It has been hot in Perth lately and i have felt the need for a large salt fix. Nothing I eat seems to satisfy and I do not want to eat more calories that I should. I have already eaten more packets of WW chips and some peanuts that I shouldn't have.

Could this be associated with having my gallbladder out?

If not what suggestions for sating the salt fix.

Many thanks

Lyn

OOOOOHHH I can relate to this so much!! I used to have a HUGE sweet tooth, now it is more savoury. The amount of nuts I have consumed since being banded is just crazy. And not the healthy kind either, the flavoured, egg coated ones. I find myself also craving salty sensations.

I dont really have any suggestions, other than perhaps some Miso soup, or a nice big drink of Bonox (GAG!). Rice crackers might be a better alternative to the peanuts too, I sometimes substitute for those :)

This might sound weird, but I eat kangaroo or an egg scrambled with vegeta stock. Salt and protein go hand in hand with me.

For sugar cravings I eat Jols, or I make a Jarrah Hot Choc 99% fat free. Only 50 cals (or something like that) a cup.

I do vegemite on crackers!! The savory hits the spot when my salt cravings are up, plus it's relatively harmless calorie-wise (as long as you don't lather up the butter too!!)
I'm also a huge fan of the scrambled egg. I know in the mornings when I'm craving McDonalds breakfast it's usually coz my body is craving salt. Vegemite works every time.

Well well well, I learn something new every day..........

By far, the most common reason for salt cravings is stress. When we get stressed out, our adrenal gland works all the time. The adrenal gland produces a hormone, called aldosterone, which moderates human sodium levels. If there is not enough aldosterone, the body dumps the sodium into the bloodstream where it is carried out of the body. Then the body has insufficient salt and craves more. The thing to do when this happens is not to eat more salt, but to reduce your stress so that your adrenal gland is not overloaded.

If you feel you absolutely are not going to make it through the day without more salt, substitute sea salt. Sea salt is much better for you and even has the minerals that were processed out of the table salt. The chances are that if you are craving sodium because your levels are low, you are also going to feel very exhausted at the same time. Often this situation results in low blood pressure and fatigue.

The solution is to try to eat a lot of high protein foods that are low in fat. These will strengthen your adrenal gland. Certain vitamins and minerals also help the body to retain salt, and these are vitamins B-1, B-5, E and C, along with manganese.
