Hi everyone. A few days ago I got the courage to go to my doctor and ask for a referral. I'd been hesitant about this. For some reason I thought he'd get all judges on me and either try to talk me out of it, or just flat refuse to give it to me. Turns out that he thought it was a great idea, gave me the referral and wished me luck. My appointment isn't until 20 February. My 12 months with my health insurer comes up in mid March, so I pushed the appointment out until closer to that date. I feel really excited about the prospect, but I have a question regarding the excess skin. Is there anything at all that can be done to reduce the occurrence of excess skin? I'm thinking that getting a fitness routine in please, and ensuring I ritually moisturise to keep my skin hydrated. Do anyone have any tips?
Thanks in advance
Ally

Start early with the exercise and keep it going. Drink lots of water and don't worry. Some people wil have skin that bounces back some wont - I'm somewhere in the middle. Keeping your skin in great condition can only be a benefit!
My goal is almost the same as yours. Nearly 30 kilos in and I'm pleasantly surprised.
I've also invested in some shapewear, something I've avoided for almost 20 years. I'm pleased with how comfortable it is now and it does help smooth out the lumps and bumps!
Good luck!!

Hi sindahella, I'm seeing the surgeon on the 7th Feb. I'm quite excited/nervous about it. I also didn't know what my GP would think when I asked for the referral. Like yours, he was very encouraging. I would like to get some good habits in place, but I'm finding my thinking running along the "I'd better enjoy this now, because it's all about to change" track. Like a last supper mentality I suppose. Good luck with your preparations!

I agree to help the skin bounce back lots of water and exercise. I am not worrying about it too much, still wanting to get rid of the excess fat before I start worrying about the skin it was in.

Hi Ally,
congrats on making the decision and getting a referral for lap band. I was banded 25 Feb 2011 with highest weight 146.6kg. today I am 104.9kg and have a little bit of excess skin under my arms (flaps!) and my tummy apron. I still have 30kg to go before I hit my ideal goal of 75kg so I am sure my stomach excess skin will be more visible closer to that weight.
Exercise is key in this journey, admittedly though I have struggled with exercise EVERY day (general rule is minimum 30 mins each day) so I would recommend incorporating not only cardio/fat burning exercise for fat loss but also strength training with weights/pump class/kettlebells. Muscle mass will help to tone when you lose body fat.
Good luck to you in your journey, looking forward to hearing of your success

Hey there
my specialists appt wa supposed to be today 25th Jan but pushed it back to the 15th of Feb. My step sister has had the band done and lost 50kg and has very little tummy skin but big arm flaps so im guessing it different for everyone. I too am worried about the skin. Im starting otu at 175 kg and am hoping to (over the next few years )loose 100kg. im sure there will be a mega amount of exess skin but liek the other flks have suggested, stay well hydrated, moisturise, and jsut enjoy the losses u will have.

Well I'm with you. I have an appointment today at 4pm and am a little scared. I want to loose enough weight to be in a healthy BMI, maybe around 30kgs and the skin is something I really can't think about at this stage. We really need to go one step at a time or our heads will be finding it too hard to deal with.
I think the mental state is part of the journey and thinking healthy is something I'm trying to stay focused about. (Would love to be in a size 14 as well).
So the jounrey begins for me this afternoon. I have been reading all this information for hours today getting feedback from their journeys.
Thank you
