drink a day) but I’m coping without that. I’m just having water for fluids, strawberry’s for day snacks and a cup of veges for tea, plus the three optifast a day. I do feel hungry all the time and kind of an empty feeling and always seem to have a yucky taste in my mouth. I have said all along that the two weeks pro op will be my biggest challenge.

Sure did!  If I could have stuck to the pre-op diet for two weeks, I would have been able to stick to a better diet full stop!  Fortunately, it did not affect my surgery.  My liver was in great shape, so I got lucky.

I can only say to those that fall off the pre-op wagon, don't fret too hard.  Get back on as quickly as possible and try your absolute, and honest, best to stick to it.  Speak with your medical/nutritional team and get their feedback.

I still worked as a baker with some 3am starts and my first early shift (about 5days in) I almost passed out 2hrs into my shift, so from then on every early shift I had I ate 2 pieces of toast and Vegemite before work and had no dizziness so I stuck with it. I did stick to everything else quite religiously.

6 pieces of toast over 2weeks is better that falling down.

I started the pre-op diet week ago and yes I cheated ,maybe twice now (snacks like small handful of potato chips) but I'm not putting too much pressure on myself. I just refocus either next meal/day to try little bit hard. We are only human at the end of the day.

Yes I did occasionally cheat.  In the first week we had my son’s birthday dinner at a restaurant and I had dumplings and a glass of wine.  In the second week I couldn’t resist a cheese platter at drinks with friends.  I felt guilty about it initially but decided to give myself a break because I’m only human and it was really good cheese.

Oh, and I also had a milk based coffee every day because I can’t function without it.

I saw my doctor a couple of days before surgery and confessed.  He just laughed and said don’t worry about it because I’d still managed to lose 3.5kgs in 2 weeks which is a pretty decent result.

All you can do is try your best and don’t beat yourself up over the occasional slip.

This is why I'm deliberately starting my PHI later so that next year when i go for surgery or even preop diet it will be a good 4 weeks after all 3 birthdays in July and early Aug... My best mates my brothers and then mine all in a 3 weeks gap then i can rest a few weeks before i begin the fasting stage and to give my body a break from the alcohol before i diet but i may have to ask the docs about alcohol within a month before surgery and diet....

Sort of. I'm meant to have 4 shakes a day plus vegies/salads but I generally just have 3 and add a hard boiled egg occasionally. I'm eating a lot of vegie stirfry and vegie soups.  Last time I did Optifast I substituted a small can of tuna bfor the 3rd shake occasionally, just to have something to chew.

Haha good thinking and I probably should have planned around events like you’re doing but I was too impatient :D
