Hello fellow bandits,

I am set to have surgery at the end of April in Sydney with Dr Florica. I first had my appointment last may before I realized my Private health insurance didnt kick in untill April '12.

I recently had my final appointment with the Dr and he informed me of a new process that he does. He now does whats called a Banded Gastric Plication. It basically involves folding the stomach in half inwards to the left and stitching it. It basically eliminates the ability for the stomach to expand and helps prevent stomach errosion and slippages.

The supposed result of that combined with the lapband is a small pouch at the top of the stomach and a narrow, sleeve-shaped lower stomach that cannod expand. So basically you experience the same fast result of weight loss that those with sleeves/ bypass have, but with the steadiness of the band. Also without the complications of the Bypass/ sleeve and its completely reversible.

I found a website with a clinic in the USA that does it and they say benifits include:
  • significant short term and long term weight loss

  • fewer adujstments post surgery neededre

  • minimally invasive procedure

  • no stapling or removing of the stomachy

Basically im asking if anyone has had this/ heard of it? I trust my doctor completely and just wanted to know fellow bandits response!

All the best on your journey!

xxx

Jade! I was about to inbox you asking if you had it. I trust him completely. I think it looks like a great surgery, its like double in one go.

Just was interested on if others had it/ their experiences.

And dont credit it all to him, im sure you are doing alot of the work too! As he said, best to work in a team!

yip iv heard of it and its doing very well- i would of gone for it if they did it over here.
its like having the sleeve without getting your stomach chopped and can be reversed if ness.
i think this will take off esp with people who dont want stomach cutting type op's :)

whoops i see im repeating what you said  im still a bit drugged after my re-op !!
i believe you can have the op without the band too is that right??.

if my band is leaking and not my port-which was replaced yesterday i would go for this op- even if i have to fly to oz to get it.

Not to worry Rosmary, hope the re-op went well!

My doc said it was a new thing that had been done alot in the US/ mexico. It is true that you can get it without the band, but my doctor said the band is good to have steady weight loss too, It seems like it is 2 WLS in one so i feel i am very lucky to be one of the first bandits getting it!!

I will update my results after surgery in April!

Did some reading - it looks like an interesting option. I'm still not sure where my leak is (but definatly something wrong as I have no restriction at all now despite the fact that i should have 9mls in a 8ml band!). If I have to have the band replaced then I might ask about alternatives - it's difficult to trust the band as it has never worked for me.

Love to know how it goes for you dreamsof...The positive for me is that I'm not in any pain or discomfort - I'm seeing the surgeon next week and may talk about the options open to me then.

Can I please ask a question in relation to costings? How much did they charge for the banded plication and did your private health cover contribute any considering it is not a common surgery?
I'm only asking as I am looking into revisional surgeries and this looks fantastic!

Thanks and take care
Sonia :-)

Hi o2b.. Im having it done tomorrow and as far as i know i am using the same claim number as lap banding its just something extra the surgeron does in the procedure, I found it very hard to find information for Australian surgeons so not too sure how many actually do it!

Good luck and i shall let you know how i go!

Hello'

Feeling ok. Only major issue has been the gas pain and the side effects. It hasn't hit me as bad on my shoulder but I keep getting wind pains where you would usually. My tummy areas is a little tender but that's not too bad at all. I've been told swelling can increase up to 48 hours post op so that leaves me about 18 hours to go before the healing process begins I guess.

Lots of rest and walking around the house to try get the gas out.
